The easiest way to get real information is to undertake in some social engineering.

I think someone already did it to a Valve employee and he revealed information about the possibility of steam implementing peer-peer downloading to ease the burden on the content servers.

If your an outright random asking about HL2 release dates the chance of anything actually getting revealed are pretty slim. You probably shouldn't have bothered You could have at least said

"Hey it's Gabe here, so we're on for a March 2004 release date then?"

then JohnC says

"Yeah, it looks like we'll be finished mid Feb"
