I just started modeling and I am very interested in learning how to do some of the things you guys do on here.... I am using Rhinoceros and am just going through the tutorial right now, but do you have any other recommendations on where I can learn some more things? This modeling stuff looks really sweet and I want to get into it! Also... I couldn't attach a picture here because the size was too big... How do I make it so I can post my first modeling creation on here?

Hmm I'd suggest you get Maya PLE, XSI exp, or gMax, and work on those, my personal favorite is XSI, though I still miss Maya's normal editing tools, I'm afraid I can't comment much on gMax I dislike it's layout and interface, and so I've never really learned it as well as either Maya or XSI. XSI is Valves choice and will come free with the package, the other applications will not, though I would guess there will be gMax support. Anyway here are the three sites:

gMax: http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/
Maya PLE: http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml
XSI exp: http://www.softimage.com/products/exp/v3/

They all come with some tutorials to get you started, and all of them require you to register with them, to get to the applications. To post larger images here host them yourself and give us a URL.

where can i host them? also is rhinoceros any good at all? i have started learning it and i dont want to get confused in another program...

3ds max is the most n00b friendly IMO, i can make basic stuff, and i have nly been using it for about 5 days ?

where can i host my pics so you guys can see them and is rhinoceros still an alright program? say i make a model of a gun... then what... what exactly can i do with the models i make? have pictures of them?

well merc, they are to be used in mods... :)
but if you have made a model, then it needs animating and stuff like that ;)

I take advantage of Freeserves, web sapce thingy, just sign up to a no ties account, you don't have to acctually use the account, (remember to reactivate it now and again) (i must have like 5 dif accounts on there :x )...

I use 3DsMax for my modelling,
I've never really heard of anyone using Rhinoceros for game modeling... And i really don't particularly like the program, but hey its all a matter of opinion and taste really..oh and if there are plugins to export to useable formats :p

If you need to send me the images and i'll post them on one of my freeserve accounts for you.....or i'll set you up one....:cheese:

what is the freeserve website?

Yeah if you a guilt free about stealing software then Max is a fine program to learn. Otherwise it costs somewhere around $4k, or only $700 for students. gMax is the light version of it, and is free.

where can you get these programs for free???

EDIT: Also, I need to turn the files to JPEG and they are BMP right now.... I have Adobe Photoshop but I do not know how to change the type... Please help?

yeah, 3dsmax is the best 3d modelling tool I have seen so far. I used lightwave, but thats more a animation program than a good modeler.

personally I would use XSI:EXP since it is free, and it is also what the boys at Valve are using.

I just downloaded it, but I don't see any advantage above 3dsmax, I think it is the inferior programm to model.
