More screenshot discussion (Babyheadcrab inspired)

In the released 2003 BINK videos I'm sure they showed actual gameplay but I took a pic after the grenade was thrown at the two combine behind the car and...

EDIT: The second picture is from the E3 2004 Video from Gamespy

Hmmm... Well spotted. The plot thickens. ;)

Thanks. That kinda helps with my post. In 2003 they had full hands, and now they don't. :/

Umm the combine in the gamespy video blatantly has all his fingers...

The only place they don't is in a screenshot - the date of which we just don't know. It could be pre-E3 2003 for all we know.

The video footage from this years e3 might not be indicative of the final game, so please don't compare. Valve have changed the levels and improved them a lot from what was first shown in 2003, perhaps in the 2004 videos, they hadn't gotten round to placing some of the highlights such as barrels, rubbish bins, etc into the maps. Also, all the screenshots i have seen in this thread about the Combines having blocked fingers doesn't actually show them having blocked fingers, are there screenshots that clearly show this rather than just blurry screenshots of a guy with his fist clenched or something?

I seriously doubt that. The Combine police in that screenshot is the 2004 model, the 2003 movies they had a different one.
(seen here)

In the movie, I'm seeing the same thumb-index-triple finger block thing, but it is rather hard to judge from a mov file. Hopefully another bink will clear this all up.

Laff thanks for posting a blurrier version of what I already did :). It really doesn't bother me that much as long as the final product still kicks.

Even your insanely blurry image clearly shows five seperate fingers - you're disproving your own point of view.

And there are different combine models, they're not necessarily from different time periods.

You know, I'm sort of getting sick of this.

VALVE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE MAKING THIS GAME, DO YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE THEY'D BE HAPPY WITH SHITTY GRAPHICS?! YOU ARE AN IDIOT IF YOU THINK SO.

/end rant

If we think ths SS's look stupid, they aren't idiots either and they'll see it too. Plus I really don't believe those are high-end specs, HELL, if they're what low-end will look like, BRING IT ON BABY.

Thank you.

damn we need this game badly before we start discussing 2d images.

Thanks for clearing that up with your stolen information. I particularly like my blurry image and it looks like what I said, to me :\

You ARE looking at the place where he's holding the machine gun? I can distinctly see about 3 or 4 fingers.

In this? Yeah, he HAS all his fingers, but they don't look individually modeled. The picture from the 2004 movie is kinda up in the air still I think. We'll have to wait for new binks or screenshots. Or the release ;) This hand argument isn't really worth continuing until then.

The picture with the Combine shooting the water is all groady anyway. You can even see the edge of the map.

Polygon-wise I can see them all as seperate fingers, the shape isn't like a trapezoid, it's more like a stair case... Whether they are animated (have seperate bones)seperately is a different question. Frankly, don't really care, if you are going to do something where there is time to watch the fingers, you also have the ability to change the models so they can do it.

AH .. the model viewr can LOD, maybe you were viewing a LODed model ;)

... damn you guys sure are picky.. but anywho .. in all the models that i could see their hands in the e3 2004 video.. they have 5 seperate fingers

the 2003 pic is PC version

the 2004 pic is XBOX version ;)

Those pictures are definatly not the same area.
(Didn't read the whole thread sorry)

Oh my God! You totally just spoiled the whole game for me.

j/k

In a recent interview, Valve said one of the things that they are working on is adding MORE stuff into the environments because they found playtesters enjoyed having as much stuff as possible to play around with.

But.... I put as much trust in that screenshot as the green coastline shot.... come to think of it, I don't trust any of the screenshots released at that time at all.

Well this just offers more proof to me that the screenshots released recently are from an older build. After all the latest video's show that the coastline is not green like those screenshots

The coastline is a huge area. Ever been to a big park where the grass wasn't always the same shade of green or brown from being muddy?

wtf
the blink videos werent gameplay, these levels were made for the e3 2003

I kind of like "early pics" being kept because they will all help after 2 or 3 years to make an "HL2 Nostalgia."

Wow, in some screenshots you can see how the game has developed. In the early ones you see how the combine were all weird and then their clothes and detail changed to a better black mask and dark blue/yellow uniform. But that's changed too, in recent vids you see that the combine wear masks with green eyesockets and their uniform is black and white, which totally changes their clothing but which makes them look a LOT better, imo.

Alyx? Yeah she's different but her old clothing just sucked compared to the brown jacket, etc.

Valve's really polishing the game :)

All I need to have fun in HL2 is the manipulator and random objects, that thing looks sweet. In the initial shaky cam video at E3 when they're testing physics in the room with the water, plinko machine and all that stuff, the guy picks up a dead Combine soldier. I wonder if it's possible to pick up live enemies?

No you cannot pick up live enemies.

If you highlighted this, you've just officially proven that you, yes, you = moron

Why so much fuzz? Maby the sec screen is just after the fire place(Would explane the windmill)
And seriously.....I dont hope anyone here realy think that they are undeveloping the game or something just because of some screens.

*Refering to E3 2004 movie blurry image where the combine soldier pushes back Gordon - attachment*

Contradicting your own point there as wild said, I can make out out 5 seperate fingers in that blurry image.

Anyway, I'm sure valve just as much as us wants their game's graphics to be top notch. I'm sure we will see detailed models - and the screenshots posted in the past month or two for E3 can be misleading as they are evidently taken on a lower-end machine (otherwise they wouldn't have looked so good in the movies).

what's really frustrating is the fact that some people have been slating the graphics of HL2 based on their own 'research' which basically consists of sifting through screens until they find ones they don't llike, then they hold these up as images of the quality of the whole game.

No one who has playtested the game has raised any issues on the graphics, which, if they were bad, would be one of the first things they would complain about. In fact they have celebrated the graphics, add to this the fact that the game shall need latest technology to run on max settings which probably means it has some fairly nice effects! makes me think that threads like this are pointless examples of argumentative rhetoric.

This is bothering me. I haven't seen a window that looks that good since then. What have they been doing?

I honestly hope that it's just a geometry detail setting, and they release screens of varying visual settings

For instance, in that official shot with the combine barricade, the buildings in the background are basic block shapes.. while, in the E3 2004 trailer, the same scene's buildings are higher geometry

See http://www.halflife2.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5827 for what I mean (lower right is the shot from the trailer)

Who knows for sure, really.. but that window did look alot better than what we see these days

i guess we'll have to wait and see...too tired to debate anymore.
