I miss The Hokey server days... we had good traffic, had minimal problems, and we got a map update every week.

I really like the Earthcraft server run by Ravioli. The only problem is that no one is ever on it. (I have a huge city site cleared and waiting for a group of creative crafters)

Pi's server still hasn't been updated and all of our projects are miles away from each other.... were is the community in that?... might as well be playing single-player.

Didn't hokeys server get griefed to hell though?

The griefing that happened with Hokey's server was hl2.netters or their friends stealing stuff.

The major problem with Hokey's server was that one man had to do so much.

I thought it was just the issue of not having an extra computer to be a dedicated server for it and him wanting to be able to do other things on his comp too. Hokey's server was the bomb though.

Pretty much, yeah... but for people to want cartographer information and stuff he'd have to upload the world periodically too which took forever for him.

A new server is possible. I have a computer just lying around. It would be just a minecraft only computer too. So not too many slowdows or whatever. I could check on it here and there.

Would there be a way to like set up remote desktop access so a trusted individual could check and manage it when you can't? If you'd feel comfortable doing that.

That's actually not a bad idea. I could probably set something up. There are programs for that type of stuff. Not sure what they're named off the top of my head.

Now for the big question... Do you still have a copy of the old save file?

That is a good point. Do we want to generate a new map or use an older one. If we want to use an older one... which one?

The one on Pi's server is very cool.... but we don't have a"HL2.net" city like we had on the original. The Earthcraft map is awesome as well.

Map editor to stick them together, then make warp points to each place. New spawn area for the new blocks and things.

How does that work? wouldn't it be hard to fins a way to merge the two without making it look odd? The project I have on Pi's server is a huge complex build into a set of natural spires and cliffs.

maybe we could extract the seed from Pi's server and generate a fresh world... then we could cut and paste the projects we want to keep into the clean world. This way they would fit.

Do we need to start another thread about this?

I have a copy of all the ones Hokey ever sent me.

The new system doesn't use the same file structure though. So I don't know anything about reclaiming it.

it would mean that backing up the server and uploading it and doing the cartographer and overviewer shit would be so much easier though, since the bulk of my time was spent copying files. hundreds of thousands of tiny files... to vegeta's FTP.

Just launch the level locally and it will do the conversion to the new system. The real question is whether Cartograph supports McRegion yet.

EDIT: A branch of it called Cartograph G does. As do almost all the other map programs.

One Important question is: do we want to revive the old map?

I would imagine we are all better ate building than we were then, and a lot of the buildings on that map were not made with much attention to an aesthetic perspective.

Perhaps a fresh start would be best.

What do you guys think?

I don't give a crap about the old map personally. Too much heartache tied into it for me.

If we were to start with an old map I imagine Pi's would be best. There are some pretty awesome projects on it.

But a new start is also a viable option. We could build a city around the spawn. Set up a central minecart hub, and then expand out.

A new start will also allow us to decide what, if any, mods we want installed and what kind of rules we want (pure survival focus, or more creative)

I think a fresh new map would be great.

Also, that team viewer thing isn't too cpu heavy, is it? The pc is running a 2.2GHz dual core cpu with 3GB of memory.

do you think we will have a white-list or a VIP system? Ravioli's Earthcraft server uses a very cool system. I would highly suggest it. People can visit but they can't place or destroy blocks. VIP's can build but there can also be areas that only the Admin can alter.

Has anyone found mods they like?

I'm gona' miss Pi's server... I wonder if he'll keep it up.

I don't see why it would be.

Any idea how soon the server will be up?

If you don't have time now thats fine.. I can be patient.

There you go. You can play on Pi's server until the new one is up. I'll probably wait until I have a day off to set it up.

YAY!

None of the server I play on are working. I keep on getting an outdated server message. is anyone else having this problem?

I just updated the server to run 1.3 with hmod.
Edit: which has started a new map. Hmm.

Do we have an old map back up?

HMMMM.... its a pretty cool world. Some lag issues as well, but nothing too bad.

I thought Hmod was dead?

Okay the very last donation was returned. Just sent out Bad^Hat's.

Now I have closure on this.

I think we should do it hl2.net only this time. No friends. Just HL2.net and not people who register simply to join the server. People we know, people who participate on the forum. Just keep things simpler, better I think.

Its spring break and I have time to waste!
