hi all could some1 tell me how i would go out about putting groves into the mag on this model, thx

use the "cut" tool to make polys where you want the grouves, then select them and negativly extrude them.

that'll create overlapping faces.

What you want to do is cut all around the mag where the groove will be then cut along the bottom. Delete the necessary faces, then create the groove faces.

I generally don't add things like that after I model the shape. I usually model the grooves by hand as I go so I have more control over the polygon usage and cleanliness of the mesh. However, either of the two above suggestions will get the job done, but leave a lot of cleaning up to do in the end.

you can also create the grooves from the start by usning splines (this s the only part of a weapon where spline modeling is useful) draw the shape from the top down. Of course why bother making the grooves when the can be skinned in later? Especially since it looks like an M4/M16 mag which will be so far away from your perspective that you won't notice it.

yes it is a m4a1 model m8 i was thinking last night about wat u said about it not really making alot of differnce as it could just be added in the skin.

My technique for such things when I need it is to do boolean operations. Though its best for simple shapes (or really complex with extreme polycounts) that you can easily rebuild the faces on if neccesary.

hmm booleans usually create highly irregular and messy meshes

alot of ppl seem to be goin on about 'boolean' i will have to find a tut for it :D

ok my previous idea wont work but there is an easy way to do this
first delete the mag and make a shape like this
fig1.jpg

which can be done by moving the vertexes(vertices whtever) in a plane or a box or even by making it out of a line and extruding a little then either you go ahead and extrude>move
or draw a line resembling the path that u want the extrude to follow and do a "extrude along spline"

or use a bump/normal maps to handle the grooves

ye he could just us normal maps for the intrude. but he could just create 2 small squares and use the handy tool for sort of making a hollow space. Dunno what the tool is called but its in the midifiers. The icon is sort of a block with 4 holes in it where circles have intruded into it.

BOOLEAN ?
lol NO BOOLEANS BOOLEANS ARE BAD STAY AWAY FROM THE BOOLEANS.
lets not even begin to talk about bump and normal mapping on guns i dont think any mod should try to nomral map a gun its just a huge waste of time.

Boolean operations are just fine as long as they are used properly and the time is taken to clean up and fix the mesh afterwards. I do not endorse booleans, however, but they aren't always bad and some situations call for them.

booleans are esy to do wrong and extremely difficult to do right. The problem is they usually create a lot of extra faces that make the mesh ugly and problomatic for skinning later. basically if your not sure how to make cut a shape out a mesh with "CUT" then you would not be able to properly fix the mesh after the boolean anyway.
