new Windows in a year or so

I'd be content if all of the currently "Vista only" stuff is given support on this new one also. Course I suppose most people would want XP support, but that's not happening.

I knew this would happen. Vista is a transition OS, like ME or 2000

hell yah, thats exactly what I said when Vista came out and well...

I still have every reason to stick with XP pro. I really doubt this new OS will be something I will want to use.

It's hard to believe it will be like 2011 when it comes out! I can't believe I'm from the future

No, no no no no no no.

This quote has been horribly twisted beyond belief. People are for starters assuming it means Win7. It may not be.

For starters, each Windows client takes a minimum of a year of semi-public beta's before they RTM. They are maybe at an alpha stage.

The only two options for this is that it could possibly be are a Windows 7 early beta, or Windows Vista SP2.

Microsoft is still sticking to the 2010 release window for Windows 7.

currently 2008
2008 + "year or so" easily includes 2010http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7#Milestone_1

See, that's subjective. What's the meaning of "or so"? You seem to think it adds another year. Maybe 3 months is more reasonable window? Or six?

Either way, I'm just trying to say that you shouldn't think "OMG Win7 is out next year!" since that isn't what he was saying. From all of the blogs I read, people seem to think it's RTM'ing next year. That's more than likely not the case. Again, it's all speculation.

We will probably know more at PDC this year.

I wonder what awesome new features we can expect!

Here are some things I want:

1) user custom icon sets. w00t I want super pretty semi-clear folders and the ability to mix and match icon sets.

2) faster startup, shut down

3) user custom thumbnail sizing. I'd like all my image thumbnails so close that they are touching (or touching with borders) so I can fit tons of them on screen at once.

These are things that you can expect:

1) Improved touch support (those Microsoft Surface recognition technologies? Yea, they're going into Win7)

2) More emphasis on "Software as a Service" and cloud computing

3) Even bigger emphasis on Search. Vista included Windows Desktop Search 3.0 (there is recently a 4.0 beta, which is really nice)

Those are three I know for certain are in Win7 builds from either blogs, or mostly from MS employees.

*Edit* Also just check out www.aeroxp.org as they posted five pillars of Windows 7. Those are in no way the only things that are getting changed by any means, but those are some things they are striving to work towards. Most of it is speculation based off the M1 leak that the poster got a hold of.

We really won't know the big selling features until it's officially announced, probably at PDC.

**** that. I will stick with winxp for games and linux for everything else.
