Proud American here but could one make the metaphorical stretch between the Combine and current US military/foreign policy?

1. Technical superiority
2. the US has always been called a "melting pot" of many races beliefs etc... a "combine" if you will of many different things.
3. US often has good intentions of spreading certain, technical, political and socio-economic processes under the approach that they are helping improve "backwards" nations. One might think from the words of Breen that he truly believes the Combine to be a benefit to humanity.

...just bored at work and thought I'd throw it up for discussion :)

I think it's more based on World War 2 Nazi-ism. But the Combine are an equal rights facist group - they hate all people equally.

I think it is a rather large stretch to make it analogous to the US government. It'd be much easier to make the comparison to a government like the old USSR. Or, like the other poster said, a Naziesque/facist government.

I would say the metrocops are the police force of any country today...

No, not metaphorically, they are the police force of any country today.
As for the rest of the combine, yeah, nazi occupation comes quickly to mind, same geological spot too, just without the racism. And the bad moustasches, sausages and cool uniforms.

it seems more american style then soviet style, only with less money and luxury....

I am not that sure that the US has clearly superior technology to some western european countries, superior economy? Yes, superior technology? Maybe.

There is a lot of similar things between the combine and the US, only the combine takes the bad stuff and makes em worse and the good stuff and makes it not so good.
