New Doom III preview at PC IGN

Hrm, interesting that the author of the article was Steve Butts. Maybe just because it's hilarious to wonder what his everyday life would be...

I think we still have a quite a while to determine the proper requirements, as Pentium 5 is due out later this year/Q1 04. Pentium 4 EE looks temping, though (Extreme Edition).

The DM owns hard, we already know this because the quakecon demo was so fabulous... Blasting someone back through a window with the lights flashing around really does have to be seen to be believed.

Unfortunately you can't really get an impression of just how awesome the game looks from static screens because 80% of the magic is the moving realistic and immersive environment/shadows.

I think HL2 is going to be the nuts, but I also think D3 is going to be as good and technically even more so.

We're lucky lucky gamers.

That is what NVIDIA wanted you to see. It had something to do with the specific Catalyst version being used in the benchmark. All other Catalysts worked fine but obviously they are going to show the one Catalyst version that was getting 1 FPS. Don't expect truth on teh intarweb.

Ya but HL2 nvidia benchmarking was done with their old drivers...... and the benchmarks from the alpha version was b4 ATi made a big enough $ offer to Id (just like HL2 :D ).

Yes, I saw those too, but if you have read the latest statement of John Carmack he said ATI cards are going to outperform NVIDIA when it comes to high precision rendering. And that was the latest info, the benchmarks with the Alpha version don't count anymore as they didn't include the standard renderer.

That's not strictly true. The standard ARB2 path if used for both cards shows the Ati significantly faster, if you do what most people will do and run the nVidia cards under their own code path (which JC has coded) you get the FX5900 outperforming the 9800. There's a minor tradeoff in terms of visual & technical accuracy/'correctness' but it's hardly enough to notice.

Bottom line - both card perform more than adequately. At least better than my TNT did when Q3 was first out. :)

This is from last week, this will clear up a few things and those who think NVIDIA owns ATI should reconsider (As you can see games need to be specially coded to run well on Fx cards):

Question: In your opinion, are these results representative for future DX9 games (including Doom III) or is it just a special case of HL2 code preferring ATI features, as NVIDIA suggests?

John's answer: Unfortunately, it will probably be representative of most DX9 games. Doom has a custom back end that uses the lower precisions on the GF-FX, but when you run it with standard fragment programs just like ATI, it is a lot slower. The precision doesn't really matter to Doom, but that won't be a reasonable option in future games designed around DX9 level hardware as a minimum spec.

John Carmack

It looks like NVIDIA has lost a lot of ground, I was considering to buy a GeforceFX but now I am heading for a 9800pro, cheaper and faster (sounds like a big deal).

It wasn't done with old drivers. It was done with their latest public drivers. Valve has a policy that it only counts if real people can actually use them.

In the case of both games we will see performance improvements as driver improves. But in the case of NVIDA, don't count on seeing a 40% increase. Their problem ultimately lies in hardware, not drivers.

Yeah, NVidia is completely f ucked.

There .50 detonator drivers are shit. They desperately argue against logic and obvious benchmarks.

Their FX line is FUBAR, its time to admit defeat and move on for them.

Mmmm... Doom 3 looks better with every preview :afro:

thats cool spitcod, i regularly check on ign.. :) doom3 will be tight..

If you guys haven't got your copy yet, PC Gamer includes a MASSIVE preview of things to come with Doom 3.

I will have to admit, it does look pretty. But only time will tell how well it stands up against HL2, considering it only has 4 person multiplay.

The only reason HL is still alive today is because of the massive support from the modding community. I have yet to hear how moddable Doom 3 will be.

from what ive heard the alpha came with some of the modding tools that are going to be included in the final release and theyve already moded the hell of the game. i guess its supposed to be real easy to mod and very user friendly

Well, I think Doom3 and HL2 are pretty different games. Yeah, both are FPS but still... I don't think they will compete aginst each other. Each of them will be cool in its own, unique ways.

my reasoning for Doom3 being pushed back

it could have been rushed out this year and competed with HL2 and done ok, but they decided to wait until the HL2 craze was over and work on it until then so it would be better

not far fetched

tool doing the soundtrack is best news i hard all week they rock!

nothing but he was the scary sould fx man and has left doom 3 now to make a new albam and tool is the best band in the world

tool is doing ONE song for doom3.

people around here have a habit of reading something and then totally disregarding what it Really says and making it into what they Want it to say...

Exactly. Whoever will do the soundtrack for Doom3 must do a soundtrack similiar to Quake1, that means some atmospheric ambient sounds, because thats how Id wants it to be. And thats the best way I think!

i dont think tool would ingame soundtrack for doom 3 it would an intro or credits song so it would not need atmospheric ambient sounds

your link is not in the work

trent reznor is no longer on the project....that ruins a lot of the experience, that would have been ****ing awesome music

It's funny, for all the amazing technology Doom 3 uses, the finger of the character model on the trigger of the weapons is still really blocky...

http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMedia...url=http://pc.ign.com/objects/014/014934.html

That is because every model in the game uses a much lower number of polygons than say Half-Life 2.

However the objects look like they have many polygons (though their outer "borders" will not be smooth curves), because of heavy normal mapping.

The reason they went with lower polygons is because the lower the polygon count, the faster the full-dynamically lit engine will work.

This will all eventually go away as hardware progresses onwards.

The shadow on the trite(spiderthing) doesn't look right- the head should be casting a shadow on front leg on the right. In fact, I don't see any apparent self-shadowing at all, only gouraud shadows (places not facing light is dark).
I think for the sake of performance they're cutting back on more pointless features, or it's a small bug. The art also reminded me of really high quality unreal2 .

It's impressive, but it's not really exciting me like other games where the graphics first made me want the game (when I first saw Grim Fandango). Personally, I think the delay for Doom3 was more a content thing- they want to add more physics and stuff into the SP.

Maybe he has a higher plan...

When the VALVe boys visit the HL2 community forums and see a DOOM III thread dominating the forums maybe they will feel compelled to throw us a freaking BONE here!!! hehe

Not likley but sounds good :D
