Music: Rate and Discuss

Alright song, but that video contains one of my biggest pet peeves - drumming which isn't properly synced to the audio. How hard can it be, seriously. The guy hits the snare when you hear the snare sound. This is not a difficult concept to grasp, music video makers, it's kind of what you do for a living.

I saw half a Black Keys show at my university earlier this year. It was raining so they played in the gym. It smelled funny and the sound system sucked so it wasn't that great. Supposedly their live show is typically good though.

I always have a hard time keeping the two "Black -something-" bands straight (there's also one called Black Lips). I also get Deerhunter and Deerhoof mixed up.

Anyhow, I've been meaning to post this Dark Dark Dark show. I'm liking the new song that starts around 1:20:50. I dunno why, it's a fairly "simple" song in a way, but this is one of the new songs I remember liking a lot when I saw them perform it live. I kinda like the carnival-ish accordion tune. It makes an interesting backdrop for the singing on this song in particular. Of course the inclusion of horn is always great as well. And I like how they have funny banter/stories in between songs. Lots of their songs are a little sad so it keeps things from getting ultra-depressing :).

Also she makes a kinda funny face around the last or second to last verse, but if I were singing it (poorly), I would probably make that face too, so it's awesome.

Ah wow Mumford and Sons keeps popping up freakin everywhere.

Currently listening to El Ten Eleven. The "poppiest" of the post-rock bands, according to some. They wrote that "Jumping Frenchmen of Maine" song that goes on car commercials (honestly I find that song really annoying). Or possibly it's another similar song on the car commercials. I'm not a huge fan but at the moment the rest of their songs are hitting the spot quite nicely. Upbeat music seems to appeal to me a lot more when I'm ridiculously tired. Might see 'em live in September. Supposedly a good show, with lots of looping and whatnot. I still think the double-neck guitar looks a little silly, although watching him play, it is kinda impressive.

This album makes me want to grab whatever implements of destruction are closest to me and take to the streets, swinging planks of wood riddled with bent, rusty nails into every smiling happy face I come across - "Streetcleaner" is an apt name for this album.

Pearl Jam - Jeremy

Now I never really got into Pearl Jam in the past, I seem to be really late joining the party on music and films that are classics. And Ive been really missing out with these guys. And the only reason I started listening to them now was as a result of hearing their new song Amongst The Waves on Kerrang Radio one day, thinking I liked it and decided to finally sit down and listen to a band I knew of but never really collected.

^Only song of theirs that I like, but it's a good song. Check out NPR Music for video of their Tiny Desk concert.

Just to recap on the rules of this thread -

As a prerequisite of posting in this thread, you must expand upon your rating with, at the very least, a brief paragraph as to why you delegated it said rating. You must discuss, analyse, and critique – “I liked it” is not sufficient, and any posts that do not meet this criteria will be deleted.
I'm currently having my first proper listen through of Animal Collective's Fall Be Kind EP, and I must say I'm impressed. Much more cohesive, flowing, and involving than any of their previous works, perhaps because of the length? (only five tracks, a total of 27 minutes). Each track starts off in a slightly bizarre manner (Graze's Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat-esque intro, complete with pan-pipes) and then, around halfway through, breaks into something propulsive, catchy, and unique (What Would I Want? Sky's clappy, stompy chorus).

I wouldn't consider myself a huge Animal Collective fan; certainly some of their work is excellent, but I'm not much of a lyrics/guitars/verse-chorus structure sort of guy. However this EP fits together so nicely, flows so smoothly, that I can definitely see myself getting in to it even further.

Gavin Bryars - The Sinking of the Titanic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DScTBJ74Q5U

There are several variations on this. The one I have on my computer is 24 minutes long. At the moment I am working on 3 things at once, on a Saturday night, at 11 pm. Pretty insane stress levels. Anyways, I have this playing and it is not helping but at least it is a little soothing.

And if I must discuss the music itself:
It is repetitive and slow. This will turn off 95% of people. The other 5% will perhaps find it beautiful. The story on it is a little interesting. The theme which is repeated is a hymn called "Autumn" that was once thought to have been played as the Titanic sank. But according to some liner notes I read, someone probably mis-heard what hymn was mentioned by the survivor who was interviewed, since it was unlikely that British people would have heard "Autumn". Instead she probably actually said "Aughton."

Basically, this entire piece is 24 minutes of a LIE, but it's pretty, so whatevs.

That reminds me of this song my high school orchestra played I think it was my senior year (I played cello). It was in Master and Commander so that's probably the connection I'm making... boats + orchestra. :p

Still gives me chills when I listen to it.

Move over, Dream Theater.

There's a new Dream Theater in town! :v

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsJpy84ZiGk

Oh god it sounds just like them haha. Listen to that keyboard doodly bit at 2:30 that shit is vintage Jordan Rudess. But hey at least I don't have to put up with James LaBrie post-food poisoning.

Man who am I kidding, I love it. This is like some kind of prog porn or something. It's the same girl we've seen before, doing the same filthy tricks, but her asshole is still tight and her tits point in the right direction so damned if I'm not going to fap I mean listen to her... it.

ANALOGY OVER.

One of my favourite movies. Probably corny, but the most memorable part for me is the ending sequence with the Boccherini score and them sailing back after the French ship. Just a good fuzzy feeling an adventure movie will give me.

The thing that frustrates me about classical is there will be specific pieces from certain eras that I love, but when I try listening to others of the same era they fall flat.

beautiful song. aphex twin did a remix of it called raising the titanic which i use to love and have now just been reminded of it. thanks!

Interesting. I wasn't aware of this, probably because I don't listen to Aphex Twin much. Or at all. I think I maybe tried several years ago, and then I never got back around to it. I still like Gavin Bryars' version(s) more at the moment, but the remix is nice as well esp. through the last half or so.

[edit] ok the first half is really good also. the only bit I'm not quite warming up to is where the strings/choral parts disappear. in a few more listens, I'll probably be ok with that part too.

[edit2] And for some reason I am getting vibes which make me want to post some Arvo Part choral music. So here's a Credo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnIW3RX4UIg

There is a different version I have which I like better (fuller sound) but this is the only one on youtube. My favorite part of his Berliner Messe. And this is just fluff compared to Te Deum which is totally amazing.

only the last 9 minutes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFQ2joN1hJw

I would pay a lot of money to see Te Deum performed live. I actually love his choral music a lot more than some of his more well-known (maybe?) minimalist music, e.g. Fratres, which you may have heard (the first part was used in There Will Be Blood; sadly, the last half was left off).

QUIT WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD lyrics:
Just as fast as you found the waves have crashed down around me.
I'm still searching but out of place. I need your help, I need your grace.
When will this battle end or does it ever end at all.
And we fear what we can't seem to understand.
We believe what we allow ourselves, our selfish lies in the end.
We believe what we allow ourselves, our selfish lies in the end.

But is this the end.
I feel like the word is getting the best of me and it's getting hard to breathe.
I've never been afraid I've never been ashamed.
So let it be. I pray my God you keep me.
If this is my last chance to believe, I'll believe.

The threat of losing all I know is gone.
You can't judge me! You can't save me!
You can't love me so quite while you're ahead!
You've betrayed me now let me go. You've betrayed me I'm letting you know...
The things that you love will consume you.
The fire swallows you whole if you can't make your choice.

But is this the end.
I feel like the world is getting the best of me and it's getting hard to breathe.
I've never been afraid I've never been ashamed.
So let it be. I pray my God you keep me.
If this is my last chance to believe, I'll believe.

Listen to what your heart tells you before it's too late.
It's crying out to love, but is the risk to great?

just bought this and this song rocks my face! this came out over a year ago but I really like their style and it mashes with what I like right now: Screamo/hardcore

A Rotterdam November - Crippling Machine

Just found this band last night, and while they don't have many songs, this is probably one of their best. Supposedly their a christian rock band, but I don't quite see how this could be a christian song (I fail to see a christian message in this). I like it either way. Give it a 4/5

Jay-Z's D'Evils said:
[Chorus: (scratched by DJ Premier)]
"Dear God, I wonder can you save me?" [Snoop Dogg]
"Illuminati want my mind, soul, and my body..." [Prodigy]
"Dear God, I wonder can you save me?"
"Secret society, tryin' to keep they eye on me..." [Prodigy]
"Dear God, I wonder can you save me?"
"Illuminati want my mind, soul, and my body..."
"Dear God, I wonder can you save me?"

[Verse 1]
This shit is wicked on these mean streets
None of my friends speak
We're all tryin' to win, but then again
Maybe it's for the best though, 'cause when they're seein' too much
You know they're tryin' to get you touched
Whoever said illegal was the easy way out couldn't understand the
mechanics
And the workings of the underworld, granted
Nine to five is how to survive, I ain't tryin' to survive
I'm tryin' to live it to the limit and love it a lot
Life ills, poison my body
I used to say '**** mic skills,' and never prayed to God, I prayed to
Gotti
That's right it's wicked, that's life I live it
Ain't askin' for forgiveness for my sins, endz
I break bread with the late heads, picking their brains for angles on
all the evils that the game'll do
It gets dangerous, money and power is changing us
And now we're lethal, infected with D'Evils...

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
We used to fight for building blocks
Now we fight for blocks with buildings that make a killin'
The closest of friends when we first started
But grew apart as the money grew, and soon grew black-hearted
Thinkin' back when we first learned to use rubbers
He never learned so in turn I'm kidnappin' his baby's mother
My hand around her collar, feeding her cheese
She said the taste of dollars was shitty so I fed her fifties
About his whereabouts I wasn't convinced
So I kept feedin' her money 'til her shit started to make sense
Who could ever forsee, we used to stay up all night at slumber parties
now I'm tryin' to rock this bitch to sleep
All the years we were real close
Now I see his fears through her tears, know she's wishin' we were still
close
Don't cry, it is to be
In time, I'll take away your miseries and make 'em mine, D'Evils...

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
My flesh, no nigga could test
My soul is possessed by D'Evils in the form of diamonds and lexuses
The exorcist, got me doin' skits like Homie
You don't know me, but the whole world owe me
Strip!
Was thought to be a pleasant guy all my ****in' life
So now I'm down for whatever, ain't nothing nice
Throughout my junior high years it was all friendly
But now this higher learnin' got the Remy in me
Liquors invaded my kidneys
Got me ready to lick off, mama forgive me
I can't be held accountable, D'Evils beating me down, boo
Got me runnin' with guys, makin' G's, tellin' lies that sound true
Come test me, I never cower
For the love of money, son, I'm givin' lead showers
Stop screamin', you know the demon said it's best to die
And even if Jehovah witness, bet he'll never testify, D'Evils...

Brian Wilson is a genius.

Thanks to PvtRyan for turning me onto Demians earlier in the thread, Building an Empire is sublime. Trying to get into his new album, Mute, but it's a lot rawer and doesn't retain much of the style of his first. Digging the opener though, that grimy guitar sound is great -

Actually, anyone else notice anything familiar about that track? Not calling plagiarism or anything, but that drumbeat is incredibly similar to the beat on Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle. And if that guitar part at 3:25 doesn't make you think of a certain other APC song, I don't know what to tell you. :p

Also discovered these guys... somewhere. Really nice melancholy post-something awesomeness. God why do I always find these bands years after they've disbanded or stopped being good.

Heh, you're ahead of me, didn't know there was a new album. I'll give it a listen, thanks for the heads up.

If you were in the same room as me I'd punch you in the throat, jam my fist in to your mouth, grab the back of your tongue, rip it out of your mouth, kick you in the balls, jam my index fingers through your eyes, in to your brain, and rip out whatever defective piece of shit you've got in there that's making you listen to PENDULUM

James Blake kind of sounds like the future, if the future was bassy and fuzzy and syncopated and smeared with R&B. I'll Stay is a track from his latest EP, CMYK, released a while back on Belgian badasses R&S. Classically trained, Jazz trained, James Blake makes stuff that I guess maybe you could maybe call dubstep but really who knows these days
