New Concept Art

Mind you, they could be useing a method i have seen before.

The level designers make a level with the polygons and models etc.
Then they hand it over to the art department who then take a screan shot or two and paint on top of the bare models in 2d so they can see what direction they want to scene to go. Only then do they start texturing the individual components.

I believe this COULD be the case. :)

hey, maybe they just painted over the imfamous orange map mode. :)

BTW - the machinery image is a screenshot, not concept art.
Hey everyone! Spot whos boll*cking!
That's concept art, that's not fuzzy because it's scanned. The very same picture was in PCGamer UK (In fact that simply looks as if the entire article has been translated into Russian because the captions are exactly the same) and that is how it looked. Concept art.
But bloody cool, intriguing concept art at that.
And yeah it's quite clearly the center of the Combine Citadel. I can't wait for those levels...

Dagobert, sorry if someone mentioned the exact same thing.

EDIT:
The second pic of that level, where the caption mentions dancing dust doesn't look quite as ordered or mechanical as one might expect from the Combine. Looks a bit ramshackle. why would the Citadel have a glass roof. Or a marble tiled floor (check it out)? A church might.
Father Gregori, anyone?

Ok, I accept that now I'm the one bollocking... But och well. Wild unfounded speculation can be fun. It's what built the British media, after all.

I read about the dust thing before... interesting

thankz 4 teh tranzlation

heheh, our media makes me laugh. And cry. (nearly)

Anyway, I cant wait to play this game. It is so gona kik serious ass!

Read my earlier post. It could be a combination. It could be just concept art.

But i do NOT think that it is just a screen shot!

I think everyone can agree that it's not a straight-out screenshot. That's obvious, but it's very possible that it's a screenshot taken of geometry that's been used as the basis of a piece of concept art - they've just drawn over it and detailed it up to try out what they might want it to look like. It's also possible that it's just straight concept art, but there's no way you can positively say one way or another without opening yourself to the possibility of being wrong.

Thats very possible......but i was referring to people thinking was an ingame screenie that got fuzzed by a scanner or something.

Thats just rediculous.

I told you so.

Now your getting all the credit. :p

aww well.

I have to go now. Cya all later!

You guys are gonna look silly when you come across that structure when you play the game, and it looks identical.

Excuse me for haveing a opinion.

I do not believe its a fully finished screen shot. I make maps. I know abit about textureing and I model. And i say its either pure concept art or the finished geometry painted over in a paint program.

I honesting do not think that its possible that its what you say it is.

EDIT: I aint saying it isnt from the game

and it could be what you say it is. Email valve if you want. But to be honest it doesent bother me enough to make me take up gabes time.

Hmmm. Just because it's concept art doesn't mean it's not gonna be in the game. It may very well look "identical" in terms of layout because that's what concept art is all about, but I seriously doubt it'll look "identical" unless Valve surprise us all by re-inventing HL2 as a cross between attempted-photorealistic graphics and fun cel-shaded graphics... Seriously dude, there's very few bits in that picture that suggest it's real honest-to-God in-game.

That wouldn't prove much; of course the structure will be similar but the *way* it is rendered will be different.
I can't for the life of me see how the game will be able to display the dreamy, almost unearthly lighting in this picture - would be mind-blowing if it could though.

I think the suggestion that this is a heavily 'doctored' screenshot looks very plausible.

If you look at it in the none maximised view. ie On 1024 desktop like mine it looks almost rendered. However once you tell it to go to its orriginal size it looks more like concept art to me.

maybe thats what hes doing

And if its a screen shot. How did the camera get up there. And where is gordans gun or crowbar or his health display etc.

maybe i am just grabing at things to try and bk up my arguement, but still.......

judging from the little bit of the game weve seen.

Something that looks "identical" to that is not possible. That is art..nothing more nothing less.

we migt see an area of the game that looks very simliar to that....but i have never seen a 3d engine capable of rendering something like that in real time.......and if it did i would probly get sick of looking at it.

You are seroiusly an idiot if you think that is an in game screenshot.

get off the shrooms.

edit: i think that picture of the robot is ingame. you will all look stupid when im right.

I put a more subtle arguement that that. But yeah. Personaly I think hes being rather silly himself. Not for holding a certain opinion, but for calling us silly cos we hold a certain opinion too. Its not the way to win an discussion my friend

It hardly matters, actually. Whatever it is or isn't, it's gonna be one hell of a sight in-game...

Well that's not really a valid argument. A camera can be placed in a map wherever the developers want it to be. It's as easy as inputting an XYZ coördinate to tell where it is and a vector (also an XYZ coördinate) to tell which way it is looking. The HUD and gun model can be turned off very easily. To me it's clear that it is either drawn from scratch or a painted over screenshot. So I'm saying you're right, but not because it's not possible to take a screenshot from that position.

I know, which is why i was saying that i was getting desperate for new reasons, lol.
