More screenshot discussion (Babyheadcrab inspired)

same place a lot less interesting....

the zombies looks better in the new build though...

2003 screenshot looks lot better, Valve has managed to degrade quality with time

Wow, you're totally right! Both screenshots have zombies in them!! Never noticed those before... Very interesting.

Well they're the same place. Look at the windmill in the background, the church or whatever is, the structures are virtually identical.

I remember looking at the 2004 shot when it was released a few months ago and criticsizing it for the lack of detail. It needed barrels, and grass and stuff. That 2003 stuff has the detail i wanted!!

I'm finding this totally bizarre.....

Why is older stuff looking better than new stuff?

In that pic it's the same zombie model from 2003, with a new headcrab model. They changed the zombie model for the E3 2004 presentation, though. Most of the things in the movie looked better than the screenshots released before E3, but we didn't see this particular scene.

Yeah, the pre-E3 screens all suxorred for an unknown reason. I'm confident hat they don't reflect the quality of the actual game.

That being said, those are not the same location, unless they removed everything, including several structures. The windmill is visible in nearly every media bit concerning this zombietown. I'd guess that there is more than one.

Edit: lol confident hat :D

I just went and looked at some more pictures, and I think you're right.

In 2003, the combine soldiers had all of their fingers, and they looked nice.

I think that second pic is even older than 2003, because of the really bad skin on Gordon's hand, and Alyx's weird suit that we only saw in like 3 pictures back in early 2003.

In recent pictures, the combine have an index finger and then a three fingered "block" of fingers like most game's enemies have, to save a couple polys.

It's just more evidence that last year we were shown a pseudo version of the game. I have no problem with companies doing that but i do expect that the final version reach the level of detail they put into these mock-up scenes.

In regards to the first post, if you look closely at the wall on the right hand side, the new screenshot seems to be taken from the point-of-view from where the FIRE is in the 2003 screen. That would explain why there is a difference in the amount of stuff in the area. For example, in the 2004 screen he is infront of that scaffold on the left side, in the 2003 screen it is infront of him. Personally, i don't think it's a big deal, but whatever.

whoa never noticed the zombie thing b4 good find mate.. valve maybe changed things around for performance or for presentation.. either is ok for me as long as the final game looks and plays decently :D first one seems to have some sort of "hue" photoshop effect or somthing.. I can't really tell

but fusion I think the lack of detail on the closer shot is because it's...well closer! :p or maybe its a different area all together and just uses some of the same geometry/textures :cat: it is possible that they removed things to help performance or somthing.. or tweaked it around for playability.. lots of factors here.

theres nothing to say those screenshots are from a later build, they are simply new to the media.

Actually I think you are right. It does seem from from the other side of the fire. The pre-E3 2004 pics were all horrible, they literally shocked me that what happened to the game's quality (the zombie's foot is in mid-air!).

Valve if you are listening this, don't try to make the game to be very highly optimizeable for low-end system, because frankly you are ruining the game's quality by cutting down good features for us who use high-end systems. Screw sales, make a game of today's standard.

well .. the second picture is from the leak i'm 80% positive ..

or never mind .. maybe not.

So it's true then.. Valve are UNdeveloping the game

actually that was officially released just a little prior to e3 2004 after the magazine press embargo was unleashed... check gamespy and gamespot etc.

yeah I edited the post .. but it has the exact same low-quality low-detail of the leak .. except the lights are a bit better .. :(

and I know this level is in the leak ..

those are obviously 2 very diffrent combines, there-fore not compareable.

and that you have noway of seeing if the fingers are "blocky" or not since they are very close together and you can't visually see if they are seperated or not.

i dont really care how the graphics are now in the game it dostn matter...

its all about GAMEPLAY!!!!!!!!!...its just like FarCry really nice graphics but bad storybord and bad gameplay...ok farcry wasnt so bad i give it 7 out of 10 =)..

really sherlock? we didn't know that...

C'mon we know they are the different kinds of combine (grunts and the high-ranking ones) but the point is just because they are low-in-ranking doesn't mean they should have less polys.

it's is entirely possible that valve waited to release..you guessed it... OLD SCREENSHOTS... all there work is going into the actual game not screenshots for press sprees.. if they took SS now im sure you would see a much finer level of detail especially with a high spec. machine and everything turned up... keep in mind also that some of these ss might be taken from a workstation computer not designed for playing just for creation

...and what has far cry got to do with this whole thread?

if you look at the ground in the first screenshot you see that it has really bad unfiltered textures. but in the new one they are alot more clear. im pretty sure that the design of the game levels has changed. we dont know how much there-fore can say it was a downgrade. maybe they made the level bigger and more defined in another area. we dont quite know yet.

idk my friend is in the millitary and hes just a private.. he looks like a character from wolf3d... where as his friend is special forces SAS operative... he looks like somebody out of Quake 4... :O

yeah they were probably old..

but the E4 presentation was new, I think Doug said it was from last week's build. (i.e. around may 8th 2004 or something)

not to mention nobody knows what details settings or hardware the capturing machines had... or if AA or FSAA or AF where on

I don't think those "new" screenshots are really new. Because in the leaked alpha all the areas look like those "new" shots. They are just like levels with all the little details gone, so this would lead me to believe that the "new" pics are really infact much older!

Infact I could go to taht same exact area and it would look like that, no fire stuff etc and take a SShot.

i know you didn't dumbass thats why i had to tell you again.

Actually, my three pictures were of three different models. And I can certainly tell that his fingers are melded, because Valve's weird lighting they have on the hands holding a gun firing makes it a lot plainer than it would have been.

That's exactly what I told him too. :)

we dont know on what system the latest screenshots were taken

Maybe the hands have dynamic LOD acting on them, only the highest detail models will have seperate fingers, also that wasn't a very important character, I'm sure the main character models will have seperate fingers.

Look at the new videos I'm sure there's a bit where the combine shows that he has full fingers.

I think the first screenshots look better because that was when the scenes were specifically manufactered to look good... The new shots are just plain game shots, without the extra high poly models that would melt most PCs..

I think the new shots are closer to what the game will look like than the older shots.

(Always be negative when talking/thinking about unreleased games. That way you will never be dissapointed when the game actually does suck. And if it doesn't, the experience of playing it will be even better ;))

I totally agree with you here. Don't get your hopes up too high, because you may very well be setting yourself up for quite a crash.

Anyway, i'm not worrying too much about if the models are bad or not, i'll wait for it to come out before i complain.

That's great, don't talk about stolen material, please.

I plan to reimburse Valve when the game comes out by buying it and prolly the collectors edition.
