Mouseless

Touch technology will be the method of controlling portable stuff.

This seems useless. What's wrong with actually having a mouse in your hand?

This is all that needs to be said.

Locked.

I can see this needing intense sensitivity. I doubt it'd be reponsive with fast hand movements.

Carpel Tunnel for one thing. clicking noises, I'd give it a whirl. But I bet its slower. Anyway think of the germs you could keep away....all you need to do is clean the desk space

Seriously? You lack imagination.

For one, a mouse is a separate device from the portable computer. Have you brought a laptop around before? You need to carry the mouse separately or in a bag.

The built-in touch-pads and other methods are horrible in my experience. Nothing can replace the accuracy of a mouse, of course, but I think it's possible that mouseless could approach it, given some advancements in this technology. If it could be built into the laptop like a webcam, then that's even better. Not only that, but you can use your hand on any surface - carpet, for example - hell, you could suspend your hand in the air and do it if required, for example, if the computer was on a pedestal.

And touch technology isn't a perfect solution for everything. It cruds up the screen; it's uncomfortable if you have to hold your hand out; your hand covers part of the screen; it doesn't work for stereoscopic 3D.

I was about to get ready to come up with a serious reply and then I read the last thing you said.

Really?

Woah I sure missed that memo when did you become a moderator?!

I think if the response times could be improved, this would be a much more viable technology. The video shows how laggy it is, though.

True, but this is just proof of concept. Also, I'm not saying this technology is 'it', 'it's here to stay, this is what we've been waiting for', etc. I just think it's an interesting idea and it could be useful in certain situations if they continue to develop it.

I really think as far as portables go, touch is way more convenient than 'invisible mice'

You can use touch in ANY situation. Invisible mice, not so much. It'd look so stupid in some case. You need to have a flat area clear of anything else, where you can rest your hand. And don't tell me just holding your hand in the air is an option, because that's just retarded and uncomfortable.

People don't seem to be complaining about using touch screens with all the cellphones and ipads and shit, I really don't get how you can think this is a better solution.

This is only cool in a 'hey look what we can do' way. It's not practical.

But I never said it was better, that's like saying cars are better than boats. I don't know why you think it has to be one or the other. I said touch screen has some problems too; and mouseless could have useful applications.

Maybe you bring your portable 'clam-shell' computer to your boss to show him something, set it down on the desk and go to it; mouseless. In many cases, touch screen could work better, but it really depends on what you are doing.

Instead of mini keyboards or touch controls which take away screen space. We need holograms in mid air! As big a keyboard or display as you could need. Your mobile display would be like that Verison vs ATT coverage commercial where the map was in the way of viewing the TV.

Seriously though, you are not really loosing hardware going "mouseless". An IR LAZER and camera is on the PC instead of the bottom of the mouse. The distance to the movement is increased and it is getting it's data from multiple points which might cause confusion (like a dirty mouse pad). A quality touch pad would be better...
