Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay

really really impressed by this gameplay footage
...could be THE game that gets me into the PS3
this and final fantasy of course :p

Gameplay vid looks sick as hell. I`ve never played a MGS game in my life so I dunno what it`s all about but this looks pretty playable for me. Nothing amazing though.

That's your problem right there, can't judge a book by it's cover. There's really very few games (if any) that offer a similiar experience as playing an MGS game, and you should definitely pick them up (preferably starting from MGS1 on the PS1).

Oh and that last comment, is blasphemy.

What's mind-boggling is they still have a lot of time on their hands to tweak / improve the game yet it already looks highly polished. Wouldn't be surprised if things like graphics turn out even better by the time they've released it.

Wow, I had no idea they'd expand so much on each aspect of gameplay. I already was excited for this, but Jesus Christ it looks kickass.

I'll be getting a PS3 next year for sure.

I was already planning to buy a PS3, but this is the icing on the cake, amazing game play video for sure.

This gameplay video looked great but I'm a bit worried it may all be too heavily based on scripts. Two things in this video were rather dumb:

-does Snake carry a drum can in his pocket? I know he had a lot of equipment on him, including an RPG, but c'mon a drum can is a little over the top o__O

-when Snake was near that van totalled by the air attacks he started getting shot from behind, turned around and returned fire; the enemy got hit, staggered... and threw itself over the barrier and off the roof (at least that's what it looked like); I know it was probably supposed to be a cool-looking scripted death animation, but it looked stupid as hell and reminded me of soldier from MoH, getting shot in the face and falling forwards

Apart from that - win! And I thought hl2.net generally hated PS3? :p

I'm actually excited about MGS4 for the first time after seeing that. Like many people, I wasn't expecting much more than MGS2/3 with fancy gfx.

It looks to be the new box and makes more sense in a battlefield like that. Besides, get over it, it's Metal Gear. Snake has been hiding in crappy little cardboard boxes for years. Think of it as an upgrade. :cheese:

sorry guys but I have to write this in caps.

MGS4 PLAYABLE DEMO WILL HIT ON PS STORE IN JAPAN.

So if you have a seperate japanese account, you may able to download it somewhere in early August. I don't know about PSN so I don't know if it will let you create a separate account from another country like in XBL.

WHERE DID YOU HEAR AUGUST!?

edit: Or do you really mean the beta for MG:O?

I played through MGS1 and the couldn't get through the last two. Just not my style. IMO, MGS 2 and 3 were the same as MGS 1 with better gfx. Even after seeing this, I'm still not expecting much more from MGS4. Someone tell me what happens when you complete it.

That said, this game does look pretty spectacular. Should sell more than a few consoles.

Snake and his magic pockets.

Snake and his magic pockets.
Not unlike some of the old and great adventure games for the PC. The Monkey Island series, for instance, always had some really large stuff going into the pants of the main character, Guybrush. They even made fun of it which was great great great.

And I love the idea of the oil drum being the cardboard box v2.0 because it does actually add to the gameplay. The whole puking/magazine thing is hilarious as well. :D

Those crazns and their humor.

Haha, yeah. Kojima seem to be obsessed by seeing his characters vomit on screen. :E

The magazine "weapon" was so fun to use in MGS3 MP. You could hide a magazine in a fairly populated area, i.e. your base, and wait until one from the enemy team walks over it.
I hope it has the same effect in MGS4 and hopefully they'll include it in MGS Online.

EDIT: The gameplay video is available in the JPN Playstation Store btw.

Well, looks like this is gonna be another reason for me to get PS3.
I`m a bit put off by the whole japanese/chinese theme. You know, half man-half woman macho heroes and all that. I guess all MGS games have been like that.

Yeh, there's no escaping the anime side of things. I don't mind it tbh - makes a nice change from the Splinter Cells of this world and the gameplay looks excellent.

Pretty fantastic gameplay video. Still not enough for me to buy a PS3 though.

I didn't think so, but in any case, a bad thing how?

Scripts don't encourage replay as each encounter will be similar. I'm hoping to have the choice to go in guns blazing, stealth it up, or a combo, while taking bad guys out in different orders and trying to come up with cool runs through the levels.

The HD gameplay video is now in the japanese Playstation Network, hopefully they will put it tomorrow in the North American Network, along with the Heavenly Sword demo, yikes!! :D

Replay isn't always measured in what you can and can't do differently each time you play. If something is very fun people will want to play that same thing again. More routes, more ways to play aren't always a solution to replay value. MGS has, whilst being somewhat flexible, always applied specific kinds of scenarios to its gameplay, and I don't expect 4 to be any different.

Sure, but I think you'll find it's variety that usually brings people back.

I think you'll find it's more half an half. I'm more interested in the amount of fun I have the first time round than what I can do the second. If I have alot of fun that time round, I'll go back and do the same thing again.

Yeah, I wonder how dynamic the AI is actually. Do the soldiers have specific targets and objectives in mind and then the find the best way to complete these objectives given the environment and enemy encounters? Does that one patrol always go down that alley in the beginning of the trailer? Does the only variation in AI come when they see/hear you and then react? If you stay completely out of the battle entirely and let the two sides duke it out, will one side totally win? If so, what happens to your objective? What the heck are your objectives in here anyway (besides kill Liquid :O)?

This should still be a whole ton of fun no matter what the answers to those questions.

For the answers to all these questions and more, don't miss the MGS4 experience in early 2008! or the demo this year...

I gotta figure out how I'm gonna play this game before the internet spoils everything for me...

I wouldn't worry too much this isn't harry potter after all.

Coming from someone who already has a PS3 and therefore access to the Japanese PSN Store where you can get this 15 min. demonstration in absolutely stunning HD, I can definitely say that this is easily the best footage of a PS3 game out there. Killzone 2 looked great, but this looks genuinely innovative, immersive, and unbelievably gorgeous.

(Side note: I wish all the PSN Stores would have the same content so I didn't have to sign up for a US account, a UK account, and a Japan account. Still, its a small price to pay for content on which you otherwise may miss out.)

Snake is 100% bad-ass... don't know where you got the half-women thing about him. Now if you're talking about Raiden, then yeah, you might have a point there. Although with his evolution in 4, it seems they fixed him up as well.

Oh and Snake is based off of Snake Pliskin (Escape from L.A. / N.Y.) ... it's ****ing Kurt Russell!
