New Fallout 3 gameplay vids

*watches*

- I hate Howard's voice. The Vault exit is pretty impressive, though has little in common with the previous titles. May be the nature of the East Coast early Vaults, though.

- Music is vaguely Falloutish, propably because it emulates the Modoc music track. Landscape is pretty generic - if I didn't knew it's from Fallout 3, I wouldn't guess it's supposed to be Fallout.

- Ugh. Somebody should mod out that idiotic cash register sound when earning XP.

- WTF? Trumpets and a full orchestral score when earning a level? Stupid.

- Oh yeah, wooden structures can survive 200 years. Uhum.

- The 10mm Pistol looks vaguely like it's older brother. Colt made semiautomatics too, without the cylinder. But wait, what's that? An immobile weapon hammer in a next-gen immersive game? Awww.... how cute they pay attention to details.

- Typical moronity: fusion-based cars can explode, TWO HUNDRED years after being abandoned...

- Stiff animation of the lead character.

- Since when do unexploded bombs create craters? Oh wait, let me guess... Bethesda rewrote the laws of physics. What kind of a moron greenlighted this design idea?

- The Metro Protectron is a nice nod to Robby the Robot. Wait, did Beth put in something subtle?

- Interesting design for Megaton's gate. Like it.

- What's with the needless profanities?

- Wow, the character design is pretty impressive for Bethesda. Finally the NPCs look human and the equipment is properly worn. Gob's raspy... man, can this actually be something good?

- ...Burke. Forget everything I said.

- No shadows? I thought this is supposed to be a next-gen game.

- What's with the bullet time, err, VATS? Why is it a superpower instead of, you know, something that offers actual tactics?

- Giant mutated crabmen. Fits the 50s pulp sci-fi but... god, do they look hilarious.

- OH LOOK MOAR EXPLODING 200 YEAR OLD CARS OH LOLZ

- Look at the ingenious Radiant AI and the magnificent animation! Standing in one place with a rake up his ass!

- Why did his leg go off if the scorpion hit him in the chest (Scorpion looks great, though).

- Did he get Combat Armour after 15 minutes of play? Art of balance is unknown to Bethesda seemingly.

- Power Fist doesn't look even remotely like it's older brother. Whee, lack of continuity?

- Bleh, boring death animations.

- Uhum, backflip. Where are the game's great physics?

- Tenpenny Towers look impressive.

- WTF? StealthBoy wasn't a PIP-Boy plug-in, it was a military cloaking device.

- Looks good inside. The bloom is killing me, though.

- Meh, kind of stupid that the quest is so straightforward. Would be more interesting (not to mention, unconventional) to have Burke trick the player into installing the charge and meeting him at TP Towers. But I guess such subtlety is beyond Bethesda.

Overall, the impression is rather good. It's a well done Fallout-inspired shooter, though definitely not a worthy RPG sequel.

*watches Grizzly watch*

Just finished watching part 4. Still unimpressed with everything so far, much like the E3 presentation. Looks more and more like Oblivion with guns. Gameworld/engine is ugly and A.I still seems retarded. Character animation in dialogue is still pants.

I like the licensed music however.

Well consider my mind blown. I wasn't too excited before but now I can't wait to pick this up. Not too pleased they kept Oblivion's face-on dialogue, but I put up with it before so I can put up with it now.

The whole Megaton part... is that really going to be a crucial part of the game, or something that isn't just some side-quest? Because y'know, I'm against the whole prospect of blowing up some town for a bit of cash that some oil-barren wannabe offers me. I like towns in games like this. :(

On the whole, I'm so-so. I enjoyed Oblivion, flawed as it was, and I do like wastelands and the post-apocalytpic theme quite a lot. However, alot of stuff looks very clunky and pretty uninspired, but I think I'll get my monies worth just pretending to be Mad Max, then I'll put it down.

Bah bah bah, complain, complain. Haven't played game but thinks I know better, bah bah bah.

Thank you for your insightful contribution to the thread.

Burke sounds quite a bit like Lucien Lachance, maybe it's just my imagination.

The voice acting is as lame as Oblivions, and the third person view is a joke. I wish it wasn't over the shoulder.

Can't say I'm too impressed. It just looks so...bland and dated, and I don't just mean visually. I'm pretty sure the guy who voiced the guy in the suit is the same guy who did the guards in Oblivion.

I enjoyed Oblivion when it came out, but with hindsight it's got so many flaws it's unbelievable. I picked it up on the cheap for the 360 a few months back, and I was literally laughing out loud at the stupid shit that was happening. If it wasn't the hilarious voice-acting and animations, I'd have to put up enemies getting stuck in rocks, or guards approaching me as I sneak around their barracks stealing shit from their commander only to say "Good day, citizen!". Then the guard sits down to eat, which apparently causes an explosion - as everything on table goes flying everywhere, showering the room with dinnerware and food. Then there's probably the bigger issue of the game basically consisting of following the red compass marker from start to finish.

It just looks to me like this game is just building on Oblivion, when I really think a lot of stuff like the AI and animation should be totally reworked from the ground up - it's clearly shite.

The voice acting is as lame as Oblivion's.
Agreed. I think the reason that the profanities seem unnecessary is because they clearly sound like they're being delivered by people who never swear, and thus compensate by overemphasizing the rude parts. The vids had generally useless voice acting throughout, very disappointing.

My other impressions:
Stiff animations are stiff, still, which is painfully obvious during conversations but also apparent during battles and 3rd person. I can look forward to this kind of stuff breaking my immersion all over the place.

It's hard to articulate why F3 seems to be uninspired on the whole... There's just nothing that makes me burst out and say 'oooh, that's clever...!', apart from maybe the look of the post-nuclear landscape. On the other hand there's plenty of stuff that makes me instinctively mutter 'that's dumb...', like the exploding cars (I mean really...), or the fact that the dialogue and quest structure have fallen into the classic trap of allowing you to only be a saint, a baby rapist, or a moneygrubbing hybrid of same.

Like Oblivion, I feel this is going to be a game where the non-human elements of the game world are jawdroppingly atmospheric and convincing, but that it's going to fall well short in any area that involves character interaction. The hope is fading fast that I'll get my money's worth out of the time it takes from the point I start playing to the point where I discover I've experienced all the depth that F3 has to offer.

The conversation animations still aren't upto VTM:B standard, but they are better than Oblivions. I'm not reading too much into the trailers though because compared to how I play games, the guys just skimming the surface to show off the games features. I'd of talked to everyone I met until they had nothing left to say, and explored every nook and cranny going in megaton for example, and likewise at the tenpenny tower. I also think the character was probably hacked as the one at E3 was with various high skills, armour and equipment, so I wouldn't read too much into it about him having combat armour early on tbh.

Bah bah bah, complain, complain. Haven't played game but thinks I know better, bah bah bah.

So, do I have to try anal sex before I can dislike that as well????

Anyways, some beautiful parts where the vault door opens and Megaton but sooo much retardation that was pointed out long ago. Looks like a mediocre FPS with RPG elements, I guess we'll see if/when Fallout 4 comes around if we finally get a Fallout sequel.

*Shakes magic 8-ball*

Outlook not so good.

Well sticking a finger up your ass usually helps to know if you like anal sex silly, everyone knows that ^___^

Looks ok, I guess... something new to play at least.

But in Oblivion the realistic forested landscape was the only real practical advantage of this engine, now there isn't even that. It's the same shadowless, mouse brained, thunderbird populated, cliched, pointless waste of giant space to roam around in. The same old flaws, same old limitations.

edit - holy crap, and the same voice actors - I heard three in the tenpenny tower vid alone.

No doubt Bethesda will be patting themselves on the back and showing off all the 'awards' it has won for a year after release. Again.

I like the fact that you have a choice of perspectives

I will be using the over-the-shoulder perspective quite a lot

Its a shame characters are still quite wooden. Even the sheriff felt none threatening

Holy crap.

Mister Burke is an Imperial.

I was about to say...!

That was the biggest flaw that popped out in these videos. Also the fact I noticed especially at the end was the lack of facial acting, which really doesn't surprise me seeing as Oblivion was the same in that regard. Some people may say the voice acting is bad, but that's not what bothers me the most.

Things I loved:

- VATS (could get old after a while I suppose, but we'll see)
- Guns (for some reason they charm me, I don't know why)
- Power Glove (DID YOU SEE HIM PUNCH THAT GUY'S HEAD OFF?! :D )
- Drab colors (I'm not one of the people that can't stand games without color. I like a bit of drab every once in a while.)

the mere fact that it's a postapocalyptic fps with rpg elements means I'm buying it, and those videos looked great IMO

Looks great, it doesn't capture the real spirit of the previous games but overall this looks like a solid sci-fi RPG singleplayer game regardless of franchise or license, and there aren't enough of those out there.

The videos look good. Kind of spoiled the beginning for me. I don't see how you can complain that much. I for one loved Oblivion and didn't see any major flaws with it.

And here I was thinking that you felt the exact opposite from reading your previous comments :p

+++ To the atmosphere
--- For the hud telling me I'm in danger
+ To the stealth effects
+++++ To the planting of a live grenade via pickpoketing :D

The conversation animations still aren't upto VTM:B standard, but they are better than Oblivions.

Anything not up to VTM:B standards is epic fail!

Seriously though we need moar Troika.

Damnit, I was hoping for something good with the VAing Bethesda. SOMETHING GOOD WITH THE VAing. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT YOU LEARNED YOUR GODDAMNED LESSON.

Sigh.

Whatever, still buying it.

Hate the hud, love the atmosphere/environment, hate the combat

Actually, the "beginning" half-hour of the game is supposed to be you growing up. You see yourself cycle through all the things you would pick at the beginning of an RPG - your stats, your race, the way you look - etc, albeit told through your eyes a child in the game.

I'm certainly going to make a Blade character.

Except he's going tp be heavily armored.

The stiff arms whilst talking to people is oh so annoying. I'm guessing Beth employees haven't heard of body langauge which makes up for a larger percentage of communication than voice does. HL2 set a benchmark and games made years after still can't match it, sad.

What did you expect from a bunch of industry n00bs?

It's kind of sad that people are going to buy it regardless of the flaws... at least wait a month or two, so that the first month is a crash, and Howard/Hines gets chastised by ZeniMax.

EDIT: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44621

Wonder who was hired to do this booklet, since it sure as hell can't be Beth's work.

Ha, if people can't see the forest for the trees it'll be their loss. :p

Wonder if it is possible to still target and shoot off bodyparts without VATS, just using ironsights... would be very patronising of Bethesda to assume I can't headshot without pausing the game to think about it first.

There are no iron sights in the game.

And Kage, the problem is, ZeniMax doesn't care about quality, they only care about cash. The only way to get Howard sacked or at least reprimanded is not to buy FO3, or at least delay buying it, so that the first month or two will show very low sales.

Watching these videos has nearly killed my interest in the game. Everything looks so lifeless. It's like the entire game is stricken with Rigor Mortis.

What did you expect from a bunch of industry n00bs?

I expected them to learn a thing or two about basic npc interactions. As for Howard I'm not even sure what it is that he does but stop putting him on the PR vids. His voice is annoying.

I wanted to like FO3, I really, really did. But it just seems, well, non-interesting. I'm not really an FO fan (I have played and enjoyed the first two, so...) but still, it seems a waste.
