Figured I'd toss up a new thread here, and maybe if a mod could sticky it.

Donations for the minecraft server are now going up. Based on the response in the donation thread where I was trying to get an idea for how many people could and wanted to donate, we should have enough.

So what I'll do is give instructions on how to donate and in a few days provided enough donations come in during that time I'll purchase the server and we'll get the server transferred over.


How to donate:

Using your paypal account, send a personal gift to my paypal account [email protected]

In the details please post a description of the gift something along the lines that the money is to support the www.halflife2.net minecraft server, so hopefully if paypal decides to have a fuss they can see the exact reason people are giving the money.

You are not obligated to donate obviously, and I ask that you only donate what you can afford, and what you want. I am going to be donating $5 a month, and many others seem to have picked that value as well, but you can donate more if you'd like, or less. Every bit counts!

You have several options when you go to transfer the money. I have a debit card, bank account and paypal credit line all attached to my account, so I can pay with those if I chose to, or just use my paypal account balance. But you have to actually attack them to your account, so they can verify that the bank account/debit card you're using is actually yours.

You didn't have to manually transfer money and wait on it.

If you send money with Paypal and your balance is 0 (or not enough to cover the transfer), it will instantly transfer money from whatever bank account you have linked to it. It will indicate this in the final steps of the process.

This is why putting money into your Paypal is usually pointless.

I'll let the donations filter in for a couple of days and then at some point there we'll have hokey shut down the server... back up the world files and send them off to be and other people(if they want to back it up as well for themselves). After that we'll purchase the server, get it set up and start playing again and let Hokey have some well deserved rest.

And if things end up not going well with the host, we can find another alternative but I have a good feeling about this mynecraft hosting.

Just sent through $13NZ, which should come out to about $10US. Could you let me know how much you actually receive? The initial conversion told me $10.10, but then it was something like $10.85 when I actually put the payment through.

Which is doubly weird because when I tried to send it through as just $10US (without a conversion), it actually cost me more in fees while sending you less. :|

This money is sent as a donation to start the Halflife2.net minecraft server. It is being sent in the form of zeroes and ones. Your handy paypal service is willing to convert these zeroes and ones back into U.S. Dollars, however they may or may not decide to keep some of the zeroes or ones as a fee.


We technically have enough to start the server now at $40. We'll go with a 24 player server with 2GB for now. If we need 32 player server and the 4GB it offers, we can upgrade. It's $5 difference.

No need to rotate people out. They can just donate what they want, when they want. If it pools up for several months worth, that's great, if not... that's fine too. We'll get to our goal each month until one day we just don't have enough support anymore.

I think we pick a day soon(tonight works too) to back up the server and keep it shut down. Everybody can download the server files if they want to have a safekeeping of the world which contains all of their and everyone elses creations. This server transfer might be rocky so having a few backups out there would be nice.

Then I'll buy the server, send them our world so they can install it and we'll get everything up and running.

I work 2 hours late wednesday and thursday, so tonight might be the best night to do it.

EDIT: We're doing the migration now. So, the server will be down for a day or so. (we have to because me and raz work completely different shifts and don't have much time to talk)

That was me, I was going for a kind of joke legal agreement, and I was going to include a section about how the inclusion of a two in the data package would invalidate the transaction, but I quickly ran into the 300 character limit.

FYI just to let you guys know I will have one piece of paypal history on my account soon maybe, but it won't affect the donation money as it won't be funded from that or anything.

And it all depends on whether or not I win this ebay bid on this wacom intuos3 tablet anyway.

I finally won a bid on an Intuos3 6x11 tablet and I got a really damn good deal for it too.

Just for your notes, we had $46.33 in the paypal account before my ebay purchase. my $5 donation is not included in this total, since I pay for the account with my card and when I eventually transfer first month's donations to my bank account I will only be transferring $35 over.

The tablet total price with shipping was $158.50, and I didn't really have a way around using the $46.33 as part of the payment.

So as of now there is $0.0 in the paypal account, and I will be immediately adding $46.33 back into the paypal. (I decided to put an even $47.00 instead)

I'm not taking the first months payment into my bank account yet because we're having all these difficulties with the server, and may end up needing to get a refund.


This is all just a FYI, trying to keep transparency. This is the only possible ebay purchase I had planned for since I've been looking into tablets for a while now.

Okay well Pi hasn't requested any of the money yet for the new server, so I don't know what's up.

At any rate, I'm going to make this post announcing i'm going to be sending the donation money back to the individual donors. Paypal clipped off some money for their own uses when some of you donated, but I intend to add some more funds into my account to compensate for this and give you guys back however much you sent me.

Won't be doing it immediately, but i'll try to get to it over the course of the next week or two... provided you guys are fine with that.

Also I did his last because his is a crappy NZ - US conversion and I don't know how much I need to send back to him! I think it's like 9.62 US dollars for his 13 NZ dollars... so I'll send him 10 US.

You best put that change in a good investment son, and build up an empire! And once you've done so, adopt me and shower me with gifts.
