Well, not exactly... but close!

August 29, 2005

SCIENTISTS have created "miracle mice" that can regenerate amputated limbs or damaged vital organs, making them able to recover from injuries that would kill or permanently disable normal animals.

The experimental animals are unique among mammals in their ability to regrow their heart, toes, joints and tail.

And when cells from the test mouse are injected into ordinary mice, they too acquire the ability to regenerate, the US-based researchers say.
Discuss.

Does this mean if we can somehow put this into humans...men could regrow their penis?...or say if they dont like the size of it, slice it off 9 months later I gots me a new one of greater size? :D

I'm sorry :| Uncalled for.

There always has to be at least one person who says something like this in an interesting topic.

Anyhow, yeah that's pretty neat. I might read more in the article in a bit.

No, cause if you cut it off, you'd have a babies penis in 9 months.

I think a more important question (don't get me wrong... growing a penis is a big deal, too) would be: If this is such a beneficial gene, why would evolution have led to that gene being turned off by default in mammals? Wouldn't we be more likely to survive and pass the gene on to our children if we could regrow entire organs? It must have had some sort of drawback, never happened to our species, or only happened to an unlucky few that died before it could become widespread. Still, it would be awesome (in the true sense of the word) if they could get something like that working in humans.

... and, no, it appears they're talking about regrowing full-grown limbs/organs. There's no mention of a mouse regrowing a baby's penis, IIRC.

I fear immortality.. Death should just happen. We should not be finding work arounds of death..

Cheating around death is indeed bad, but, this regeneration stuff would be real nice for people who suffer lost limbs n stuff.

*waits for stern to come into the thread and yell animal abuse"

Sorry...had too. :p

Finally, scientists are trying to do something to help out the tin man :(

The tin man isn't a man and nor is he organic....he doesn't even have a wee wee. :O

Yea he does :/
I can't be the only one who saw the x-rated version of the wizard of oz...

Erm.. i mean, yay for scientific advancements?

... immediately followed by a demand for the scientists to use their own children as test subjects... by No Limit. :E

Look closer... that was just a garden hose attached to a faucet.

This has nothing to do with cheating death as a whole. Just putting it off a little longer, which is what all medical science is about, not cheating death, just putting it off longer.

but will the gene ever work in humans?
Or will the project just "disapear" then we see the slow decrease in Field Medics?

It will be tested, retested for two decades, the scientists decredited, shunned as black magic science, turned into a popular "new" debate, go through 50 years of lobbying for legislation, and never come to fruition. But.. by then we'll all be cyborgs living on Planet Zorbnak II having sexual intercourse with that chick with the three knockers from Total Recall.

I don't need this shiet, I'm immortal.
Gargantou Akhbar?

Adun Toridas!

On topic, that's kind of cool stuff. I'd like to see it happen though

Am I the only one who thought that this was going to be about Wolvie's retractable admantium claws and skeleton?

I thought it was about mice having an adimantium skeleton.

That's not a special "power." That's more of a special "feature."

Can nerve fibers be regenerate too?

EDIT:
Then the researchers used a cryoprobe to freeze parts of the animals' hearts, and watched them grow back again. A similar phenomenon was observed when the optic nerve was severed and the liver partially destroyed.

Oh... seems so... That's awesome.

Seconded. They said the effects seem to only last about 6 months (IIRC) and then they dissapear. So they could be used well in medcial research without making people live forever (Though rich people probably could).

Also could probably end up being the next Botox :)

They will never be short of organs for transplants again!

I thought this was going to be about mice with metal skeleton. How deceiving.

If given to a cow, could this cure world hunger?

Take a leg.
*chomp*
Take a leg.

By this time the first leg has grown back.

I can see each village... owning one cow...
