Hi i am a modeler and i have made some vietnam style shacks and i was wondering how do i get them into the editor to be able to place into a map i am making for half life 2 DM .

Best to wait until a mod moves this to the modeling section. Most mappers don't know how where to put all the right files for a custom model (including myself, for HLDM).

Models into the "models" folder of the game than use prop_static and load your model in.
Make sure you've put the model in the right directory so when you startup your sdk with HL2DM, put the models in "Steam\steamapps\%username%\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\models\"

Have fun :)

This is the right section, this section is for mappers modellers only make the models do animations, textures and some extra things with it.

Modellers should know how to import a model to Source to see how it looks in-game, so I beg to differ.

Mappers simply use the models as resources, they don't (as a basic requirement) need to know what files are needed for a model, where they all need to be put, etc. because there is already a lot of stuff already in the right places for them to use.

You've said where you need to put the model, but you haven't said what file format the model needs to be in, what other supporting files are needed, etc.. If he's saved the model in a certain format it may not be readable in Source until he converts it to a different format (MDL iirc). This is why I said a Source modeller would be better suited to answering the question, and you'll find more of them in the Modeling section.

Even as mapper you must do alot with models, like characters npc's you gotta set his waypoints, order them to do sequences (animations), load scripts and we can go on...

True True but he didn't asked this if he's really a modeller he should know this.
I won't give information that people already know..

Even when your a mapper that doesn't mean you may not know where and what files you need.
He asked how to put his shack into his map and thats what I told him.

Thanks for all the info guys .I appreciate it allot .But i have 2 more questions for you .

For buildings or non animated files like crates and stuff the files have to be .smd correct.Or .vmf.

He's a modeler, doesn't make him a Source expert. ;)

yeah fusedgore just makes models using AC3D i believe thats the program. He is trying to make models for me so I can use them to put in my mod that i've just begin to develop. I am relatively new in terms of game programming and feel this is a good way to get familiar with things. I am a software developer so I do have coding background, so its not purely from scratch lol.

also what is AC3D? I've never heard of that

AC3D is a modeling program like max or lightwave .I am a modeler and yes i know how modeling works .Though i dont know how the Valve engine works cause i never worked with it or with the Hammer editor .So back up a a little Tyron and give me a break .

well you'll need SMD export support or else you'll have to use some type of intermidiary program to translate the file

please check that link I put up, it should guide you through the entire process from SMD to MDL to in game

wow wow don't harash on me.. you didnt told us this was your first time building an model for the source engine... next time be more precisely what kind of "modeler" you are.
and btw i'm not here to tease people i'm here to help so give us some good information (Cause when someone comes on a forum and sais "Hi i'm a modeler!" i think he knows all the basics of that game, which the forums redirect to. so more somethings like "Heya i'm a modeler only this is my first time modeling for this engine" then we all know how to help you ^^)

So now I know where to start with ya. Follow Shinobi's link and try to sort it out.
When you get stuck come and ask we (well i do) are pleased to help you :)

I know i need to export from the modeling program to smd ,but is it better to go from 3ds max to smd format or use the xsi mod tool.I only ask that cause i heard somewhere that if you use max the model can get be messed up meaning not shaped correctly once you import or compile.

o and Tyron i apologize .This is just my first time using the hammer .If you want to see the models i am going to use check this link. They are pictures of models not textured models.

Thanks Shinobi that link is working well for me.

wow this is some nice work :o
i'm currently working on a spec op i'm taking my time for it so it wont be done in 1 day and i still have alot to do :P

here you can check it: http://blog.tyronix.com

one's 1 completed this 1 i will make some others of it and then some citizens + my head characters. for the mod that i'm planning to make. got 1 cool idea still searching people for it.
Like modellers, scripters, mappers, Voice Actors, People who make my story more detailed (like for the maps) and more but i wont rush into this cause not everyone is enough motivated to make this mod that can take a while..

so in the mean time i'll help people here and maybe i find some who i'd like to recruit for my project till then i'll stay doing it all :P

But i like your shacks ^^ i can help you further with your models to get it compiled and working if you want you can add me on steam just pm me and i'll give it ya

Tyron that dude looks cool man .Did you do him in max .Below is a link to a space helicopter i was working on for ut3 but stopped work on it cause well I was totaly not into Epic Games anymore.
