ahh yes another dvd question from yours truly. So i recently "came into possession" of a particularly large .avi file, so large in fact that it does not fit on to a standard dvd. Is there any way that i can squeeze the file onto a standard 4.7gb dvd without reducing the quality?

nope,

edit: not unless ur DVD writer supports dual layer. then it will fit on

why do u want to put it on a dvd? to watch it? or to put it on sum1 else PC? im not sure how much space you could save by archiving it in a rar

no i want to watch it, but i dont want to leave it on my computer because it takes up alot of space for nothing. It takes up about 5.5 gigs when put on dvd in 16:9 at 720x480, which is standard dvd quality.

yeh the only way to put it on a dvd is to compress it, which will bum the quality. which isnt fun

That must be a looooong porn film! ;)

Where do you want to watch it once it's on DVD? TV or PC
You will have to re-encode either way. Will take a few hours or more depending on just how fast your PC is.

If you want it on a DVD so you can watch it in any other DVD player then re-encode in MPEG2 format. Keep it at 720x480 resolution for best compatibility but you will have to adjust how many mbps you encode it at. If you use a program like TMPGEnc (should have trial available on their site) then the easiest way would be to use a Varriable BitRate setting. If the picture does not have much action then less bits will be used but the more action it will use more bits too keep the quality.

Otherwise look for a bitrate calculator and use something to re-encode as AVI files in divx or whatever codec you want. VitualDub is a free program.

Videohelp.com is a good site, as is Doom9.org, for guides and forums on video stuff.

Ya, that would be another way. If you download virtual dub you can resave the first half and then resave the last half both as different files. Use direct stream (i think thats it) and it will just copy instead of re-encode.

Yeah, there are ways to split a movie into smaller sections.

Once I downloaded a movie in the form of 2 .rar zips, and when I unziped them it automatically re-spliced them together. I think the guy included a file that would require .rar1 in order to unzip .rar2 and when you unzipped .rar2 it combined the two .rars into one movie file... decidedly more complicated that what you will need to do.

You probably need video editing software and like Asus says be sure to use a format that doesn't lower the quality. Look for something free by using google.

EDIT: sorry looks like Asus already answered this. I'm checking out VirtualDub now.

I hate when people upload movies with a password and don't supply the password. Waste of ****ing time trying to crack it.

wow asus i have to say that TMPGEnc software is pretty amazing. Fit it all onto 1 disc with perfect quality with menus and scene selection and everything. Very good software, and thanx for the tip.

.rar nuff said, srry chap, video quality will suck, but what can ya do :p
