more good info here...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

23:32.25 <synth> ERIK: if we buy off steam and it "downloads" the game instead of shipping a box, what happens if we want to reinstall?
23:32.40 <ErikJ> synth - You redownload.

23:33.11 <synth> erik: so steam would already know we bought the game?
23:34.07 <ErikJ> synth - Right. The product is tied to your account, not your machine. For instance, if you wanted to got to a cyber cafe and play, you would just enter in your account name and you'd be on your way,

23:35.19 <stigmata> ErikJ -- if the products are tied to you account and not your computer, doesn't this mean that someone could give his account email + password to 10 other people and they could download the game as well?
23:35.40 <ErikJ> stigmata - Yes, it does. But they won't all be able to play at the same time.

23:37.41 <|Oz|FlyingMonkey> Erik, will there be any Dual proccessor support for HL2?
23:38.02 <ErikJ> FlyingMonkey - You really don't get a good performance increase by doing that.

23:37.57 <SiNergY> ErikJ - Any ideas on how much room this game will take, how many cd's it comes with?
23:38.17 <ErikJ> SiNergY - Not sure yet. It's going to be quite large.

23:39.30 <ErikJ> There is a limit on models you can build using the free version of XSI we'll be releasing. There isn't a limit in the engine itself. XSI is a pretty high end modeling suite, I think MOD makers are really going to like it.

23:41.00 <stigmata> ErikJ -- You said only one person can play Steam-downloaded games at a time, does this mean you have to log onto Steam before playing? And if so, what happens if your internet is down?
23:41.24 <ErikJ> stigmata - If your internet connection is down, you're out of luck.

23:42.03 <[AoL]Renshai> erikj - what about lan based games...they will need an internet connection to play then?
23:42.22 <ErikJ> Renshai - We're debating that internally quite a bit right now. Not sure yet.

23:42.53 <Headless> ErikJ - GabeN has been noted as saying that valve will be working on some more 'fun' projects to wind down from HL2. Are Valve considering furthuring the HL plot (or sub plots), through the much hyped (within the industry), episodic content, via steam
23:43.32 <ErikJ> Headless - That is pretty dead on. There will be a whole bunch of things we'll be doing.

23:44.40 <upbeat27> ErikJ - if we buy HL2 at a store... will we be able to play withough internet connection?
23:45.08 <ErikJ> upbeat - Yes.

23:47.10 <cstone> ErikJ: what's to keep people from sharing a single player account via Steam?
23:47.43 <ErikJ> cstone - Nothing really I guess. It's the same as sharing a CD-Key now.

23:48.10 <cstone> ErikJ: will single player need to be connected to the net to validate the key?
23:48.29 <ErikJ> cstone - If you purchase it via Steam, yes.

23:48.41 <Headless> ErikJ - What do you think about Jason Rubin's comments at the recent GDC which suggested improvements in graphics will no longer shift titles?
23:49.14 <ErikJ> Headless - Didn't catch the comment, but clearly graphics are an important piece of telling a story.

23:48.58 <Efficient> Erik, is valve planning on making games other than the HL Series?
23:50.07 <ErikJ> Efficient - There are a number of games that people at Valve want to make.

23:52.35 <[TNT]Zor> Erik: does HL2 have a heavy reliance on actual hdd performance for loading content on the fly?
23:52.54 <ErikJ> TNT - That isn't where we're bound by performance.

Most of the space will be taken by textures, as I understand. So, 3 CD, I think.

Sweet: they want to add voice chat to steam, via the friends menu.

where's the rest of the chat? their was a lot more...

i missed the beginning, and i only posted what i thought was important info.

Nice, loading times will still be nice and smooth then :)

LOL they don't seem too bothered about CD Keys either. I think after I enter mine I'll lock the code away in a vault somewhere, at the mo I've got 2 mates using both my Half Life and Diablo 2 CD Key's frequently and it's pissing me off >_<

All my cd keys are stored on my harddrive. Dunno if that's smart though.

welp...ill be buying hl2 through retail. seems buying it on steam, then having to log on an auth all the time is nazish.

I want the special silver box with the extra goodies...ooooo ahhhh....

Unless the hl2 on steam is going to be heaps cheaper I won't worry about. I'll buy from the store.

man... idk bout u but im gonna buy HL2 in a sotre just to be safe... storms happen and do take down internet at times... unless u got satellite internet

Yea that would be cool. Right now Steam has so much potential to do so many really frickin awesome things... I don't see why people feel the need to bash it constantly. It's not perfect now, but they can do so much with it and its so easy to update so new features can be released whenever they are finished- you don't have to "save them up" for a bigger release patch or whatever. I can think of 100 awesome things you can add to steam and I'm sure Valve already thought of them all.. It's just a matter of streamlining everything they have now and adding more functionality over time

definatley buying retail...that crap about steam having to have a internet connection to play single player is blasphemy...

Then how would u even be able to download from steam if u didn't have an internet connection...

The whole thing about needing an internet connection to validate with steam before playing singleplayer - should only worry those with non-broadband (always on) connections.

My internet is always on, always.

That really sucks the doodle. Best reason i've seen to buy retail. (I was going to buy retail anyways :))

What's to stop people from burning and giving the game to their friends? Blech

I was gonna steam it, but on second thought ill just go with that purty silver box =P

Um.... nothing. And that's exactly the point. The way the steam version works is exactly like how having a cd would work: you can play the game using a purchased copy, but only one game at a time on any computer: no different than if you had to have a cd and key for each machine.

but when I understand it right, u can play singleplayer with a cd copy and a key from a friend, but with steam only one person at a time can play singleplayer with one key. so i think, steam users are better for valve.

that's what i was getting at but i didn't really say it properly.

Why buy on steam, so you can re-download every time you format? When I pay money, I usually want something solid...

You guys do need to realise that steam and similar apps are the future of gaming. Lots of small developers will want to release their games in that way, so they don't need a publisher anymore. And I don't see what the problem is with needing an internet connection to play single player. My internet is always on, has been maybe down for 1 hour the last year. So no problems for me :D

Currently though, there's no point in buying something through Steam.

Ugh. "You guys do need to realise that steam and similar apps are the future of gaming"

It will only be the future of gaming if people like you keep supporting it.

I see no advantages of steam. Especially not for speed/data capped internet areas. It's a step backwards for them.

I don't understand why they don't just allow downloading of the game. Then they could send you a cd key if you sign up. Would be much easier and you wouldn't have to be online to play single player.

Well, of course I'm gonna buy if from the store. I mean, my computer I can controll, my connection I can not.
We have had some problems with the internetconnection at my studentroom so I don't really trust them when it comes to my experience with HL2.

23:37.41 <|Oz|FlyingMonkey> Erik, will there be any Dual proccessor support for HL2?
23:38.02 <ErikJ> FlyingMonkey - You really don't get a good performance increase by doing that.

Nice way of saying: We didnt add it because we dont know how. ;)

Q3 with SMP support gives you and 20%-80% performance increase with dual CPU:s. Not good? (Source: John Carmack)

I was going to anyway, but I'm definitely buying retail Hl2 now. The episodic content sounds great though, let's hope it's not just for the people who bought HL2 on Steam.

you sir are an idiot, man, so, they make this totally amazing game engine but 'cant' enabled hyperthreading support, pff, fool

If you'd read the logs and converstation with valve, you'd know that they have ways to possibly optimise the code 800x using different methods, where dual processor support can only give out 30% max but needs to overhaul the source system to impliment properly.

You people should listen to yourselves talk.

<Dark_Seph> Eric, Do you belive half-life2 Will run on a 1400mhz 333fsb 1gigddr ram Radoen 9700?
<ErikJ> Dark - Yes.

Show off

LOL, that is nothing - he's just some stupid person asking dumb questions

Right on SD1. He didn't say it wasn't a boost, and he didn't say they aren't doing it. He just said that it's not all that big compared to the effort required to maintain it.

It'd be kinda cool if Steam only donwloaded the parts of the game that you need. Like when you first download it it will get the engine and the hazard course and while you play hazard course it would download the first chapter and so on. This way you won't have to wait for a gig sized download to complete before you could play.

One thing I don't like about the whole steam thing is that ISP's have download caps and you have to pay for extra bandwidth. If there are constant big updates it will cost us in ISP fees.

The only people who would be mad about having to connect to the internet are people who just want to pirate the game anyway.

What if it's a dark and stormy night and you're sitting at home wanting to play hl2. And then all of a sudden *zap*, lightning strikes and your inetrnet connection goes down. Wouldn't you be sorry you got your hl2 off steam then.

Thats not exactly true... if your like me you live in the middle of nowhere, and your still using phone lines from 1930 and you can't even get cable because there are no cable lines.... And as someone said early i like to have something solid for my 50/60 bucks I have no intention to pirate the game... for one i'd have to download it to do so, and im not a patient person so waiting 30 hours for my download ware to complete isn't worth my time when i could drive 10 minutes to the store and get brig it home pop in the disc and then go
