U want outdated? Check out quotes from planet duke's FAQ. They where still useing the UT engine back then hahahhahah. Poor bastards would be better off making it from the source engine.

They could, most likely, release the SDK today with no negative effects to Valve, HL2, or Steam.

Who knows why they don't.
They dont want to because they don't want the h4x0rz to make anything new for the Stolen Build.

NOLF 2 uses the jupiter (might be jupiter 2) engine. monolith is the company who made the game.

dont you poeple get it?! its not about graphs its about the mods and allways has been
this thing was build from the ground up for modding and will be the only game i play for like the next five year just as i played the last one. i have not played hl1 in years but i play dod ns cs si tfc ever day (right now its ns for me to 5 am ever nite)
all those other games are a waste of my money why because of lack of support for mods. why pay for a game thats only going to give you one play when you can get the mod one and get 100s of games. most retail games just dont cut it any more most fps are just the same as the last and all they got going for them are there graph. damn i dont even play retail games anymore jsut mods
but really how does graph = fun?
before you go judging a game go look at the mods coming now for it or in the works i got like 10 mods sits in a hl2mod fold in my favorites list that look sexy. thats a 11x the play right there

i have looked at the other games and dont see what you guys see
like fry crys Ai looked dumb in the AI demo and graphs did not look good as hl2 and doom 3 looks sexy but only 4 player in muitlplayer so its mosty just single player
staker? its an rpg right? more single player
dont get me wrong i love single palyer but you can only play with an AI so many times before you know all its tricks and/or all the scriped stuff.
its really a big wait of $50 to get a single player only game build on graphs and not fun
and the only single player game i am thinking of getting would be fallout 3 (because the worlds going to be so interactive)

blah( /me just read his rant back to him self)
i need the new types of play an easy to mod engine will give me
and no more of the same old stuff all those other games look like.
(ok here it is i think this next line is the big point of my rant){so all those other games right allready out dated because of lack of mod support} gg (oh and no one is going to support them better then hl2)
(gives up he rant here)

Is it me or did we just talk about that being cancelled in another thread?

i have not read every thread on teh forums as most of them are lame

but to answer I believe yes hl2 seems a tad less impressive after the wave of media from other new next gen fps's. the delay is hurting them.. its sad really because hl2 seems so amazeing yet so out of reach

uh huh, but remember the origional half life, it was more of a spectacle for its envolvement with characters and making you belive that the events could possibly be real using other methods apart from its graphic content. and the intresting story.. remember.. :)

Actually, I liked the graphics and the deathmatch at the time... but the story turned out to be what I played more. Well, at least until all the mods started popping up.

To those who think it's outdated, what part of the game is outdated anyway? Like I said in my previous post it's probably the shadows.
And what do you mean by outdated? Does that mean certain features are inferior to other games already? or that because other games have these features too so HL2 isn't the only one it's outdated?

It's not so much outdated as just one of a fairly large pack now.

Maybe Valve shouldn't lie through their teeth next time.

The graphics are still revolutionary, and the gameplay is still greatly anticipated. If anything, I just have to say that it makes HL2 look -more- playable.

I think you use the world 'revolutionary' pretty lightly there. Games like Stalker, Doom 3, Farcry, among others are slated to have graphics as good, if not better than HL2.

Quake had revolutionary graphics.

sadly...yes....story...story.... the graphics will be nice thou... to play with such a great story(lets hope its a good story) that last one had great story

I was just at Best Buy and saw the Doom 3 Pre Order Boxes. They came with a metal Doom figure and a poster. The boxes were awesome. I downloaded the 170MB Doom 3 trailer from File Planet, and I have to say it looks much better then Half-Life 2. I also think Stalker and Far Cry might beat Half-Life 2 in graphics.

HL2 will be the best combination of all:

Story
Graphics
Online Play
Mods
Physics
Scary Factor (well...maybe not, but those fast moving zombies scare the HELL out of me)

outdated or not...there will be sweet mods...and the physics are great too
still be great to play

I'll get Doom 3 because of the graphics and the scare factor. But as for Far Cry and Stalker..... i don't really care.

I like like the whole atmosphere of Half-Life more than......pretty much every other game i've ever played. I think Doom 3 will be the only contender to that throne. As for outdated graphics......who cares? I still get scared when im playing System Shock 2, and the bad guys in that have weird triangular heads.

I totally agree, besides the graphics excel in certain areas, graphically, Source has the most stunning reflective surfaces.. (DX9 Demo) . and in the E3 demo's (On the floor most noticeably). whos to say the graphics are not at there maximum settings for performance sake (in the E3 Demo).. umm,.. It might be the position of the sun in the DX9 demo :), but you must have noticed that the Antlion Guard doesnt have the slimey effects in the footage from E3, and pictures alike. infact the textures on the creatures look quite Matted.:)

Okay, so here's the way I see it. Physics, AI, graphics (holistically. some parts better- HDR, motion blur, depth of field, some not- shadows), sound, etc... all on par if not better than most upcoming games. Now here's your choice. Do you want something revolutionary in these technical areas (as was said Quake 1 in graphics) or do you want something revolutionary in gameplay(HL1)?
I think that one day we will all look at games without emotional characters and deep story lines and say that that's outdated.

...
oh, and on the graphics issue I still think that a lot of what we are judging is based off the E3 video which doesn't really represent what the real game will look like (I expect better models and textures at least).

better models and textures,,.... that assumes that you can turn up the graphic settings, (hopefully) somehow I think the models are just fine as they are, maybe more clarity on the textures. but then again.. its great as it is. i really cant see valve making big changes like improving models. i mean, How many models must they have in the whole game !, i wouldnt like to count. (i assume you mean changing the construct code, if i got that wrong , my apologies for the rant, ;) ..)

I thought I read somewhere that Valve said they were still working on models. Since they probably have the basics down for all the characters (I hope), then I think they are updating some old ones. And I think the rebel fighters could use some work.

that , i agree with. The rebel fighters look like they just came out of rehab (wearing modified straight jackets). It would be nice if they didnt all look the same.

Truthfully though if their redoing models, it might be a few. but that wud take a bloody long time, lol.. about 4 months infact. :dozey: depends how many characters.

but I know for a fact that they must solve that slight clipping problem.
cause ill be damned if a door gets blown in my face, and starts spinning on my dead body half embeded in the floor

(have you seen that on the bugbait Video?,) its to the right of the Antlion Guard lol)

The physics and graphics will all be matched by many a game that release this spring.. so all they really have left is their "fan base" which has been cut down.. facial expressions alone is nothing magical.. its the gameplay that will keep it good.. thats betting that good mods come out..

Im a little more interested in FarCry as of late.

:bounce:

i dont care what comes out. after tinkering with the beta (im sorry :( ) this game is no1 on my wish list, and always will be until i have the game installed on my HD.

i dont care how other games look, going on HL1 and the tit bits ive seen from HL2 i think the graphics are awesome. sure, some games will have better graphics, so what? look at CS, STILL the most pld online game on the net and look at the graphics. i play cs, i dont really care about the graphics, its the way the game plays which is what matters

Yea - HL2 has missed the boat. I'm sure it will still be a great game, but it will be immersed with others of it's kind. Sorry to say it, but HL2 is already out-of-date even months before it is released.

And the way Steam is going and the inability for Valve to get Condition Zero out, even to this day, is just a joke anymore.

3 Months ago I was really hyped for this game. Today I could really care less.

TBH, Half-life II will be only one out of many contenders by the time it rolls around.

And Gabe& company only got themselves to nlamde for this.

Explain to me how HL2 is already out-of-date, please. Just because other games have the same features, it's out of date? How do you figure?

yup... Haha , .. hahahahahah... HA. thats funny, so how did you come to that conclusion,? being as you actually havnt tried the finished product. Stop trying to annoy HL2 fans, cause I think thats all your trying to do

I agree. What they are doing with characters is years ahead of anyone else. Emotional investment in a game doesn't occur with gimicky stencil shadows or ostentatious use of normal mapping.

Still it will probably take an RPG to full realise the potential ala Vampires.

Well...
When Valve is quiet and hold in their information, that's when everyone starts to lose interest and it makes the game seem more outdated, especially while other games start releasing more info.
An example will be Doom3. Now lots of people are starting to lean towards Doom3 because HL2 is not showing anything and Doom3 has previews and a new website up. Yet I remember back a few months when people were asking if Doom3 was a joke and HL2 was at the top of (almost) everyone's list- of course I told everyone that thought that they were in for a surprise. Why? Because Id didn't say anything while Valve had a half hour video.
A lot of people also seem to have pretty weak memories. When Id said they had per-pixel physics, so many people thought that it was better than HL2. Then we realized that you need per-pixel physics to have crowbar duels and fire debris (the Valve email helped too).

In the time before a game ships, fans are easily swayed by whatever is said by a developer. The main (if not only) influence is what kind of features the developer lists out their game has. In that way, fans are pretty fickle.

i don't wanna read all 5 pages, but i voted "no" because it's gameplay not graphical wow that keeps games around and makes them stellar. case in point: the masses of people still playing hl and mods. btw, of course that's speculation(that the gameplay will be amazing or whatever... but gotta go off past experience and knowledge when trying to make a prediction...)

With games like Painkiller, Stalker and Killzone ( not including Doom3 really ) has Half-Life2's graphics and awe been outdated before its even come out?

At first we all used to say "wow, such amazing graphics" but with the incoming wave of next generation games it really doesn't stand out anymore.

outdated? no way.. I just saw the new screenshots and it looked very promising. It just gets better with time like wine :)

I dont care for Far Cry or S.T.A.L.K.E.R's graphics. Stalkers enviroments are awesome and the skyboxes look mad but im not going to play a game and just stare at the sky or at the water or at the surroundings, especially if im in the middle of a firefight. if i play a game, i play it because its fun, not because its pretty. If you wanna see pretty, step outside and look around

On another note, S.T.A.L.K.E.R just looks boring. Im not gonna walk around from sector to sector just to fight a couple of bad guys. I did that in Operation Flashpoint, except that was with tanks and helicopters and squads. That was fun.

Far Cry just looks like another game with good graphics to me. Haven't seen anything cool or special from it. just vehicles and guys with guns.

Half Life 2's story and gameplay is bound to beat those two hands-down in my opinion

Yeah, dude i saw that. Great animations but i think HL2 is better. Although to be honest i love the Lithtech engine (NOLF 2, TRON, i think its called the Lithtech engine...) when it comes to facial animation.
:D

TRON 2.0 uses the Unreal:Warfare engine if I am not mistaken (and I might be).

Sparta, not a fan of FPS RPGs, are you? STALKER looks fantastic for its genre, it doesn't appeal to everyone. I can't wait for STALKER

From what I've seen of Stalker, it doesn't look like my kind of game. For me, 'non-linear' games need to have loads of variety and content in characters, locales, weapons, quests, stories/plots, etc (I liked GTA:VC).
When I look at the Stalker movies, it's always one guy alone or fighting a couple of other guys in some desolate area... No range of unique characters, dialogue, action sequences, settings, etc... The interviews don't really say much about it either.
