Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay

I can see what some of the achievements would be if it ever made its way to the 360.

Men's Man (50G) - Perform 25 crotch grabs on each enemy soldiers and statues.

Mr. Barrel (10G) - Hide under 50 barrels that you conjured out of thin air.

Homeless (10G) - Hide inside 20 garbage dumpsters.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! (25G) - Shoot down 100 of those stupid seagull robot things.

Untouchable (100G) - Stand completely exposed in the direct path of gunfire for 15 seconds until you locate and destroy two guys on a roof with the RPG.

You Can't See Me! (50G) - Completely disappear in front of 75 enemies by changing the color of your OctaCamo. Don't worry, they won't notice a man standing right in front of them as long as he is the same color as the floor.

TBH, and this is coming from a guy who's nickname is gray Fox.
It really didn't look that good, it was nice. But Portal, TF2, Darkness, mario Galaxy, Star Craft 2, Bioshock, fable 2, Spore all look like they have better gameplay. And the octocamo kind of looked stupid, plus it lacked radar.

Is there ragdolls in MGS4???

When Snake kills the two soldiers at 11:40 to 11:46 at the top of the building it looked like they ragdolled, after being tossed out, in the air. This also seen at 14:20 when Snake fires a RPG at the two soldiers at the building as they fall to the ground.

Man, what is with you guys and the need for radar in your MGS games?? I have no problem with the lack of it as its a crazy battlefield where soldiers are everywhere and some are friends and some are enemies all at different times. I am frankly pretty darn excited about the gameplay opportunities that helping one side over the other offers. The whole 'hiding in plain sight' thing is a great idea to me. Its a new spin on an old concept. Should be good times...

But I do agree that the gameplay for those other titles that Gray Fox mentioned looks really really good...just not necessarily better than this. They're totally different genres too, so comparing the gameplay of all of these against the other is difficult at best.

I am only excited about the helping one side over the other deal if it actually affect the game in some major way, such as changing the actual story to a big part.

I love MGS, have all the PAL games(Including an old NES copy of MG1, not MG2 though :() but I still think OctaCamo is one of the most retarded things ever to be introduced.. Even more retarded than the camoflauge system in MGS3 where you could lay extremely close to a guy but aslong as you had the correct camo he'd be suffering from an extreme case of impaired vision.

Wow, so do you feel this strongly about hiding in the shadows in the Thief games? From the sound of things you would HATE how blind guards get when you are right in front of them but just in the shadows enough. Same goes for hiding in the shadows in Manhunt.

I haven't played Manhunt so no idea about that, but I still consider hiding in the shadows more realistic than laying on the floor 1 meter infront of a guard and him not seeing you because of the 'suit' you're wearing.

But to each man his own eh.

I do have a serious problem with the lack of radar. It's one of the things that ruined MGS3 for many, there were many other things but that stands out.

For one lack of radar basically means that actually sneaking past enemies is a bad idea, because you cannot see where they are going or coming from. In mgs 3 for example before I went on to search for anything I eliminated every enemy first. Simply because of the lack of radar I could not know that if went in to a room and back out an enemy would be standing there and that would trigger the alarm. Timing your sneaking was also harder because you did not know if an enemy would be standing behind a particular wall, so it was always saver to eliminate the enemy in the room, so you could take your time to recon the area ahead.

Having a radar also results in much cooler and smarter levels. Just compare any level from mgs3 to a level in mgs VR mission. I mean because of the radar they were able to make so many crazy levels, that really required good timing and smarts to get trough, levels which encouraged sneaking by. You cannot make any level like the ones in MGS VR mission in MGS3, simply because of the lack of radar.

I believe the only reason there is not radar anymore is because lack of radar slows the tempo down significantly, which in turn means longer play from equally sized environments.

For me it was the camera not being able to see 5ft infront of you that made not having a radar lame. I think being able to rotate the camera to point anywhere will be less frustrating.

I agree. I never felt like exploring, or sneaking around the map searching for items without the radar. It just made it annoying and frustrating. So I just popped everyone off sneakily.

Yeah I agree I didn't find it physically possible to explore and find weapons and supplies with out using sonar to kill everyone first. Good game but the worst of the 3 IMO.

Note: Didn't Subsistence fix the camera though?

Yup, Subsistence had an alternate camera mode, which afaik will be implemented into MGS4 as well?

Hey, how about guards not being able to see you, if you're in the shadows with 3 bright green lights on your forehead?

The goggles do not actually glow, they are just indicators for the player. Just like in MP, you can see them glow and shit, but your enemies can`t.

I am the only one that note that when snake uses the octocam he is NOT in the front of the enemy?

Octocam looks amazing, what the hell is everyone on about :|. And no radar makes it way more exciting. You have to actually look out for the enemies and plan accordingly instead of "Oh well, my handy dandy omniscient radar can take care of everything, it's cool."

Whilst the radar was obviously handy for navigation, I felt it crippled the gameplay somewhat. Knowing how far an enemy could see in the older games, their location and their direction of movement just made things all too easy, although it was relied upon due to the dodgy camera angles imposed in some areas i.e. the lower decks in MGS2, particularly the steam engine room.

The steel barrel made me laugh big time, I still hope they chuck in a cardboard box scene somewhere for nostalgia sake.

The camera rotation sort of gets rid of the need for radar to an extent anyway and I don't mind.

And the radar turned those VR missions essentially into a game of Pac-Man. Still way fun though. :cheese:

mel gibson> all

So it's settled.

Mel Gibson > JC Denton > Yoshi > Snake

Whar's this guy go?

For some reason that image looks like Vamp with a new haircut and just leaving some weird bisexual masquerade furry party.

Well, yeah, I figured the enemies can't see me. :>

I wouldn`t like a radar, makes games too easy. Use your eyes and all the other cool things you have.

As long as the camera can see to the end of the hallway then I'll be fine :p

The radar doesn't make things too easy, thats ridiculous. The MGS VR and Substance VR sneak levels were the hardest of any mgs game to date. Sure it would make a game not designed for radar easier, a game like mgs3, but if mgs4 had it, the levels and enemies could be designed around it.
The Radar and top down camera are an integral part of MGS, they are in very large part what made it fun, right now mgs is becoming nothing more then a Splinter Cell clone.

even if mgs3 didnt have radar the game still have that metal gear feeling to me,after all you sneak trough your enemyes, and even if it looks like it copying stuff from splinter cell I dont think is copying the whole thing, since both are diferents even if the core gameplay is the same

I dunno what you guys are saying about the radar. I got through the game fine without it. All it took was some cunning. Plus, you could've used the sonar and the motion detector if you really needed a radar-type device.

Seems like everyone went through mgs3 the easy way. I had a lot more fun getting the foxhound rating. which means I beat the game without ever getting spotted or killing anyone on extreme difficulty.

The only reason I did that though is because, I'm too poor to buy games so I play the same game over and over. After getting foxhound rating, I can't even use the sonar or motion detector, because it feels too easy. So i'm perfectly fine with no radar.

I also get used to no radar, but anyway:burp:
