Okay, I'd like to say this is the first time I've ever actually posted a 'Mod Idea' thread without asking for help along with it, so please don’t chew me out if it doesn't belong in this section.

After being away from the mod scene for a while I decided to try my hand at leading a team for the first time, and I've narrowed down quite a few concepts to just a handful of them, this being my personal favorite. Basically, I'd just like feedback from people, what they think of the idea, changes they would recommend, and whether or not there is already a game/mod like this. Also, this will probably not be a mod for Half-Life 2... I'm posting it here because I know this site's mod section is more active than most. Ideally, it'll end up being for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but obviously there’s a lot of unkowns in that game, and a lot is still up for grabs.

The basic concept of the game is this: players take the roles of hunters in the distant future (or perhaps another world altogether) where humans have been forced, by hostile environments dominating most of the earth, to live in small, overcrowded, protected cities. Being unable to sustain all of the life in those small fortresses. Young men and women, as a combination ‘right-of-passage’ and money-making opportunity, will venture out beyond the walls on grand, seasonal hunts throughout the surrounding regions, often staying out in the wilds for months, or even years, at a time. There, they explore through both charted and uncharted regions, staking out water sources or resource centers that could be collected to sustain the masses of humanity in their city-states, and kill dangerous big-game for food and trophy. Players would play in very large maps, using a mixture of high-tech and crude gadgetry and weapons (think Waterworld without all of the water). The maps would also be populated by various types of wildlife, ranging from small thingies to enormous dinosaurs or what-have-you. Players would compete to score ‘Trophy’ by taking down game using their weaponry or traps, or they could make on-the-fly alliances (perhaps using a system akin to that of some RTS games) to work together and take down the biggest predators, and score the most points.

Maps would represent different types of environments (let’s say, a jungle inhabited by giant avians and saurians, a high-altitude mountain forest with various mammals and rodents, and a barren cold desert with reptiles and who knows what else). Players would be fighting one another just as much as the local fauna, and they could use trophy they earn to purchase better weaponry, traps to set, or equipment (such as camo or night-vision).

Although this may be pushing practicality, there could also be room for all sorts of other game types… perhaps the same game but using set teams, missions where the players race to locate a long-lost resource cache out in the wilds (with or without wildlife) or the basic game type but without the predatory animals.

Additionally (again, this is me brainstorming) the way S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s MP seems to be set up, players will be able to save their accounts with certain information (such as equipment) on them. This could allow a player to bring purchased weaponry and equipment with them permanently or perhaps even domesticated animals to use as mounts (now tell me that wouldn’t be cool).

I would try to base the animals on existing creatures, but in slightly (or very) evolved forms. I would set the goal number of animals within reason (ideally, six or seven varieties of ‘big’ creatures and one or two types of small ones for each environment). Research could be done to use as a basis for the varied flora and fauna inhabiting each environment, to create worlds that would be both familiar and alien to players.

Again, this is just a post to pick up ideas from people, and also to get some feedback and reactions. I'm sure angry-lawyer will want to critique the hell out of it, which I would appreciate very much. If you’ve gotten this far, thanks for reading, and sorry for the long post!

Here's a thought...

What if you had a team of hunters who's goal it was to capture or kill a very powerful target. But the prey isn't controled by AI, it's also controled by a human. So one player gets to control this very powerful target and see if he can outplay the team of hunters. Perhaps the prey can win by either evading the hunters until a timer runs out, or by killing off all the hunters with whatever means are available.

That's very similiar to an idea we had (difference being, our idea called for multiple players playing as predators) but I kind of like the idea of one 'super-critter'. The only problem would be it could become unbalanced depending on the number of people playing, and I think there was still some appeal (to me) of having a cutthroat fight for the most trophy... cheap thrills with sheer competition, but which rewarded players who did work together.

You'll have balance problems with anything.

The problem I see with competing for NPC kills is the inevitable kill stealing.

Balancing is probably the most underestimated issue with modding. Takes forever to balance things out right.

You know, this would make a really killer SP mod, or a Co-Op mod, but limited to a X player max, so you dont have 16 people running around, trying to compete for kills by stealing.

I think you would be better basing this more on a Predator Style where you come in a dropship to a completely alien world, and the dropship is your "base." It is where you bring all your kills to. Your kills are tallied and you return to the wilderness. But you have a timelimit, and the goal is to get as much meat (pounds) before the ship blasts off again. So you could go after small easy stuff, and just bring in tons of it, or you could go after the big game and only have to down one or two.

With an SP game you could weave this whole right of passage thing into a twisting tale of treachours hunts, loss of shipmates lives and back-stabbing... and so on.

But you are going to need a really good coder, and that is where you may run into problems, seeing as how most are working already.

Oh and if you want any help, let me know. I can find stuff (IE animals, weapons etc and come up with some myself) and i am pretty good at balancing weapons and monsters into hopefully fun gameplay.
