my friend pirated the game what should i do

The obvious answer is you go to his house, into his room, turn on his computer...and play it with him ^_^.

how dare you accuse me...i am a proud owner of the game...and have been since the day it came out and i went to my mall and got it....quite stereotypical of you

Sorry, I shouldve sterotyped you as a moron if you couldn't see the obvious sarchasm.

Honestly though, show some loyalty to your freinds and dont come around an internet forum asking for advice on how to backstab them. Freindship is more important than Valves profits. If he cant do the right thing becasuse it is the right thing to do it will catch up with him eventually. The best thing you can do is try and guide him, and not go behind his back pulling lame ass shit for attention on an internet forum.

Well I think I should stereotype you as a moron for misspelling "sarcasm" and "stereotype"

Hehe, just kidding. But you've gotta admit, those typos were just too delicious to not make a stupid smartass comment :D

Agreed. :p

Who cares? Half Life 2 is just a stupid game you play for a couple of hours and then forget about it... If Valve goes bankrupt, which is pretty much out of the question, there's plenty of other games and activities to go around...

im sorry, but most of you people are the worst friends ever.

bunch of rats.

you dont tell on a friend, thats just wrong man.

Maybe you guys dont have friends that you guys dont understand that.

I'm not up for sending the hacker down, but he should pay for the game. Don't know how, it's not a problem I have to solve. The problem with online piracy is that it's a disconnect from the physical product - most likely even the guys that cracked and 'torrented the software wouldn't walk out of a games store with a copy under their arm. But the copy they have still has millions of pounds worth of hours invested in it. It's an 'old' 21st century problem.

There's a difference between being a mate and a real friend. The guy should learn some respect, and listen to his friend when he says he should pay for the game.

Why do I care?

ok ive decided im not goign to rat him out..i believe that he should (in his right mind) buy the game...he was a huge halo fan and was blown out of the water with hl2. sooner or later when he encounters a problem he will most likely go out and get the game

It's not like he'll be getting anything extra from buying it...

I can't see the point in telling the authorities about him, cos its pretty obvious where he'll go first to find out how they knew...YOU!

The fact of the matter is that Valve/Steam will eventually ban his account, and probably by doing so, his IP too.
Then he'd be stuffed for playing any game now or in the future that relies on Steam.

And I can't believe that everyone who recommends that you grass on him, Are pefect little Angels who have never done anything entirely Illegal on there PC.
This infinite list includes...Backing up any disc, windows, games programs etc.
Downloading one MP3 from P2P.
Creating an image on your drive of any program using Al*oh*l .
Unlocking any trial software using a downloaded key, keygen, serial etc.

And YES before you ask, I did buy HL2, And I support game developers for the hard work they do by Buying all my games.

What I suggest you do...Is explain to your friend..What will happen if Steam bans his account.
If he is using his ISP's email to setup the Steam account, This is even worse, since they can get his IP, address details etc all from his ISP email address.
There are quite a few programs that can do this anyway, So a Multi-milllion corporation is'nt gonna have much trouble.

there is a very easy way to play hl2 without steam which i shouldnt say here

Are you kidding?

sjeez man, steam just makes it easier to also be able to play the game online, i tought everyone knew that by now.

Well I hate to buck the trend of "Kill him, then rape him in the bunghole" but you know what I think you should do?

Buy the game for him. Maybe for a Birthday present, maybe just a Tuesday present. It would clear your conscience and help your friendship!
thats the best idea i've heard so far

, maybe it's precisely that we are treating this as a purely hypothetical situation, is the reason for us suggesting he turns his friend in.
Also, maybe we're better friends than you'll ever be, since games companies are starting to clamp down on warez users, and bryans friend could (by a chance happening) have his computer, and about £20,000 (Average lawsuit claim from big companies) for pirating one game. I wouldn't like to see that happen to any of my friends.

I actually suggest you either buy it for your friend (Taken from corkscru74, earlier in the thread), and you could use "Winter-een-mas" - The popular gamers holiday, as an excuse. Or, you could tell him the dangers of warezing programs, especially that warezing programs means less money for the developer, and, therefore, less money to make new and exciting games with.

But it's truley up to you. :)

winter - een - mas ???

whassat??

i wanan celebrate it by gettgin dunk and completing hl2 fast!!! tell me

Get a life. You're not the police, ratting someone out only ruins your opportunities in life and destroys your reputation.

Valve WILL catch up with him anyways. Need do nothing. For those of you that think Warez is cool. Well you are the only lame ones. Depite the fact that a lot of it carries virus's of one type or another, Warez is completely illegal. There is no difference between Warez and walking into EB and stealing the disc off the shelf. Many of you would not do that.
Well, there is ONE *very* important difference. Downloading it is a hell of a lot easier than walking into the store and stealing it. And that's exactly the problem.

Not quite. Remember, online, it's nothing more then a bunch of zero's and one's in sequence. You can't copyright a sequence of overused daily items...

So what is there really left?

"It doesn't have to be painful, just a little cyanide slipped into his tea."

Do i have to say cold case?

ok is this just a single copy of the game? He isn't selling it or distrubting it to 1000000 people?

If it's just the single copy no-one will give a woop-la about it. Just say to him he's a moron and move on :p

But of course if he's selling it for a profit, or handing it out to every dog and his owner the authorities would want to know. I'd dob him in probably if he was doing this (i'm a developer and I know i'd be pissed if this was happening on a big scale).

EDIT:

what are you trying to say?

Wedge a crowbar into the face of his monitor. Then he'll take it as a horse-head warning from Freeman himself.

My friend also pirated HL2... but Valve pwned him.

Should you care about whether he pirates the game or not? If he gets caught, you can LAUGH IN HIS FACE until he cries. If he doesn't get caught, I'd say let it go. :)

lol @ you twats saying dob him in. Do you have the morals of rats? It's a ****ing game, god there's some sad pricks on this forum.
