Music: Rate and Discuss

UK music scene is at the strongest I've seen it for a while Dynasty. Not really a fan of Young Guns.

Laura Marling - Devil's Spoke

Puts all these teeny bopper "musicians" to shame. She's only 20 years old and has already been nominated for the Mercury Music Award twice.

The xx - Crystalised

Not really sure if they deserved the aforementioned award but the album creates a brilliant atmosphere throughout.

Mystery Jets - Alice Springs

Great band, good album.

The Villagers - Becoming A Jackal

These guys are from Ireland but that's near enough :p

Demon's Souls OST!

this has been playing everytime I go online, its perfect for this time of year too with Halloween creeping up. I want the second game to have very similar music

if you click the link you can see all the music on the right pane, or here is all the OSTs for games you could think of! (I'm sure there are more out there but this Collection is simply amazing)

carry is probably my favourite track from what i consider to be a flawlessly perfect record. i finally found it on vinyl a few weeks back and have it on order, but it hasn't arrived yet. worrying.

currently repeating/wearing out/obsessed with the new alpinist album lichtlaerm. on my seventh or eighth playthrough right now, so so good. four young germans playing horribly fast crust/d-beat with some truely crushingly heavy darker tones inbetween. desperate to find this LP sometime soon, it's possibly my favourite release this year and i've only had it for a day.

Dido - Stoned

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8a3tXQFib0

Effing LOVE Dido, but she's one of those singers that is under-rated, quiet, doesnt release much, and you're slightly ashamed of liking.

But she has such an incredibly voice, and the music itself is always so damn relaxing. She's the kind of singer you have playing in the background when you have alot of people round, a sophisticated gathering if you will.

Ben's Brother - Time. 10/10 I heard this on episode 3 of Nearly Famous and now i absolutely love it! I could listen to it over and over!

Dark Dark Dark - new album Wild Go via preorder

They seem to be moving from "gypsy folk" more toward "chamber folk." Very excellent stuff. It works well as a fall album -- a bunch of moody songs mixed in with a few relatively (but not overly) cheery ones.

Also, I admit to liking Dido a lot, way back when. Like back when one of her songs was used on that tv show Roswell, which I will not admit to liking (looking back, it was a stupid show with some pretty terrible acting). Even bought a couple of Dido albums. Live videos on youtube are pretty disappointing though -- not necessarily for the singing, but everything else was totally overdone on the ones I've seen.

[edit] After many listens, I rate Wild Go at 9.5/10.

In addition I provide a naked butt picture.

[beach house]

To me this woman's voice is hypnotic and very raw loved it when I first heard it. Reminds me of some female singer from the 60's.

Yep they're very good. I like the chilled-out-ness. I feel the guitar parts were more interesting in their older stuff though (check out Master of None and Gila).

Fun fact: I found myself in the crowd in a sxsw video of them from '09. Sadly I felt like they didn't "fill" the big outdoor daytime space that well, but I think they'd be great to see in a small venue.

Ya for their older stuff I really like their first album, it's very spacey and strange. For sure Master of None is my favorite off the first album. Have you heard the EP that was released on itunes? It has a cool live version of Gila.

Nope, didn't even know it existed. Thanks for heads up, I'll try to find it.

Earlier today I had some Ra Ra Riot song stuck in my head. Friend is going to their concert tomorrow. Not sure if I feel like going or not. They seem ok, but maybe a bit too bland/happy for my tastes. Although, for some reason I can't fathom, I still like Fanfarlo .

thou - by endurance, we conquer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-NSm0w8uqk

so sludgy i don't even know if i can handle the very basic idea of typing, but i will, because more people need to know of this band. i had a few tracks kicking about that i never really gave the time of day but drawn in by images of the latest release from these baton rouge based DIY sludge/doom crossover hardcore band, summit, i just had to give them one more chance if just for the fantastic imagery shown in the booklet that comes bundled with the cd alone. this record is so thick and so dense with drippingly murky atmosphere that it may just be my new favourite early morning album so far and the very idea of spinning it within the next few winter months, the cold foggy mornings walking to uni through our campus forest, does quite excite me just a tad.

sufjan-stevens-age-of-adz.jpg

Jesus Christ.

Anyone who is a fan of Sufjan Stevens and has listened to the new album knows exactly what I'm talking about. This may have been the biggest change in sound in musical goddamn history. It's ****ing ridiculous.

And I love it.

This abrupt, harsh change is just awesome. For those who don't know, Sufjan is known for his soft vocals, grand lyrics, orchestral and folk sound. On this album, it's overwhelmingly electronic, filled with vocal effects and strange noises; these things are unheard of in Sufjan's history. If someone were to say a year ago that this album would come out, no one would believe them. And unlike a lot of sudden sound changes, it works magically. It's still grand, it still had this larger-than-life sound but it's completely different.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a musical genius on our hands. Don't miss out.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven - Antennas to Heaven (Antennas to Heaven)
(Artist - Album - Track (Movement)... heh)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZwH2c6VIU

Best end to an album. I mean this not in the sense of just the song/sounds themselves. Last two minutes are amazing, but even moreso taken with the previous three minutes of drone, and best when you start from Lift Yr Skinny Fists and listen listen listen all the way through to Antennas to Heaven (they certainly named the album aptly :p). Last bit is even a little reminiscent of Brian Eno's An Ending (Ascent) except darker and more antenna-ey (I don't know how to describe that...).

Only other closer that comes anywhere close is maybe Mono's Everlasting Light, at the end of a live show (I used to hate the song from the studio recording until I saw it live). Because everything else they play is pretty brutal/depressing, and the way they end Everlasting Light is so triumphant.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Gamelan
(part 1)
(part 2)

One of two unreleased songs, available only via live recordings. The other being Albanian. I haven't listened to either of these songs much, despite having downloaded them long ago. My friend got me to watch a vid of Albanian, so I figured I'd give Gamelan a listen also.

And... WOW.

If you want to hear what Godspeed would sound like if they were happy... first part (of part 1). It's a little bit Sigur Ros-ian -- certain parts are reminiscent of modern version of Haffsol. Overall, it's pretty amazing. Almost doesn't sound like Godspeed at all.

And part 2 is just really cool.

Muse live in concert: 10/10
Seriously the greatest concert I've gone to. EVER. They sound 100x better live and they already sounded grand.

Pulled Apart By Horses - High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlGYwXdgpY8

Been listening to these guys a lot recently. They're not the most musically or lyrically gifted but there is something about their album which has got me hooked.

Dinosaur Pile-Up - Mona Lisa <----- (Music starts at 1:15)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOrK3FRxYd8&feature=related

They played at Exeter the other day and were pretty good live. Their sound is a bit Nirvana/Foo Fighters-ish but I'd say the album is worth a listen to. Especially if you like Nirvana/Foo Fighters.

Pulled Apart By Horses lead singer used to be in Dinosaur Pile-Up. I think.
