Most satisfying kill in single player

i want to see a long spike or knife of some kind..

Ever pick up the fisherman's harpoon in Lost Coast? You can grab it when he sets it down to open the gate for you at the beginning. Arguably the most viscous grav gun projectile of them all, it can easily take out two Combine soldiers with one shot and will sometimes pin them as the crossbow does. I don't think it ever shows up anywhere else, though.*

*Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong.

(HL2DM) I once shot a guy on one of those build maps with the crossbow from a ridiculous range. I had to aim like 8m above him and about 70m in front of him (he was running). Then it took like 3 seconds for the bolt to impact. Righ in the head :D

...humiliating.

you see them at climbing the cliff of nova prospekt area, where there are two zombies below this old boat something u have to bring down to climb up the ledge..

The sawblades were a pretty cool addition to the stuff throwable by the Gravity Gun. I agree that more stuff that can impale or slice enemies in half is in order. This important is because although using conventional weapons is cool, it can get a bit repetitive, especially since it's not likely that we're getting any new guns.

@nokori3byo:

I thought the paint can was great too. It was one of the first things that really made me think of how much thought and detail Valve put into this game.

I want to be able to slice through enemies at close range with sharp objects carried by the Gravity Gun. Without shooting them, I mean, holding them in the zero point beam D:

That's probably moddable :O

Manhacks?

Radiator. To the face.

favorite projectile would have to be the harpoon, I've only used it in G-Mod, but it's satisfying pinning combine to the wall with it.

An old, analog telephone. When you nail them, it'll make a little ringing sound.

i remember once dloading a mod of physics objects into gmod. one of them was a filled gas canister. wherever, you shot it, it would emit gas and fly around in the direction the gas emmited from and it killed anyone in its path. if u shot it again, or if it sparked too much, it will start blasting flame and explode after 3 s.

Thanks for the tip. I took one of them into Nova Prospekt. Antlion Guard beware.

Addendum

Holy s***! The harpoon found at the cliffsides kills the Antlion Guard with one shot! Not only that: it propels hims down the hall like a...uh...ragdoll.

Maybe this is already common knowledge to people who've played around with this stuff on G-Mod, but it shocked the hell out of me.

Here's your man breaking down the door to come after me. Kind of hard to see the harpoon, but note the shadow on the floor:

Here's the moment of impact. You can see the harpoon lifting the AG off the ground:

And split second later, having been propelled halfway down the hall:

Here's where his body came to rest. Note that the harpoon travelled about the same distance:

No mods. No cheats.

There's a damn physics object blocker where you enter that room! That's impossible! :D

And yes, he can even be pinned to the wall:

These, sir, are epic finds.

no, i managed to get dogs ballz through. i got the turret through..dotz! there is a way the blocker can be surpassed dude..

anyway, i must agree these are epic finds..

hehe: "antlion guard angry" what a cool subtitle..

How do you get through phys-object blocks anyaway?

Mine was shooting incoming Metrocops in the head from behind an overturned desk with my newly acquired Colt Python Elite.

"You don't mess with Dirty Freeman. Never."

I wonder what happens if you shoot the chopper in Lost Coast with the harpoon...

I now know what happens when you shoot the harpoon at the chopper: nuthin'. Well, it doesn't cause any significant damage anyway.

Kind of reminded me of the time I shot a Combine in the head with a watermelon because I thought it would be funny. This bit of drollery earned me the epigrammatically terse (yet oddly humourless) rejoinder of a shotgun blast in the face. I'll know better next time.

you must realize then antlion spike thing is truly a new find. congratulations. and that "sproing" thing and all..

i guess valve made that physics object to have a very high damage, which is why u only see it in nova prospekt..

Uh, no. After posting those pics I Googled "antlion guard harpoon" and found that old halflife2.net archive thread linked above. Not my find, as it was old news even back then.

I did manage the difficult task of pinning him to the wall, but I doubt I was the first one to do that either. One has to remember though, with several million copies of HL2 in circulation, the odds of someone having shot an antlion guard with a harpoon in a two and a half year period were pretty good.

i thought this would be a good place to ask this...

do you want to enlarge your penis? up to 4 inches bro!!

no but seriously, does everyone know about the antlion with physics...best way I can describe it. When you get to the two guys in the antlion area, and the one gets killed by the onslaught of antlions, the one with him on the rock that was already dead can be manipulated by the grav gun...but no other antlion carcass can be, only that one. Anyway, that's where my most satisfying kill was, killing an antlion by letting that seesaw board smash them over and over

The gravity-gunable antlion is old news. It's either an easter-egg, mapping mistake or glitch. Whichever, I find it mildly interesting.

For some reason, I was also able to manipulate an antlion carcass on the cliffs near the area with the rowboat. Its struck me as odd at the time...

Better yet, when the harpoon hits a wall, the sound effect comes up in the closed captions as "sproing."

The subtitles in this game are awesome. When you finish Ravenholm and enter the rebel base, you see the word "GROAN" appear every few seconds. My screen was filled with "GROAN GROAN GROAN GROAN".

That's the groaning wounded rebels, groaning and moaning because poor Winston got hit.

A few choice subtitles:

And, by popular demand:

I like the idea of tomato can, and the telephone. I think it's about time we had a bit more low-level comic relief/extreme ownage like that. And there should be a factory somewhere that says "FLAVIA" on it.

They should have a harpoon hidden somewhere ep2, as yet another reward for exploring the maps they put so much time and effort into making.

When combine come down a rope and you shoot them with the crossbow nailing them to the wall high up.

Nice idea, but I'm not holding my breath. It's true that the harpoon is an Easter egg item by nature. In the past, though, they've always been found near the water (along the coast in Sandtraps and by the wharf in Lost Coast). Don't know that we'll be seeing any large bodies of water in Ep. 2.

One thing I thought would work well would be Gordon finding himself in an area that was like a huge repository of physics items. One example would be a museum with antique halberds and whatnot behind glass (though admittedly, such a place would likely not exist on Combine ruled Earth). More plausible alternatives might be a tool shed or an underground storeroom full of heavy glass jars and 10kg cans of preserves (ideal for a Hunter fight). The shower room in Nova Prospekt was a great example of an area packed with plausibly situated phys items.

Either way, it's clear that new phys items are a must for future games. We've already seen some new stuff for Ep. 2 (axes, Strider Busters and tires--are they new?).

I'm sure we've seen some screenies that seem to suggest just that. There was that one with the hunter looking in through a window into some sort of warehouse/toolshed looking kind of place, and there was that concept art of a hanger... I've jsut spent a few minutes looking for them but no luck, so far.

I enjoyed using the saw blades in Ravenholm on the zombies. But the most satisfying kills during HL2 was definitely the crossbow head shots.

Harpoon Tour of Terror Continues

Well, I've gone through Nova Prospekt with my trusty harpoon, all the while looking for interesting new things to do.

I learned:

1. Shooting a turret with the harpoon crashes the game. (This actually is not a new discovery, as it was written about by halflife2.net staff in a post from 2005).

2. A lurker shot with the harpoon dies instantly, as do its headcrabs. In fact they stay attached the body. Don't these little guys usually jump ship when their host is killed to continue attacking you?

3. The final three way battle bewteen the Antlion Guard, Nova Prospekt Guards, and Gordon can be given an amusing twist if the player sneaks up behind the AG (conveniently distracted by his quarry) and shoots him in the ass with the harpoon. If the shot is lined up correctly, so that the Myrmidont is right between the player and the Combine guards, you can use its body to bowl over 3 or 4 of the guards as shown here:

(note the Combine on the left) and the final resting place:

4. As with the crossbow, pinning an enemy to the wall with the harpoon will sometimes result in a bizarre misrepresentation of how the body in pinned in relation to where the harpoon itself is located. Consider this poor sod:

Now how do suppose he ended up propped up like that, with a harpoon through the ankle?

For me, pretty much anything you can do to a headcrab to kill it, it's awesome. :D

I like swinging at headcrabs with the crowbar, just as their jump attack is about to scrape me, and they fly backwards to where they just were. :D

Also, on easy, one pulse round kills a headcrab, so you can imagine the fun that is. The headcrabs fly at you, you shoot the pulse, the force of it puts the headcrab at a standstill in midair, and it drops, with a nice little SMACK on the ground. ^^
