More info on "Doom" Movie.

As long as the monsters aren't there because of a disease or experiment gone wrong, and actually from Hell, it should be a good movie. Actually going to Hell would be a plus.

Forget Halo. Forget Grand Theft Auto. Back in the day, there was only one definitive, ass-kicking, glorious game of violence. That game was Doom. The granddaddy of first-person-shooters, the one that started them all.
Well ain't that some bullshit.

It does sound promising but I'm not going to get my hopes up too much.

To most people, DOOM started it all. It started my FPS gaming life. It was probably the first that was as fun as it was and looked as good as it did.

You don't have to get all offended now.

He probably wasn't offended, but I agree, Doom was great and it did change first-person shooters.

Yea I wasn't offended...hell doom also started me on fps games back when I was a wee little boy, but I sure hell know it wasn't the one that started them all.

Just by reading what you wrote, it sounded like you took some offense to what was said. Sorry for misinterpreting it. :)

wolfenstein here :)

Doom back in the early 90's on my dads IBM that had OS/2, don't remember its specs, but thats a long time ago....

Let's just say that Doom was one of the first first-person shooter games. id Software made a lot of first-person shooters. Hover Tank was said to be the first three-dimensional game.

No, they altered the plot so it's now in a different setting.

Well then....wtf...

Its about a virus that gets out into a facility and mutates everyone there into ugly creatures. Its not even based on Mars. :hmph:

It's "Resident Evil 3: We are all Doomed because this movie is going to BLOW!!"

R rating is a good sign.
hopefully they don't mess with the story.

Yeah, they raped Doom. Then raped it some more for good measure.
Shouldn't this be in the Films and TV section?

Oh great now I won't be able to watch this. Then again nobody really checks for IDs so who cares.

Well it's better than what we heard before, where Doom wasn't going to involve Hell, Mars, or even space. It was just going to be another Res E, with a mutating virus and everything. I'll be going to see it anyway, whatever they do to it. I mean, at the very least, since The Rock is in it, it's gotta be worth watching, right?

... right?

Maybe it will suck in a good way :)

However the directors track record doesn't look great.

Don't believe the hype.....even house of the dead had good things written about it before it came out. They'll always pull shit like this, and some people will always take them at their word. Hell if I believed half the shit I read, then I'd be at home cooking Daikatana dinner and playing Duke Nukem Forever right now.

Hopefully the whole teleporting aspect will be handled intelligently. I already have some thoughts:

  • What if the teleporter malfuntions and scatters the marines all over the planet or something like that (which is only if they have "Star Trek" type of teleporting technology)?

  • Couldn't they just teleport a bomb?

  • Can they sever the teleporter link from some main control console to quarentine these creatures, effectively marooning them on the planet and keeping them in isolation?

  • Considering this is a "virus", how is sending a group of grunts with heavy weapons going to stop the spread? Won't these grunts get infected too, making the mission cannon anyway?

  • Considering this planet is in a different solar system (yet probably still in the Milky Way), wouldn't it take at least a couple of years just to communicate with it from Earth (let alone teleport a full squad over 5 billion km away)?

Who knows, they might address these issues...
...
...
...
...or not. :p

note: the distance from the Sun to Pluto is 5,906,380,000 km (or 3,670,050,000 miles for you Americans). :)

Doom was THE first FPS to grab peoples attention outside of gamers..mostly because it was sooo evil and satanic..

but I think that is why many people refer to it as THE ONE/the granddaddy or whatever

What's all this talk about it not being on Mars in the future and whot not?

Didn't that preview article clearly state that it WAS going to be like the game?

Kinda...

From the article... said:
4. The story: The script is loosely based on the "Doom 3" videogame . Sometime in the future, John Grimm (Karl Oben), Sarge (The Rock), and a military -esque crew receive a distress call from a science lab on the remote planet Olduvai. (No, that's not a cologne.) They teleport to Olduvai.

Those are the new plot parts, but the following are in true Doom 3 fashion:

From the article... said:
Once on Oldvuai, they're thrown into a maelstrom of dimly-lit hallways, monsters, and bloodshed. The setup might differ slightly from the game, but it's the same meat and potatoes.

While the darkness, blood/gore, and monster-factor remain...they are essentially the same things you would find in nearly every horror-esque-action movie ever made. And even the monsters are sounding iffy thanks to the virus plotline. Although news that there will be a Baron (from Hell?) helps to restore at least a little faith in the movie's authenticity. :D

If it's not on Mars then it's not Doom.

My god :O.

Anyways, rated R is good, means it will keep little shitheads out of the movies when I go to see it, and it will be gory, but will it be good, and will it be doom? I doubt it.

Doom keypoints
Marines - Film has them
Hellgate - No gate here
Said opening of hellgate - Nope, nadda
Hell spawn - Not that I know of.
Scientists that "Got it all wrong" - I would think so.
End boss - Maybe, but he will be a cack zombie

Meh.

I still can't get over the fact that they chose the Rock.

Someone set up Hell the bomb! HAH!

It had to be said.

No it didn't

Uhmm, this is going to be crap. If you look at the link above, they say they made "minor" changes to the concept. The monsters are NOT from hell but as in most piece of crap Hollywood productions it's a nasty super-virus. And marines are no longer "space marines" but SWAT team members. This thing isn't even on Mars. Someone please tell those bastard business men with half-baked movie ideas to go find a comfortable curb to curl up and die on. WHOOP-DEE-****ING-DOO.

I am not surprised though, since there has never been an actually ok movie that was based on a game. Chronicles of Riddick does not count because the movie was BEFORE the game.

EDIT: Ok, there was one game that was not based off of a movie but took some of it's ideas, Alien Versus Predator. Not based on the movies Alien and Predator but a mere experiment suggesting "what if all 3 races met in one room?"... SO that doesn't count either.

So Enter The Matrix doesn't count either? :p
