Recently, while playing through the hospital fight in Ep. 1 for the tenth time, I noticed that I have a real fondness for killing zombies with cinder blocks. There's something about the compactness of the block combined with it's lethal mass that makes for an especially satisfying kill, particularly when the block impacts the midsection or chest. The television is a close second, for obvious resons: 1) it's compact and reasonably heavy, and 2) there is a special Romeroesque frisson about killing a zombie with a TV. Now, obviously, I love the circular saw--a riot when deployed against a group of standard zombies. But there are so few of the bloody things around.

Consolation prizes go to: killing a Combine regular at close range with the alt-fire of the shotgun (for sheer bloodiness), and pinning any enemy to the wall with the crossbow, espcially when the shot happenes under flukey circumstances (such as nailing a rapelling Combine) and leaves the victim in an unlikely and/or entertaining position. It makes for some great screenies.

What are some of your favourite ways to despatch different enemies? Screenies welcome.

My favorite is hitting rappelling Combine soldiers with a crossbow while I myself am sidestepping or jumping.

In the hospital bit, vaporising the zombie crowd that banged on the door, conveniently with the only energy ball in Episode One. :)

As for saw blades, they're all in Ravenholm.

Wow, come to think of it, you're right. You only get one ball in the whole game after killing that Elite in the closet. Strange.

Those long range kills with the pistol are pretty cool too (headshots). Out of Alyx's attacks, the best one is when she slams down the barrel of her shotgun on her enemy's head. I just barely noticed that today.

That zombie kill is sweet. I can't help but think it's the intended use of that energy ball:

As for it being the only energy ball in Ep. 1, I'm almost sure it's possible to get one from the corpse of an Elite earlier in the level, but it happens very rarely.

And I can think of at least one saw blade after Ravenholm: in the back of a truck inside the radioactive tunnel in Anticitizen One. A bit of a chore getting it out of there, though.

setting alight a combine soldier..

Yeah, an all too seldom seen effect. I like the way they struggle as if to pat the flames out.
There are two prime opportunities to torch combines in Urban Flight.

The first time you see them in episode One, they're also on fire. Remember when Alyx mentions how they're to busy to worry about you?

myn was 3 combine solders ran to me but i was a while away in the distance so i used the crossbow i had one bow left and it got a head shot on all three ov dem in one shot!!

talk about luck lol i didnt tink it could do dat.

I've got two.
1/ it was when i just got into the hospital in ep 1 and two combine guarding the entrance one of them ran away forsome reason (probably cause of the almighy ME).anyway it ran around the corner with back facing me i got out the crossbow and shot it in the back and it fell down with arms up in air. youve gotta see it altough i didnt take a screeny :(

2/also in ep 1, in lowlife in the really dark room. i was walking through minding my own business when this fast zombie just jumped at me out of the dark and i blasted it in the head with secondary shotty in mid air. man that was freaky

anyway those are my two and i bet number two has happened in similiar ways to others

Super grav gun.
Radiator.
Crossbow.
Propeller from Ravenholm traps.

How could I have forgotten:
--The container drop crane kill.
--The buggy toss crane kill.
--The straight-on giant magnet in the face crane kill.
Pure awesomeness. Pure hillarity.

Mine would be shooting antlions with the shotgun at close range/magnum at close range/crossbow/rocketlauncher/flipping them over, and whacking them to death.

:D

I'm evil, huh? :(

I also love to throw grenades in zombie crowded rooms, and or in a window from a zombie crowded room, because almost always, a headcrab flies out the window, and just the thought of all the zombies flying through the air, it's hilarious. :D

OHH! Here's a good one. In nova prospect, after you kill the anty guard, go into that room with the vortigaunt on the chair, take the plug that you have to disable to get through the forcefield, and shoot it at antlions with the gravity gun. They spload. :D

I always found using the bug-bait against the Combine in Nova-Prospekt. That, or during Highway 17, turning off the ground-pounders when Combine soldiers were near them. Vereh nice.

When a zombie throws something at you, catch it with the grav gun and throw it back. Even better, when a combine throws a grenade at you...

Unfortunately, chasing grenades usually gets me killed. :D

When thinking about chucking grenades back at the enemy, you've got to make a split-second decision as to whether or not to do it based on how frequent the beeps are coming from the grenade. I've made quite a few bad decisions. LOL :x

Launching a Combine ball into a crowded room is always useful, too.

I love messing in the console to slow down the death time, and pull off some headshots with the Magnum. Watching them do a complete backflip never gets old.

Also, the best Grav Gun ammo has to be the propane tanks. They are nice and compact, and can be shot extremely quickly at an enemy.

Yeah, and unlike many grav gun projectiles, they're compact enough that they don't interfere with aiming. Essential for the climactic scene of Lowlife. So satisfying to take a whole squad of zombies out whilst giving yourself a handy new light source.

I like getting a clean headshot on a fast zombie with a normal shotgun shot as it jumps to hit me. I usually just hit the body though.

Throwing a grenade back at a soldier.

Headshots with Rocket Launcher.

Pin a soldier to the ceiling with the crossbow.

Also, when you have the Super Grav Gun in the early levels, putting a car on a soldiers head.

Shooting critters out of the air with the shotgun (antlions, fast zombies, headcrabs, etc.) The poison zombies need a 'pull!' vocalization for their headcrab toss.

Chucking grenades back at the Combine.

Shotty-alt fire antlion in midair (watch it gib). :D

As for the crossbow, meh, got old already IMO... but it's still quite funny when it does happen.

Ever play catch with one of the combine energy balls?

Wrong. Possible in single player as well. Fun.

The hook found in Ravenholm and The Lost Coast is also pretty sweet. A one shot kill even on hard.

Also, I love running into Combine troops on balconys or anywhere else high up whislt I've got the shotgun up. I've got a weird obession with killing people and watching their bodies tumble over edges or slumped over railings. You should see me play Oblivion...

well, after the cascade in HL1 when that elivator falls with the scientists in it, I jumped ontop of it right as it's falling, the scientist says "well hello there!"

The knife in CS(S) is my fav, humilliating a real person (especially if you know them) is much more stimulating than a animated character in single player. :D

Reminds me of laying the smackdown on someone with a stunstick in HL2: DM. Thats always fun, especially if the server chirps in with "HUMILIATION".

well if we are talking all valve mp games shovel kills in day of defeat source would get my vote

Induced suicide - coax an Antlion Guard to bang against the wall. Banging till its death.

Strenght competition - compare the strength between an Antlion Guard and the Gravity Gun. Keep blowing a car wreck at the antlion guard with gravity gun until it dies.

That must take a long time...

Now, what grav gun projectiles would you like to see introduced?

Rather than starting a new, similarly themed thread, I thought I'd jack my own thread with the following question: what grav gun projectiles would you like to see introduced? Looks like we'll be getting an ax in Ep. 2, eh?

I'd like to see:

--A large can of, say, stewed tomatoes. I enjoyed the paint can with its humorous zombie-painting special effects, but was a little disappointed with its modest level of lethality. A big heavy can of stewed vegetables wwould be a neat, compact, and deadly addition to Gord's arsenal.

--A bowling ball: nuff said.

--An enemy's weapon: Though slightly unfair, the ability to grab an enemy's smg at close range, then impale him on it would be a humiliation par excellence.

--A boom box: As with the TV, it would simply be fun to kill someone with a ghetto blaster, especially if it crackled and stuttered out a sound bite from an old Grandmaster Flash tape on impact.

I want to be able to slice through enemies at close range with sharp objects carried by the Gravity Gun. Without shooting them, I mean, holding them in the zero point beam D:

That's probably moddable :O

(HL2DM) I once shot a guy on one of those build maps with the crossbow from a ridiculous range. I had to aim like 8m above him and about 70m in front of him (he was running). Then it took like 3 seconds for the bolt to impact. Righ in the head :D
