New Rage details!

I suppose it moves in phases, there was a time when WWII shooters were very popular.

Exactly. Right now, post-apocalyptic is all the rage. It will probably remain that way until after 2012.

It doesn't bother me, I skipped over Fallout3 and the Stalker series, so this will be my first experience in this theme.

Err, I don't see how Post-Apocalyptic is all the rage, Modern War 2 still seems to have far more popularity than either RAGE or Borderlands, when it comes to unreleased shooters.

Also, VirusType2, we all know you're an id fanboy, it's okay though, we still wub you.:)

I've been hearing people complaining about things like "does every game have to have a nuke and be post apocalyptic" for a couple of years. (probably Modern War 2, but I wasn't paying attention)

Fanboys lie to support their choices, and exhibit blind ignorance. I just happen to have liked Wolfenstien3D and the Doom series. Even though I was disappointed in Doom3, it was fun to mod it at least.

Modern Warfare 2 isn't post-apocalyptic, it's a sequel to Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, for some reason, here anyway, they've named it simply Modern Warfare 2.

I think IW is trying to break away from the COD name with it.

Last year, id Software generated some... rage for the shooter/racer hybrid Rage when the issue of the Xbox 360 version being gimped due to the lack of disk space cropped up. id has since clarified that the decision to split Rage's 360 version over two discs hasn't gimped it in any way.

But why only two? They would have been able to fit in more textures if they went with three DVDs, right? Perhaps, but id co-founder John Carmack says that the nature of the game doesn't allow for it to be spread across three DVDs.

We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just…we can’t cut it into a third like that. We can cut it into two pieces. We’ve got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn’t make an arbitrary cut.

Although the two large wastelands featured in Rage requires a two-disc split, Doom 4, on the other hand, will not have the same restrictions.

Doom 4 is being set up so that it’s almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they’ve got the ability because of the way it’s structured.

Rage is currently scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 next year. No target launch has yet been announced for Doom 4.

They should just release it for PC only. I can see why this game was pushed back so many times.

I wonder if the PC version will support GWFL for achievements, if so I'll get that one.

Otherwise I just might get the PS3 version.

Um it's not called MW2 it's called COD:MW2

Are you guys joking?

Those boxes are probably older, because they have "RP" and the other one has "M". For a while there was no "Call of Duty" in the name, but I think they realized that the CoD name will inevitably sell at least 5 million copies of whatever they attach it to these days.

yeah... the world and style looks pretty identical to fallout 3. What was it they say in the trailer? " But the automic war was not the end as people predicted." Remind you of something :-P. If it's a good game i'll get it, but I can't help but notice it looks like a fallout 3 copy.

Automic? What's an automic war?

Also, Fallout 3 is a copy of Fallout 1 and 2 + Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so what's your point?

It seems there are no original ideas anymore. Few and far between anyway. It's the information age. Everything is influenced by something.

Like, every combination of music notes has probably been in some song somewhere, but it's the overall arrangement that makes it completely different.

It's the perfect arrangement that people strive for today, and new ideas are absorbed by every rival. An important new game technology or idea shows up and it's now part of the standard. The bar just gets raised.

Anyway, even in the 1980's there were blatant clones, copies and rip offs. Things aren't even that bad anymore. So, get over it.

Yet Rage was in development long before Fallout 3 was even announced...

Id didn't copy your precious Fallout.

I think Rage looks much more interesting than Fallout, and I really dig the art direction TBH.

I hope it's good, but I am skeptical because I'm not crazy about I.D. and hoping for something that deviates in gameplay and story is probably asking for a lot when you look at their other games.

But I like everything so far, I'm glad it takes place in a deserted area, but doesn't have the awful grey-scale of Fallout or GOW (Yeah, Rage has a brown-scale, but it's much more varied.)
Had no idea it was coming out so late though, thought it was set for October or something.

I also love these sand-people lookin' guys

id software can compile the game code, and have it ready for 4 different systems overnight: PC, PS3, 360, Mac

How genius that is, particularly for a company that licenses game engine technology. So you can build a game and with very little modification, sell it for 4 systems.

And now I'm hearing iPhone 3GS as well, though this would require more specialized assets obviously.
The developer also said he believes Rage engine, id Tech 5, will run on the iPhone 3GS.

Get the **** outta here. No way that runs on an iPhone.

Maybe you don't understand. Carmack said he believes Tech5 will run on iPhone 3GS. That does not mean it will run the full graphics capability.... even the consoles can't do that!

the assets are the models, textures, sounds and other resources, by the way.

As Willits explained things, in the near future it's learned that a comet will smash into the Earth and destroy all life. An ark system is set up so people can take refuge below ground and emerge when it's safe, and when they come back to the surface, they discover not all life was wiped out. The player is then tasked with figuring out exactly what is going on in this unexpected, generally lawless society.
Sounds awesome.

Here's the source article that goes into greater detail.

Also, "Award-winning British author Graham Joyce has been hired to pen the story for the next installment in the DOOM series."
