Hey, check it out! It's my first ever skinned gun model, and my first model ever skinned too. It's my second gun model ever, btw.

Tell me what you think! I'm pretty satisfied, being my first skinning project and all that.. And whatever critique I get, I might not use to change the model, because I kinda consider it a closed chapter, I gotta start on something new now.. :P But critique is stille very welcome, I have to improve, don't I?

Allright, comment away!

Edit: Added the last (nr5) pic.

hmmm, u could smooth group the barrel and shape it a bit better. Also the skin could use a bit more little details to it. Apart from that it looks alright, its hard to comment on the model when it has a skin on (structure etc...).

It also looks a bit too fat. Looking good though but it isn't anything amazing, just good.

it needs the slide sorting out and smoothing but its a good job m8 keep up the good work.

Maybe I should've made myself more clear....

I want crits on the skin, not the model....
The model looks allright now, being my second gun model, and I'm also only going to use it in 3rd person if I ever use it, so I've tried not to make it too detailed.

There's a very small chance that I'll change the model from here on out, because that creates complications with the skin...

anyways, I don't see how the skin is supposed to be more detailed... It's got wear and tear and all that, but you can't see that on a gun unless it's right up your face...

Anyways, more suggestions?

Edit: Keep in mind, this is my FIRST skinninjob ever, and my second gunmodel ever...

looks pritty cool for second model.. i think the skin looks abit bright and i think the gun looks tooo thick and stubby but the scale aint hard to sort out :D

Thanks for your input guys, I mean it! :smoking:

Yeah, fishymumma, that's pretty much what I thought too when I took a step back to review it, I tried to fix it... I guess the black background when you skin plays tricks with your eyes, because I swear it didn't look that bright in photoshop!

And GOoch, what do you mean "sort the slide" ? I can't see any huge n obvious fault with it?

Anyways, better now?

The first pic without lighting, the second with lighting.

Edit: Again, thanks for your help, it really helped me improve the gun! Darker skin did wonders!

the first pic is er well realy dark :(
But the second shot looks ok m8 nice one :)

I ment by sort the slide out....the slide looks to flat on the top.
nice effort though m8 what if any tutorials did you use .?

Yeah, the first pic is a bit dark... It takes a while to render with the lighting, and I didn't have alot of time, couldn't be arsed to try again... :rolling:

I actually didn't use any tuts... (so proud!) :)

I guess I've only tried to get comfortable with the tools first, you know extruding faces, editing edges to create polygons, nothing advanced really, just the basics actually got me quite far, methinks.

I would've used tutorials if I could've found any good ones, but I didn't. Skinning was kind of hard without tuts too, but ti13371on gave me a good skinning tut site for metal... this one:

http://st.gaming-interactive.com/tutorials.htm

if anyone cares.

eh.. about the slide? Please don't tell me it's supposed to be round on the top..?? I only used a sideways pic for reference (in the left viewport), and it looked flat from there...

me goes :frown: then :bonce: then :x

I guess I'll put mine up too... :E
I wonder if this will turn into an "everyone show off your 1911 models" thread.

EDIT: Since it is at 1500 triangles unoptimized (and obviously without unseen faces culled) I was thinking about modeling the grooves in the side... and I still might. It even has the back of the slide shaped the way it is in the reference shot I posted.

WAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;(

Not funny. Sooo not funny at all.

Infomercial: Before skinning the model, you have to unfold all the polygons and reattach them, to get a good uvwmap.

When I recomposed the model, with the uvwmap, the gun was triangulated.

Consequently, my previously beautiful model is a ****ing bitch to work with now.

I cannot, repeat, can not make the slide round on the top, without making it look like (and be) a ugly hack.

Just goes to show I actually should've made even more research before modeling.

Thanks for your input guys, it's been helpful (and excruciatingly painful), but this model and skin are hereby proclaimed dead.

See you later, when I have something else, and new to show.

ps. It looks better ****ing flat anyways... :p

dont be disheartend it looks really good for a first go. but just find as many ref pics of waht your gunna make before you make it to make sure its right the first time :P

thanks man..

I'm wont give up on modeling anytime soon, eventhough this little "incident" pissed me off...
I'm trying out the various phases of game development right now (I've tried modeling, skinning, mapping, concept artistry and coding), and I've come to the conclusion that stuff isn't that damn hard actually..
You just need time, really.

Anyways..
Modeling and skinning the colt was pretty fun, but we've since parted ways... I'm going to have to try something new now.

btw, your models were great, why aren't you showing off your stuff? Are you part of some mod teams? fishymumma, ocybrmano ?

thanks for your help guys.

see you around :)

Deffinatley dont give up modeling m8 youe attempt was realy good and the skinn was nice as well..
What youve got to think of on these forums is that the modeling Expectnacey is reaiy realy high and people some time rip the hell ot of the slightest things for the best most accurate detail (realy annoying sometimes) but i think it makes you a better modler, Just to get that last bit of detail right.

Im soon to post a couple of models up in here and im dreading it..an MP5 and a SIG SAUER P226..
I paid alot of attention to Short_Fuse and his weapon modles, The way he presents his modles is realy cool..

And look here for some nice Close up shots of weapons

Tutorial here for you to start m8 have a good read and follow it step by step and youll see new things and find out were youve been going wrong..

you learn by your mistakes :P

im part of the hell blaze mod team http://hellblaze.hl2files.com/ :D

but i carnt skin.. i can kinda unwrap only done it a few times. its not hard its just really boring and takes ages!

Thanks again, I'll keep trying, no doubt about that.

About the experience on this forum... Yeah, I've been surprised again and again by the skills on this forum. Most everything people show off is (or is nearly) good enough to be used professionally. Must be unusual for a forum to be like that..

GOoch, thx for the links, and good luck with your models.
That guy must have a serious weapon fetish though.. But it sure is useful for modelers...
And yeah, I've checked out Short_fuse's work before, he does really great models actually, would be nice with a tut... :)

fishymumma, try chiliskinner and texporter for unwrapping... It's the only way I can, but there doesn't seem to be any easier ways out there... :x

And thank your very much for the shameless plugging, but I've read up on hellblaze before..
Seems promising, but the teaserposter was so so...

Yes, unwrapping is easily the most boring part of the modeling/skinning process... and it can take a long time to get an efficient map.

I'm not on any mod teams. I just do modeling/skinning/mapping/coding/etc for the learning experience. I enjoy doing them all but since modeling gets the fastest results and I'm short on time with my crazy college schedule I tend to do more modeling than anything else. I might work on a mod eventually... but I want to get more experience before jumping into something like that. Though, if a mod wants to use anything that I have done they just have to ask.

model looks great, the skin kinda looks plastic... maybe make it look either scratched up a lil would hamper the plastic effect or make it brand spankin new out the box.
