Monitor trouble

Well, I went to turn my computer on today and the tower starts up fine, sounds like its booting up but then I look at the monitor and notice its not on. At first I think maybe I just need to push the power buttong but it dosn't do anything then I make sure its plugged in and it is. So I make sure everything is plugged in further down the line and its all good, everything is plugged into where it should be. Yet stil I get no power to my monitor, not even the light that lets you know it has power is on. So now I am thinking that the monitor, that is about 1 month after the warrenty expired, is bad.

If you guys have anything I should try just to make sure that its the monitor then your help would be appreciated. I do have another monitor and will be testing to see if that works tomorrow morning but if you have any ideas before then I would like to hear them.

Try a seperate outlet, try another monitor to eliminate video card failure. If vid card is fine, I say the monitor is bork'd D:

What brand of monitor is that?


I'm assuming this is an LCD monitor. LCD doesn't seem to be very reliable.

In all my life, I've never seen a monitor stop working. I've always used CRT monitors though.


I want to get a widescreen LCD, but what seems like once a month I hear about an LCD monitor dying. Makes me want to wait.

I had a 5+ year old crt burn out on me...I tried to turn it on, it made a loud static sound every time I tried and wouldn't turn on.

the monitor would still turn on despite video card failure. also lcds dont go out after 1-2 if they are a good quality brand. im not sure where you get that info from. crts after awhile the light tubes start to go bad. i would get it rma'd if nothing above helps you.

Funny. I've never heard of an LCD out-right dying.

1 or 2.. years? I would be furious if I bought a new monitor and it lasted 1 or 2 years. D:

a TV/monitor should last 8-30 years without any problems, assuming it's not on all the time. 30 being pretty extreme, I mean it will suck by then for sure. Before flat screens, etc. but I know I've got a 20 year old CRT TV that I threw across the room once, and it still works the same as when it was new.


Thats why I don't have a 55" $2500 TV. That bitch better not last 1 or 2 years. I expect at least like 7 or somethin.

I've got a 61" HDTV that been around for 5 years, we've had some kind of super warranty that the guy will come to fix it whenever something goes wrong.

LCDs are way more reliable as well as more efficient than CRTs. Granted I've had my 21" sony CRT for 6 years now and its still running but the picture is dimm and its starting to crap out on me at 85Hz refresh rate. LCDs on the other hand don't lose their brightness or start blinking on you as they wear out. I am yet to have an LCD die on me, and I have lots of them here in the office, some of them dating back to when LCDs were first made widely avilable to the commercial market (one is sitting on my desk that was manufactured in Jan 2001 by gateway and still works).

Patten, I'm guessing your power outlet works, right? I know its a dumb question but a fuse could have blown on that perticular outlet, try a different one.

If the monitor is plugged in and turned on there should be some kind of light on. Even if it is not getting a signal from the PC.

CRTs have a long lifetime (20,000 hrs) but LCDs do have a longer lifetime (30,000 hrs). Although LCDs have millions of pixels and quite a few of them can burn out and the screen is still not considered defective. And the backlights have a lower lifetime than the screen itself.

Well, the monitor was a Viewsonic. It did end up being the monitor that was bad because when I plugged in my old CRT that was lying around it started right up.

I went to the store and they gave me store credit so I just went and picked up a nice little 22" that they had and only paid 15$ for it.

It is wierd that the thing just up and died after such a short time. Oh well, just as long as this one lasts a decent amount of time then I'm happy.
