Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms

Venturon, I didn't fully understand that post, does that mean that if we only have M2TW we will get screwed over for any future bugfixes?
I've been considering pre-ordering Kingdoms but if it contains the same bugs(as the noe discussed above for example) I'm not sure if I want to.

You will get 'screwed over' for bug-fixes whether you buy the expansion or not, but only temporarily. The patch everyone is waiting for is 1.4, which will apply to both versions of the game. They simply did not have enough time to test such a major patch over two platforms and still meet the expansion's deadline.

Ah thanks, good to know. I hope the patch comes out before the end of this year.

Woop :D

Got MTW2 to work on Steam!

Just to wait for Kingdoms :D

:sigh: Can't you see I'm busy doing nothing? :p Besides, I won't be getting it until my birthday (10/31) anyway, and I'm seriously debating whether I should get BioShock over this. I'm getting both, but I'm wondering which will be for my birthday and which will be Easter, as the Orange Box is already firmly ensconced as my Christmas present.

No price yet. And it only works with Steam versions of MII.

That's not right, there wasn't a problem with a retail version of Civ 4 and the steam version of BTS.

Looks like I'm keeping my preorder

NOTE:
Because the Kingdoms expansion will use core game elements from the Medieval II: Total War game, it is required that you use the same method for purchasing Kingdoms as you did in purchasing Medieval II: Total War. If you purchased Medieval II: Total War from Steam, then please use Steam to purchase Kingdoms.

From the Steam page for Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms.

Anyone played it yet? I will probably devote the coming weekend to re-capturing Jerusalem from the infidels. Really looking forward to the Crusades campaign. Although I heard some good stories about the Americas campaign too.

BIRTHDAY: The Orange Box

1ST REPORT CARD: Kingdoms

CHRISTMAS: Bioshock or Opposing Fronts, I'm unsure.

These are going to a swell couple of months. :smoking:

Get a job... you'll get the games faster :E

I just played the demo for Medieval 2 about 2 days ago... holy crap, the battles look fantastic with the graphic settings turned up.
And it's surprisingly easy to control.

I think I just might buy it, either that or I'll pick up Rome first as I greatly prefer that era more.

Unless Medieval 2 is better feature wise?

MTW2 is basically RTW 1.5, gameplay and graphics wise. If you can get Rome for a low price, get that first if you like the era that much. If you enjoy it, you'll probably love MTW2.

I preferred Rome TBH. I played MTW2 for a few days, and all it made me do was want to play Rome.

Alright, sounds good.
I saw it at Best Buy the other day... comes with both expansions, and it's only $20.

I'll probably pick it up at the end of the week.

Kingdoms is installed. I am gonna go for Crusades first and either play as the Turks or the Byzantines.

EDIT Grr, can't make my mind up. Teutonic knights look cool too ....

Is it working fine? I heard there was some confusion in that the Steam version of Kingdoms is only compatible with the RETAIL version of Medieval II.

Did you purchase both the original M2TW and Kingdoms off of Steam, Shakermaker, and is it playing alright.

According to STEAMS site, Steam Kingdoms is only compatible with Steam M2TW.

I bought it offline since I have MTW2 on DVD. Besides, I like cases. And it runs great. All settings on high very smoothly.

I first had a go at the Teutonic campaign but that was quite hard. I took on the Lithuanians with a bit too much zeal, so in about 10 turns I had run up a huge debt. Also the world map in this campaign is relatively small so I quit that for now.

Then I switched to the Americas and that's a lot more fun. I am playing as the Spaniards. My loyal servant Hernan Cortez has ravaged his way from Santa Cruz towards the Yucatan peninsula. I didn't attack any factions yet, just rebels, and that seems to be working fine. Just opened up a second front in Yucatan (just below present day Cancun), so the Mayas might get a bit anxious.

I like the fog of war in this campaign. It makes you go out and explore more, or at least negotiate with other factions for map information. And I need info, since some European factions seem to have discovered America too.

By the way, made a little vid: linky (on the top of the list) or linky. Just a small hillside clash with sloppy strategy.

Yup, besides the Spaniards you can play as the Aztecs, the Mayans, and the Apaches.

Since I have recently become really fasinated by native american culture and history, during the early conquests and earlier this means the xp pack is sold to me as soon as I can afford it, should be next monday.

Is there any issues with using M2TW mods if you install Kingdoms?

A surprising chain of events has led me to come into possession of Kingdoms.

It...words cannot describe it. It rocks that hard. I can say with an absolutely straight face this is ten times better than vanilla Medieval 2.

It's just, I don't know, the atmosphere I guess. M2TW I thought disappointingly lacked much atmosphere, especially in comparison to the original Medieval, who I thought created an amazing sense of place with the paper map of Europe and the naturalistic sounds in the background. Medieval 2 largely lacked this.

This though...dude, it's the music. That's what does much of it. It's so sexy. I have played six blood-soaked turns as the Teutonic Order, and already have a dozen tales of incredible heroism and cunning, but I will not bore you with the details. Suffice to say watching your warrior priests cleaving through the heathen horde, their warhammers reaping a ghastly harvest, and then for a platoon of Christ knights comes barreling out of a snowstorm with a shriek of 'REPENT!' open their lips to deliver the hammer blow to the Lithuanians' rear, it, it just brings a tear to my eye as music swells.

Yet listening to the cold, austere music playing in the background, and just looking at the terrifying face of the Teutonic Knight, I'm transported.

I loaded up the Americas campaign, and staring at that crazy Aztec or Mayan or whatever-he-is motherf***er staring back at me scared the shit out of me, and listening to the throaty native chants in the background heightned the effect. I don't know where I'm going with this, it's just that it kicks so much ass.

Gameplay, yeah, I think the simple gameplay mechanic's improved, but the sense of immersion has been so enriched that it feels a dozen times better. This made me think of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which like Kingdoms, had a solid but not spectacular core, but with a masterful execution of atmosphere and immersion. I'm not talking about graphics, don't think that for a second, what makes this game great is far more than that.

Kingdoms: 9.2/10

I really wanna buy Kingdoms but I barely have enough time playing through my other game as it is(F*cking new highschool is literally drowning me in homework!)

Over-exaggeratingly epic. :p
I've never been -that- immersed in an RTS before.

Oh damn, Shakermaker! I wish I had cool loot like that.

In other news, I love the Americas campaign. You get horrific (and, technically, historically accurate) kill ratios with the Spaniards. I just watched four units of Conquistadores and Hernan Cortes, the main man himself, flay an army of Mexican rebels five times their size alive. Jumped the bastards at night in a rainstorm, so their archers were worse than useless. Cavalry charges to catch exposed units in the rear and flanks, feints to draw out a powerful unit then clusterf*ck it from all angles with cavalry charges, then pulling out before the rest of the army catches up. Hit and run at it's best baby...

ETA: Not to mention that Hernan Cortes is one of the most badass characters in the game. I just need to get him to triple gold veterancy, and he will literally be the apex in ass-kicking. Insane command, loyalty, nice piety, and while he has 0 dread at the start, you HAVE to exterminate the cities to keep them from rebelling. Meaning at Turn 20 he's nearly got a full rack of skulls on his stat sheet.

i really enjoyed Rome: Total War so i think i'll check this and the original Medieval II out :)

Does it still suffer from the problems I hate?

This

There is one thing I always hated about this latest one, even though for some reason I still like it(despite not playing it even though I want to). I hate the fact that units scatter so much during combat... I have like 6 groups attacking some units and the distance between them gets further and further... It's better if they fight elbow to elbow in the bloodbath, at least if there is room to do so! But instead they seem to fan out in some sort of strange spaced out grid pattern.

Also question. Does Kingdoms patch MII:TW or do you have to install the patch for it before installing kingdoms?

Kingdom patches the game twice if you haven't got the 1.2 patch.

On that problem, that is something I haven't noticed. Will watch for it though.
