Will upgrading from 1 GB ram to 2 GB ram help tremendously? The rest of my specs is Athlon AMD 3700+ and Geforce 7600, but I can't really afford to upgrade everything at once right now.

yes it will "tremendously" or turning off some of the 3d features can help but definatley go with the ram.

How about going back to XP, you know the OS that can actually run games at a playable frame rate.

^ What he said, at least for another half-year or so.

But 2GB of RAM is good to have anyway.

It's mostly your system. I'm on vista and all the games I play have great framerates. Vista is a little more resource hungry than XP but that's why God invented tweaking. Learn 2 tweak.

I'm betting some of the frame rate loss comes from the API or GPU access running outside of the kernel. Ya know how they changed Vista for security and all?

Tweaking can help with getting rid of the 2d effects and process running etc but won't fix that.

Besides, you can tweak or clean up an XP install too.

I did say it was mostly his system, he gave little specs but that video card alone will barely run any of today's games on medium settings.

You guys must drive 1980 cars, wear nothing but value-village clothes and eat from soup kitchens to afford computer upgrades semi-annually.

Upgrade to Windows XP.

god, that was good.

I'm running Vista and I love it... dunno what you guys are crying about.

I would agree with that. Although I was just talking in general, about the graphs I linked to before.

7600 video card is still a top card and sure as hell ran all my games high settings. just because your use to highend hardware doesnt mean you should put down the great mid-range cards. sure its over a year old but its still a kickass card.

You said "ran". That's the point, it'll struggle with today's games. Besides almost every review of Vista mentions the steep system requirements.

I'll just come out and say it, I was a vista basher too. I'm sure if anyone is bored enough to sift through my posts, they'll see me bashing vista and I also said I would hold enough for a year or two before I'd change my OS. Fact is, Vista is good. In fact I like it a lot more than XP.

Why?

In my opinion, its much easier to use. In fact, if the only difference between Vista and XP was the fact that there's a search bar in just about every window, I'd still prefer to use Vista. I love having it on the start menu too... instead of searching through dozens of folders in my "programs" list, all I have to do is enter part of the application's name in the search bar and it pops up nearly instantaneously.

Also, thanks to Aero, general every day use of my computer is much more enjoyable. It may not sound like much, but after staring at the same UI for the past 4 years, Aero is a much welcomed change.

(Note that I'm aware of the myriad 3rd party apps for customizing the XP UI, and I've tried several, and they're all generally a pain and/or too time consuming to work with, and they usually end up crashing my desktop or losing settings or whatever else more often than I'd care to deal with).

It's incredibly funny how you have been able to change all these things in XP for quite some time now. Pain? Time consuming? It takes less than a minute to crack your uxtheme.dll and have access to thousands of user created themes. Do note how this requires no external applications what so ever.

Yeah, well I don't know how to do it, and I don't care to try and figure it out. Plus, I really like all the DX9 eye candy, which isn't available in XP no matter how you slice it.

Yeah, upgrading to Vista for DX9 is the best choice I've ever made.

^Not as good.

Topic creator, you have Vista as do I, get more RAM, as I am about to do in a minute here. My higher end system runs slower than my friend's P4 with XP (though I get better framerates in games *shrug*). If another gig of RAM doesn't cut it, I'll be springing for a faster C2D. 1.86 just barely eeks out enough performance.

DX10 is Vista only, not DX9. You REALLY sound like you know your stuff, so I REALLY value your opinion on these things....

Gotta love that about Vista you need a faster computer to run the same application on Vista compared to XP, even with all the extra crap turned off.

Kyo that is going to make me want to install Windowblinds. I've been tired of the way XP looks since I got it.

I don't like how Microsoft doesn't make it easy to have 2 operating systems - even if they are both MS OS's. I don't like how they don't have backwards compatibility with old stuff.

For example, if I have XP and I want to play an old DOS game, I can't without some 3rd party software to emulate DOS.

If I have Vista, and want to play XP games, I can't?

My brother is a programmer, and he has his PC set up for dual boot, and showed me how to do it with some software - boot magic, partition magic or something.

My brother says, "XP sucks and Vista sucks, but at least I know how to do everything in XP."

I lol'd

Basically, if they want to sell me a several hundred dollar operating system, it has to play my games - and better.

I can see that I will eventually be using Vista, and it might not be that far in the future, but right now, I can't be bothered. It looks sweet, I'll give it that, but I'm the type to disable all the effects in XP if it will give me performance.

The search bar sounds sweet, but I don't need a Search bar anymore since I keep my stuff so organized on my hard drives.

I'm going to organize it some more too. I'll have something like this:

500 GB Drive E:
-Folder "Movies" - subfolder 'Rated G - R' (USA), subfolder 'Rated XXX'

-Folder "Pictures" - subfolders 'scenery', 'Random images', 'Video games', 'Rated X', etc. (with subfolders inside these to further sort them)

-Folder "Music" (with folders for each artist, and more subfolders for their various albums)

500 GB Drive D: Games

Drive C: Windows XP and free software applications like Winamp, adobe reader, etc.

Drive F: Vista OS and free Vista applications

or I may just make a partition for drive C when I finally install Vista and keep them both on C drive.

I like to keep the free stuff on the OS drive. If i need to format, i have no problems re-installing or re-downloading this basic stuff. Xvid, Winamp, Virus checker, Adobe reader, 7 zip, IZARC, Video and Sound drivers, stuff like that

Shut up and read:
YOU shut up and read. He said:

DX9 stuff is most CERTAINLY available in XP "no matter how you slice it".

Let me dumb it down for you even more.

DX9 - in Vista AND XP.

DX10 - Vista only.

He said DX9 stuff was NOT available in XP. Fail.

Noob.

YOU shut up and read. Blah blah blah, rant rant rant. I'm such an angry man.

He was talking about the UI. Don't bother getting vitriolic if you're not going to read the posts you're responding to.

Maybe I should clarify, since several people apparently need to explain what I'm saying for me before everyone else gets it:

I really like all the DX9 UI eye candy, which isn't available in XP no matter how you slice it.

OR if you still don't get it, here's another variation:

I really like all the DX9 eye candy in the UI, which isn't available in XP no matter how you slice it.

FFS, I know that DX9 is available in XP. I've been around here long enough and have made enough substantive contributions to discussions in this software and hardware forum that the lot of you should know I'm not that daft. Go take a few classes in reading comprehension.

I'm not by any means saying that everyone should go out and get Vista. All I'm saying is that I'm running it now, and have been running it for a month or two, and I love it, and I have yet to encounter any problems WHATSOEVER. I work from home, so this is both my work and play computer, so I am using it for 10-12 hours DAILY. All of my apps run wonderfully (Visual Studio 2005, SSMS, Photoshop CS, Office 2007, FireFox, etc), and I can run all the games I play at 1280x1024 with 2-4x AF and AA, depending on the game, and get very decent FPS.

If you want to believe all the shite floating around the internet that Vista is crap, most of it perpetuated by people who haven't even tried it, or even actually seen it save in screenshots, go ahead, but here's someone who uses it regularly telling you its a good and worthwhile upgrade, and a no-brainer if you're buying a new computer.

Yes it is my theme is rather basic you can get the same level of eye candy with little problems. Also there are about a dozen or so shell replacements you could also be using.

FFS can you just say AERO? A User Interface can be many things, heck even as simple as a button. A Graphical User Interface is something else entirely.

As for the highlighted words. Vista performance is slower than XP and that matters to my work as I'm a heavy multitasker, decent FPS doesn't cut it for competitive gaming again for me. Vista is crap this is coming from someone who has used it longer than you since the early betas and release candidates. People aren't lying Vista simply IS NOT worth it until at least SP1 is released. It isn't a no brainier XP is still a more stable better supported OS. Total noobs can use Vista I don't care about those people they are idiots and should do as they wish. Smart folks will avoid Vista for the reasons I've listed.

Not to mention the new pain in the arse license system that totally put my work place off. Home internet users who don't play 3d games really should be using something like Ubuntu, which funnily enough has things such as Compiz and Beryl to make everything look bouncy and better than Aero. When it comes down to it home internet users don't need machines powerful enough to run Vista in the first place.

To reiterate;

#Home internet users (ie mom and dad) don't need Vista.
#Performance whores don't need vista, you try working on a .net project while running two debuggers and a bunch of other stuff in the background.)
#OMG shiny people(includes #1) can use Vista and quit bitching.
#The rest of you can take a hike you'll get bashed no matter what OS you use.

Vista is fine for you and I'm not trying to make you move away from it, I'm trying to tell others to steer clear of it.

If you hadn't of bought Vista you could of upgraded your system to something a lot better AND you would be gaming happily for years to come.

*insert photoshop of Vista logo mixed with Swastika*

You're saying "home internet users" should use linux... that certainly gives your argument lots of credibility. I'm trying to envision my grandmother trying to use linux... LOL.

Yes it is my theme is rather basic you can get the same level of eye candy with little problems. Also there are about a dozen or so shell replacements you could also be using.

Like I said earlier, I don't care to be messing around with all that.

FFS can you just say AERO?

I suppose I should have, in retrospect... I didn't think I'd have to spell it out like I did.

Well, I've got a Core Duo and 2 GB of RAM, and everything's perfectly fast for me. Granted, you may need that to get a good experience, and maybe my computer would be faster on XP, but regardless of performance, I prefer the Vista user experience over XP's any day.

decent FPS doesn't cut it for competitive gaming again for me,
For me, I don't really care about "competitive" gaming - as long as it looks decent, I'm good.

Vista is crap this is coming from someone who has used it longer than you since the early betas and release candidates. People aren't lying Vista simply IS NOT worth it until at least SP1 is released.
Well that's your opinion, and obviously I've got mine. Agree to disagree?

It isn't a no brainier XP is still a more stable better supported OS.
I haven't crashed once. *shrug*

Total noobs can use Vista I don't care about those people they are idiots and should do as they wish. Smart folks will avoid Vista for the reasons I've listed.
I've been using, building, and programming computers long enough to not have use the word "noob" in an argument to get my point across. *shrug, again*

Not to mention the new pain in the arse license system that totally put my work place off.
Got mine off an MSDN subscription...

I addressed this at the beginning of my post, and I wasn't talking about home internet users anyways, I was talking about me.

Why is that so hard to imagine? It's nigh the same thing. Want to watch a movie? Put the disc in and click go. Word process? Open OO or use crossover office. Use the internet? Open firefox. Ubuntu isn't somehow harder to use than XP for a begginer, everything is there and ready to go if setup properly like XP machines made by say Dell are sold.

If you have then you'd agree there are total noobs and it's a perfectly acceptable term to be using over the internet, this is not a face to face discussion.

I addressed this at the beginning of my post, and I wasn't talking about home internet users anyways, I was talking about me.

I mentioned I wasn't trying to ween you off Vista. You praised vista and recommended others use it that's my problem. Now I'm going to bed so I'll reply to anything you have to add in the morning.

You've obviously never had to deal with users before...

No.

Based off my experience using Vista heavily, yes, I do recommend upgrading. Of course, you'll need a system that can handle it - the OP, for example, should never be running Vista on his system. But if you've got a decent dual core processor and a decent amount of RAM, I wouldn't let the naysayers stop you.
