That are in desperate need of a sequel. Or should have been bought. Both.

Tribes Vengeance:

I've never played any of the other Tribe games, and since I'm not really a multiplayer person I bought this for the single-player. I did not regret my decision. Did anyone actually play the single-player, or was everybody wailing over the multiplayer or something? The single player is absolutely, most definitely, completely awesome. It flicks back and forth between centuries as it fleshes out its actually pretty good storyline. The gameplay is a whole world of fun and it can be pretty challenging at times. Honestly - get this game. You won't regret it. It’s going pretty cheap now and for around £10 you’re in for a day or twos worth of quality single-player action. And another thing, since nobody bought it, we have to live with the fact that the story won't be resolved, because it ends on a cliffhanger. So well done everybody.

Freedom Fighters:

Now there was confirmation we'd get a sequel. The press release included 'Freedom Fighters 2', and since that day I've been waiting for some news of it. Quite obviously, it didn't come. Maybe the EA stamp put you off? Well, doesn't stop people from lapping up the bloody NBA games. This game is quality gold. The story boils down to this: the Soviets invade the US, take control and subject everyone to mindless propaganda. Que rebellion, que Chris 'the hero' Stone rallying people in the streets and taking the battle to the Ruskies. Somewhere in between there is some absolutely fantastic squad action, and some truly brilliant levels. Maybe if you all go and hunt down a copy we'll get that sequel.

XIII:

I was a little sceptical about this at first; it looked just that little bit too 'out there'. But in the words of Kevin Spacey, I was most definitely WROOONG! XIII follows the story of a guy with amnesia, who wakes up on a beach one morning to find himself being shot at by a bunch of crazed mercenaries - soon enough he's at the centre of a political conspiracy and his told, oh so subtly, he assassinated the President (or was it a presidential candidate? I can't remember). It’s very comicy, with an awesome big-red NOOO! Popping up everything time you shoot someone. But more importantly, its great fun. And you should buy it. Because we never got a sequel. And it ended on the most rattling cliffhanger ever. Oh. My. God. Absolution would be great. But only if you buy it.

Beyond Good and Evil:

Original. Striking. Brilliant. Go buy it.

/Rant. Feel free to add more to the list.

The Incredible Machine.

Oh god, how I wish they would make a next-gen release of this, using the source engine or UE3.

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

-- unique setting. A bit buggy, yes, but the fan-made patches fix it up right good. It was and is such a detailed game. I still love it.

Freedom Fighters was great. Thats a game I play through atl east every 2 months.

Damn straight, FF didn't get the attention it deserved but, gladly, it did receive good reviews. Also Jesper Kyd has made some of his best music in this game, especially to the intro, "March of the Empire.".

One game I would like to mention is Project Eden. It's set in the future in were you take control of 4 UPA members (each with their own special abilities) ordered to be sent down underground, basically they've built a new city onto the old in the game.
What I like most about it is the incredible fun co-operative mode. You can hook up with 2 to 4 players. In 2 player-mode, you can switch between 4 of the characters at any time, with an emphasis heavily on teamwork and puzzle solving over combat.
Sadly the game didn't sell well enough to get a sequel but Core Design was working on it but obviously it was cancelled.

Anyway, an underrated game which should definitely fit anyone who's looking for some co-op fun. ;)

I would say the Theif games, especially number 2. They got good reviews, but then nothings happened for ages. Just think of the possibilities now with all these lighting effects and better gfx cards coming out!!

Mafia, this was regarded as a good game, but it was more, it was one of the best. I love the art of the game, many of the texture's look like professional art work, to me when I play this it's like walking into drawing. Oh and it also had a fantastic story line. I also love the ninteen-thirty's setting it's so very original.
Many people call this game a GTA 3 copy but they actually started makeing it before Rockstar started makeing GTA 3.

Psychonauts

just plain awesome, fun, creative, entertaining and so on.

Bone

strange adventure game.

The Getaway

Features one of (if not the) best script writing for videogames ever. The game takes itself seriously and remained 'mature' throughout, no distractions and straight to the point.

Armed and Dangerous
Syphon Filter
Mafia (even though everyone loves this game, it's not a game you hear a lot about)

Mafia. So many rumors about a sequel but nothing concrete. For every reason that Steven listed.

Project Eden...now I remember it, because they all wore grey suits. I'll pick it up.

I have to disagree, the script writing in The Getaway was absolutely atrocious.

Freedom Fighters was great indeed.

Giants is pretty forgotten now too.

I loved Giants so much, for pc - that is. Such a fantastic underrated Singleplayer experience.

Deus Ex Invisible War

If Deus Ex 1 never came out and it was only this people would realize how much of a good game it really was. But ya i do agree i could have been so much more. None the less its still a very overshadowed game.

Still Life

I dont even know how many people got this game. Probably only me. But this is one of my all time favorite games. LOVED the story, very deep and mysterious. Filled with drama and horror.

Who ever likes adventure games must have and whoever doesn't but likes to give things a chance must have. I never really liked adventure games but this game wow!

TRON 2.0

Man was this game good and fun. I cant really say much about it now that its been forever since i played it but i remember it being a great game. You know what i think im going to replay this soon.

Unreal II: The Awakening

I really dont know why everyone hated this game. I remember playing it liking the story and gameplay. The worlds where beautiful, guns felt really powerful and had very cool fire modes.

I agree on Unreal II: The Awakening..
That game was crazy fun.

Deus Ex Invisible War was underated as well.

NOLF was also underated (1 and 2).
Lots of people just thought it was a cheap game, and those who bought it was going to get a very nice surprise of a very well done, and fun game.

Hmm... I didn't even know NOLF 1&2 were under rated. I loved those games, using that 60'ies spy movie atmosphere was very original.

Blood 2 the Chosen. Fun shooter, so gory it's funny. Cool weapons. 4 characters that are all different in some stat.

Command and Conquer, I never hear people talk about it. And I've never seen it in a game magazine unless it was released. Best RTS ever.

Still have to play the following games:

Tribes Vengeance
Freedom Fighters
Darwinia (Played Demo, was hawt)
Psychonauts
Bone
Syphon Filter
Still Life
TRON 2.0
Blood 2 the Chosen - Played demo, was fun

Have played the following games:

XIII - It's based off a Belgian comic series, actually. Very fun and original.
Beyond Good and Evil - Still waiting for that sequel.
Sacrifice - Was a bit buggy for me and the gameplay seemed pretty hectic. But if I was a better tactician it probably would have kicked ass :p
The Incredible Machine - It crashed for me on the third or fourth level every time ;(
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura - Man, I even made my own map for that. That was such a ****ing great game I would instantly remake it in Source if I could make mods.
Startopia - It was awesome, but a gamestopping bug stopped from finishing it ;(
Project Eden - The game was fun, but way too buggy (crashes, BSODs)
Mafia - This game rocks so much I want to cry.
Armed and Dangerous - It made me LOL. SHARK GUN OMFG D:
Giants: Citizen Kabuto - I used to be in a clan for this game! :D Now the game is filled with cheaters and hackers and it's hard to find a clean server. I sometimes still play it in singleplayer, just to see the hilarious cutscenes.
Deus Ex Invisible War - "still a very overshadowed game." Pun intended? Yes, it was great. Had loads of fun ninjaing around.
Unreal II: The Awakening - Same with Mafia, I was so damn sad when I watched the end.
NOLF 1 - Was awesome, expansion pack a bit less. Still have to play NOLF 2.
Command and Conquer - Are you kidding me? This game was NOT underrated. It right about received the most attention any RTS has gotten, ever.

I haven't tried the PC version but the PS2 version ran fine except a few bugs and frequently low framerate (although stable for the most part).

PC version was appalling. Anyway, I bought TRON 2.0 and Dungeon Keeper 2 \0/

Rune ...3rd person viking sword fighting featuring online decapitation and dismemberment ..cool game

Hidden and Dangerous 2: one of the best ww2 games ever made ..buggy but great nonetheless

Marathon: the best fps ever made ..begat Halo (inferior)

Nobody mentioned Shenmue :(

Seriously, Shenmue 1 & 2 have to be mave favourite games, if not they're very close to the top.

Outcast

One of the best games I ever played. Its scale is enormous, the story is very engrossing and it was told very well. I plays like a first / third person RPG altho there aren't any RPG parameters to speak of. The ammount of territory you can explore is very big and it is as non-linear as you want it to be. It is almost eight years old now and altho the graphics (voxels!!!) look very basic by todays standards, the gameplay is still quite revolutionary. A quote from the Gamespot review is very funny, esp. when you substitue 'the arrow keys' with 'the WASD keys'.

Gamespot said:
You control Slade with the arrow keys, and you control the camera view with the mouse (you can play from a first- or third-person view). This atypical control scheme takes some getting used to, but it works well in firefights, letting you move freely without losing sight of your targets.

Soldiers: Heroes of WW2

picture(large)
(everything in that picture is destructable.)

featuring four different campaigns ( Russia (rescueing a stolen russian missile truck), Germany (Villers Bocage), UK(SAS misions), and the US (d-day paradrop and on) ) and perhaps the most realistic vehicles to date with accurate armor and penetration values and physics in any game. Everything is destructable and can be used as cover or as a trap.

this game is hard, very hard and I loved every frustrating minute of it. (<3 the Garand and the MG42)

theres a demo of a bonus map on the net, it's hard but gives a fairly accurate idea of what to expect in the game.

WIN! i love h&d2 particurlarly coop online.

yeah mafia owns too, really feel like reinstalling it atm, one of the best stories in a game ever imo.

never got around to getting freedom fighters, still wanna pickup mercenaries too.

I loved freedom fighters ..they really got the commie feel right ..Mercenaries was ok ..Freedom fighters was much better ..although different type of game

I really want to try both Mercs and Freedom Fighters. I have it on good authority that both own my motherf*cking cat. Which is particularly impressive, considering I don't have a cat.

My old favorites that desperately need a sequel. I won't be happy until I play brand new next-gen versions of these two games, Dungeon Master and Archon.

Dungeon Master

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Master_(computer_game)

The game had achieved its sales records and domination of the rankings despite never buying any advertising for the game in the U.S. market.

The following list of awards is comprehensive, but not complete. Notably, it does not include any of the many awards that followed the game's release in Japan in 1990.
Special Award for Artistic Achievement awarded in 1988 by Computer Gaming World
Adventure Game of the Year, 1988 — UK Software Industry Awards
Best Selling Atari ST Title, 1988 — UK Software Industry Awards
Best Role Playing Game, 1988 — PowerPlay Magazine (German)
Best Role Playing Game, 1988 — Tilt Magazine
Best Sound Effects, 1988 — Tilt Magazine
Game of the Year, 1988 — Computer Play Magazine
Best Atari ST Game, 1988 — Computer Play Magazine
Game of the Year, 1988 — 4th Generation Magazine (French)
"Golden Sword" Award ,1988 — The Adventurer's Club of the UK
Best Role Playing Game, 1988 — The Adventurer's Club of the UK
"Beastie Award", 1988 — Dragon Magazine
Best Atari ST Title, 1988 — Dragon Magazine
Best Game, 1989 — Amiga World Magazine
Best Role Playing Game, 1989 — Amiga World Magazine
Best Amiga Game, 1989 — Game Player's Magazine
Best Amiga Game, 1989 — Datormagazin (German)
"Beastie Award" Best Apple //GS Title, 1989 — Dragon Magazine
Best Game, 1989 — Info Magazine
Best of the Amiga, 1989 — Compute Magazine
Inducted as an original member in the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame in 1989
Designated as one of the 100 Best Games by PowerPlay Magazine (German, date uncertain)
Dungeon Master received dozens of prestigious awards including the first ever Special Award for Artistic Achievement from Computer Gaming World (CGW) when it was initially released. It was retired directly from the top spot in the CGW game ratings as one of the original members of the CGW Hall of Fame in November 1989 after having spent almost a year in the top spot with no serious challenger. There was some speculation by the game's developers that the CGW Hall of Fame was created for the purpose of removing Dungeon Master from the CGW ratings list since the game had achieved its sales records and domination of the rankings despite never buying any advertising for the game in the U.S. market.

Archon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archon_(Computer_Game)
Archon may have served as the inspiration for Battle Chess, a computer game of chess where the pieces battle for their spaces. It also inspired some more recent games, including The Unholy War for the PlayStation and Wrath Unleashed for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

The game Mortal Kombat: Deception includes a Chess Kombat mode which is very similar to Archon, including most or all of the wizard spells.

Inside Electronic Arts, Archon is used as the internal name for the Quality Assurance team.

Archon in turn may have been inspired by the holographic chess-like game played by Chewbacca and C3P0 in the 1977 movie Star Wars. That game was played on a rounded table (the Archon playfield is square) but the main idea from the game featured in the movie is represented in the computer game.

Science-fiction author Orson Scott Card reviewed Archon for COMPUTE! Magazine in November 1983.

Yes. I'd love to play a new Shenmue game. What a great game.

Operation: Inner Space - ate way too much of my time up at one point, and one of the most awesome ship creating tools ever. Epic gameplay that's never been reproduced. The only thing that could have made this game better would have been multiplayer.

SunDog - Frozen Legacy - out of all of the millions of games I've played, this is one of the few that remains with me from my really early years. Again, something that's never been redone. Spaceship trading, action, sorta RPG - one of my all-time greats.

DEUS EX.

Mega bomberman.

super smash bro`s melee.

Rome total war.

I shall think of more.

Edit: Red alert.

Edit: DUNGEON KEEPER 1 + 2 :D

A lot of what has already been mentioned here, and additionally Jet Set Radio Future.

They certainly didn't do as well (sales wise) as they should have.
