Mirror's Edge review.

Bought it, unfortunately been too busy with L4D to start it.

I'd buy the game, but without a multiplayer aspect, I doubt it will hold much water especially since the main campaign is about 7 hours long. I'm going to rent it, and that will probably be it.

No. Get a new dictionary.

No video game immediately changes gameplay style part way through it, therefore its the same thing. Repetitive.

People misuse the word repetitive in a way to mean something gets boring, etc.

Its like explicit, which means uncut. The majority of people just think it means bad.

Seven... I'll probably get it for 360 eventually, because the visuals look enticing.

Maybe ME is sort-of a long-range plan to release a blockbuster ME2.

It arrived in the post today, one day early! :D Made for a great birthday present... to myself.

Played through the tutorial, the prologue and some of the first level. Loving the colours and lighting in the game. Probably the best looking game this year for me.

I've just played a couple of hours, and it seems the Gamespot review is more or less spot-on. The game's focus is obviously on fast, graceful movement by stringing combos together, but there are simply too many times when the flow is interrupted by something immensly trivial. It's often not obvious where to go, and the hint button is only really useful when standing still (it pivots your movement so you start running in the direction it's pointing; this can often throw you right off the edge of a building if you're not careful). There are moments when you need to stop a turn a valve to get rid of steam or push a button to open a door, a gameplay device designed solely to stop you in your tracks and waste your time. The margin of error on many of the jumps is too slim, leading to a lot of checkpoint restarts. There are even elevators you have to sit inside while the next part of the level is loaded!

Combat sucks ass as well, which wouldn't be too bad if you could avoid it entierly, but there are points where you obviously need to fight or you'll die trying to get away. Gun disarms can only be performed when the enemy does a certain animation, so if you've just punched a guy and he's reeling from it, you have to wait for him to attack before you can disarm him. It would be easier just to grab the gun right out of his hands when he's stunned.

The level design is simply too unpolished to take advantage of what Mirror's Edge does best; fast, graceful movement with frantic split-second decisions being made over and over (there's a bit where you're chasing someone over the rooftops, and it's ****ing perfect; your destination is constantly moving and changing, and it forces you to make small, split-second decisions in order to keep up). The core mechanics are wonderful, and if you take the time to learn each level intimately I can see a lot of value to the game. But god-damn, it's frustrating as hell right now and I simply can't be bothered having to play the same damn 30 seconds over and over just to master a few jumps. I can see how this sounds like nit-picking, but beleive me; this game is just a constant ****ing barrage of stupid level design choices.

Story is a yawn-fest as well. I haven't tried the time-trial levels yet, but I bet they're more interesting than the story mode.

Tried the demo and didn't like it that much. The fact I failed to grab onto some pipes 4 times in a row, even though I was landing directly on them, didn't help much.

I'm glad it didn't go for full dynamic lighting and used lightmaps instead. Much more realistic look to the shadows.

I'm pretty sure that bit was a glitch in the demo because, if I know which bit you're talking about, it took me about 20 tries to do in the demo and I did it first time in the full game.

Loving the game so far and the sense of being quite lost and frantic when people are chasing you. A lot of Kage's bad points are my good ones! And I'm sure the DLC will bring some truly interesting levels in January.

As I said earlier in the thread also, DICE have stated that they're working on designing a streamlined map editor for Mirror's Edge ala Far Cry 2's, which will ship with the PC version.

Here's hoping they'll make it a DLC for PS3 and 360 versions as well.

Repetition is boring even though that isn't the meaning. And video games do change gameplay style part way through sometimes. Like flying or driving vehicles in FPS games, or solving puzzles, etc. Those are different gameplay styles.

Also I don't know a single person who has thought that explicit means bad.

I liked it, although I thought it got too dependent on the fighting later on, especially since I tried to go without guns(which was, literally, impossible, so I used them near the end.)
Finished the story mode in a day.
Time trial is fun fun fun.
8.5/10

I wouldn't call those segments a total shift in gameplay, usually just minor distractions.

Yeah...you also don't live in the great country of America!!!!1!1!

Mirror's edge 7/10

Finished it now and I have quickly gotten from slightly miffed from my last post to VERY disappointed and is my biggest disappointment of the year here (considering this was the one game I was looking forward to the most out of everything). I mentioned before the poor combat coupled with the all to often enemy encounters, the complex jumps, the feeling of being lost all too often and these aspects got much worse as I continued.

I found myself incredibly infuriated at the game as I kept repeating the same bits over and over again at LEAST 10 times on easy mode whereas my brother was sitting next to me calmer than me albeit still mad at veteran mode on COD 5.

The story was quite detatched and it didn't bother me at first because I kind of thought as this was played from faith's perspective then the idea of storytelling was as well. It was clear that faith knew some things already that the player didn't and it left me a little in the dark but it was overall okay because this game was largely about the gameplay anyway but by about the 2nd last level they just don't give a **** anymore.

Four main gripes:

1) The
Project icarus
thing was anticlimactic and not handled very well.
2) The plot twist was INCREDIBLY obvious I guessed it around level 5 and it was revealed on level 8.
3) The ending provided NO RESOLUTION AT ALL! It was rushed, provided no closure and tried feebly to set up a sequel but the biggest thing that got was nothing seemed to be achieved and other things that should have been answered straight away where not. When thinking back on the plot I though what did I accomplish? Seemingly nothing.
4) Alot of the characters are underdeveloped leaving their motivations completely up in the air when it comes to piecing the plot together.

But all in all it is still quite enjoyable when the set pieces come together it flows very very well. But if you want to play it either rent it or pick it up when it is cheaper as it is criminally short. Trust me it really is about 6 hours long. Now i am regretting the fact that I didn't buy fallout 3.

Aw hell yeah, that trailer just made up my mind. PC is the way to go, once again

I really liked it, time-trails are fun aswell.
Its the first of a trilogy, so the next one will obvisously have improved gameplay mechanics. Cant wait.
id give it a 8/10

Wow, that's pretty nice. I'm glad I decided to borrow the 360 version from work instead of buying it. I guess I'll be sticking with Nvidia when I replace my 8800 GTX that seems to have bought the farm last night, too.

BTW, how many versions are there of that theme song anyway? I still haven't heard any that I like nearly as much as the one that they used in the very first trailer, that version was just perfect.

I have a question regarding that video, do you have to have a PhysX card to use nVidias PhysX, or can you have your GFX card act as PPU too?

I went looking for answers and didn't come up with anything too promising. PhysX will run on the old Ageia cards, and has been integrated into GeForce 8xxxs and above via updates to Catalyst. Whilst Nvidia have promised to open up the standard to ATI (with the proviso that they must use Nvidia's CUDA compiler, which would be like the big guns switching to 3DFX's Glide 10 years ago, and unlikely to happen), and there was a beta middleware driver that allowed PhysX functionality on the Radeon HD 3xxxs, there have been no more developments since.

Since Ageia's PhysX cards have died out (and supposedly perform worse than a decent Nvidia card), if you're a ATI owner, don't expect to see tearing cloth in Mirror's Edge anytime soon. This really shouldn't matter though, it doesn't effect anything but the most peripheral visual elements.

Had a feeling they'd be doing something a little different for the PC. Which is why I pre-ordered it a week ago :D with a T shirt.

The PC version will supposedly get an easy to use(ala Far Cry 2) map editor, here's hoping the 360 and PS3 users get it via a DLC.

I think the best thing about this game, that we can safely assume, is the soundtrack?

Was it made specifically for this game or did Lisa Miskovsky right it previously and Dice chose it?

It should be a chart entry lol, what with all the evil in the charts these days.

Dunno but Lisa Miskovsky is in my opinion one of Swedens greatest musicians still alive, no pun intended.

You do not need physX (they dont even make them anymore) all you need is a 8800 + Nvidia.

7hrs is enough for me, more would probably make it repetetive and booring.

Holy shit the flash game is fun, they could have easily released it as a DS or GBA game.

I enjoyed the Little Big Planet version of the demo.

Just hired this out for a night. Think I'll be able to finish it?

Are you paying it hourly or is it salaried? If its salaried you could easily make it work overtime without any more cost to you. Just make sure it doesnt form a union with the other games you've hired from before.

Ah yes, very good, very good. :p

Anyway, the question should have been "will I want to finish it." I'm up to chapter 4 and I'm already frustrated with the damn thing. Too much trial and error and trying to find where the **** it wants you to go. Meh, I'll give it another try later, but at this stage I'm pretty glad I picked this up on cheapo monday...

Mirror's Edge

I was at best buy and at a moment of extreme weakness I decided to purchase this game. It looked cool from what I saw online and differs from most of the games I play.

Anyway, this game ****ing sucks...it's fun for about 10 minutes, until you have to deal with armed forces who you either have to ignore (hard) or fight (extrememly hard). Ya, it's fun to jump around like prince of persia, but at what cost? The game has an interesting plot but it's going to gather dust from here on out.

Anyone else play this?
