My G-Man Theory (Never heard anyone else say it before).

First of all, you NEVER hear anyone say A Gman, or THAT ONE Gman, always THE Gman THE Gman. Since G in Gman stands for Government, his name is The Government Man. THE. He is THE Government man. So, that leads me to think that, no he's not god, but just a governor. He is the Governor of existence. Hence the name The Gman.

Dunno man, This whole space time travel and stasis is kinda big for a Governor.

The G-Man is Gordon Freeman from the future.

He represents VALVe, the plot. Freeman represents us, free will.

Even if this theory would explain a lot of things, I don't like it, because it makes the HL universe unreal. And it's too easy to explain something by making it unreal... It's like saying that we are in the dream of Freeman...

And why would the Vortigaunts fight Valve ?

It doesn't make the Half-Life universe unreal it makes it look like it doesn't have a Creative Beginning, which means that it could be just a battlefield in which VALVe and we the players are in. The writer against the reader, the plot against free will and so on, are fundamental issue in the Half-Life Universe. I think it's pretty obvious, the community wasn't that happy about the Half-Life 2 ending, we wanted Freeman back and continue the adventure, so VALVe faced something that was against their intentions the way to end the story, they didn't expect that, that's what happens in the game, the plot device G-man was interfered by Vorts and Freeman was taken back.
If G-Man gets stopped by Vorts then who is going to be the plot device for Episode One and Episode Two ??? Exactly, Alyx Vance becomes the character who acts as the plot device in the next 2 installments who guides us to the end of the game and at the same time not obstructing our actions. For VALVe she is very important in order to continue the story who has a significant involvement in the game. And guess what happens in Episode Two ??? G-Man tells Freeman that Alyx has a purpose and she always was important to him since the first Half-Life, then he asks Freeman to see her safely to White Forest. G-Man words "I agreed to abide by certain restrictions" simply mean that G-Man cannot be the plot device as before in Half-Life 2 or in other words VALVe cannot use him as the plot device like it was in Half-Life 2.

In addition, I suppose that the Breengrub tweets were posted to show that everything in the Half-Life universe has a creative beginning, an origin, if that so it means that everything in the Half-Life universe can be explained and solved, almost.... Even with all these tweets the origin of G-Man or even the side he works for was not explained, in the tweets it was written something like "Until the world of the Shu'ulathoi somehow came to the attention of...the ones I cannot name."
I guess it's better to keep him in the shadow for further installments cuz G-Man is the plot device, or on the other hand how can you explain something that doesn't require explanation, you probably wonder now, because G-Man is the technical side of the story, a tool that doesn't have a creative beginning in the story, if that so then there is no ending, no explanation, maybe because of that some people think that he is some sort of God, Governor of Existence and so on. That's why the only thing is clear about him is what he can do, what he is capable of, it is clear when you compare his abilities to what we saw in the game, like teleportation stuff and how does it work, Shu'ulathoi abilities and how do they do this, it helps to understand how does that character working, but simple questions like what he is in order to explain his origin I think won't be answered.

Leeet's also not forget that in the beggining Gman was just a codename, althrough it would be both pretty awesome and terrifying to learn that he's "da mastah of da unviersah !", as I like to say that. I'll probably write down my opinions here tomorrow, as it's 1 AM. here, but in short, I have a simillar opinion, but it's just not "fully developed" yet. ( I tend to change things I have created even after I finish them. Which is obviously a big problem. )

Gman might be just someone who represents "the creator" in general, Alyx "the messenger" or "creator's voice" and Freeman his "hands". All of these can be easily proven, as many already claimed that Gordon plays "a messiah". Unfortunately we don't have a lot to discuss on this field, as we can only theorize due to the lack of "canon" information. :/

EDIT: Hospitals, gaah !

I hope that this time nothing will pop up, because someone forgot I have to go for a check up again, or something. :p If I'll have enough time to spare I'll write something here again, soon.

BTW, thanks for editing that post Caste.

I like how we're all not touching this. It's like someone took a dump right in the middle of the room and we're all just staring at it and each other and accepting it and hating it.

If you really want to call someone as God in Half-Life, call VALVe developers, because they created the Half-Life Universe, that would be logical. G-man is a tool used for the plot. And Freeman also is a tool, created for the players, we can call Freeman as Host Body that allows to enter, experience and affect the Half-Life world, thanks to physics and gravity gun of course, that was a big thing for that time. Freeman is personified by every single player, even his face texture is made out of real photos of different people. Considering that fact I guess the only way Freeman will learn to speak is when the Voice recognition will be used in the game, characters responding to our spoken words\commands would be a good idea. Freeman is our eyes, hands and voice, what a tool.

I think the last interview with Gabe Newell proves what I said here, Half-Life and everything in it are tools, it shows the true side/nature of the Half-Life universe. The final nail in the coffin for all dumb theories.

Yea sure. But I'd say he is working for the creators of mankind. Not god(s). (For example, like in Prometheus, they arent really gods but creators.)

YES! Finally someone who got it! Its kinda like the "would you kindly thing" in Bioshock 1, just the basic idea behind the decision to put that in the game

I didn't play too long Bioshock but I have seen walkthrough videos, I don't remember that there was the developers interference with player decisions. Everything goes within the fictional universe and only between the fictional characters. Correct if I'm wrong.
In case of Half-Life, VALVe uses G-Man and Freeman as tools for so called "Self-Insertions" for both sides. In any case, there is a fictional universe, there are characters and events in it, and all of it was interfered by developer and player since the first half-life installment.

well in Bioshock (spoiler alert) they also play with Illusion of free choice. Atlas tells you to do stuff (like the gman) and you just do it, but unlike the gman you dont feel forced to do it, because Atlas lost his family and blabla and he will help you so you do it without questioning anything. And that relationship of the player to the game is in every game, but in Bioshock it is explored in the narrative itself and they do it with the "would you kindly thing", the main character "Jack" is programmed to do whatever the person wants him to do when that person uses the phrase "would you kindly" and Jack does that, the player does that (without knowing, like Jack). Illusion of free choice.

Also the same thing is in Metal Gear Solid (spoiler alert) with "The Patriots" and in MGS2 that the whole mission was just a Simulation and stuff like that :)

Actually the name G-man came from Half-Life: Opposing Force, if you bought a physical copy of the game, in the game manual the developers wrote a couple of journal entries by the main character; Sergeant Adrian Shepard, where he refers to him as a G-man, because Adrian sees the suit and assumes that he works for the Gov because why else would there be an important looking man in a suit at a military base? Here's a section of the entry:

  • "May 3 - Another typically hellish day at base camp... I'll be glad when this is over and I can finally can get assigned a mission. There has been this really weird civie spotted at the base. Rumor is he's from some government branch looking to recruit; others say he's with some secret research group. I would jump at the chance to join. It would be cool just for the change and the adventure."
  • "May 7 - I finally saw the government guy today. I am not sure he is a g-man, but he was wearing a really uptight suit and carrying a briefcase. He looked more like a lawyer or insurance agent to me. I did notice him checking me out. Several times throughout the day I spotted him just watching me during training. I wonder what he's up to..."

the name gman came from the name of the file of his character model

All I can think is "please, no, not more of this". Damn noobs. WE'VE HEARD JUST ABOUT EVERY SINGLE GMAN THEORY THERE IS! PLEASE STOP!

To be fair, most of the one's that we've heard are not.
