Its better that they dont show much.
Looks very cool...except for that damned little girl :frown: , I hate the way she acts...like an adult or...something. Its creepy :(.

It's some sort of Martian war machine I'm guessing, I just wish we could get a better view of it.

I don't know, it looks pretty generic. I'm sure it'll be fun to watch, but it would have been great to see it done in a subdued, atmospheric sort of way, which is how I always visualised the radio version.
 
It looks like something out of Mechwarrior, you can just see the arm coming down from the top of the screen which looks to be some sort of large cannon.

Have you ever read the book? Huge walking tripods come trotting out of holes burning everything in their paths, the army fights back, gets its ass kicked, people flee and panic, etc.....

Nothin' subdued about it.
 
And this actually looks to be taking as much of a "subdued" path as possible with the story. Tom Cruise doesn't even have a missile launcher, or not even a machine gun. Although that would have been hilarious.

Edit~ To elaborate, what I remember most strongly from the production was the account of the man wandering into the ruins of the city, and eventually finding the derelict machines of the invaders. If I remember right, that version of the story didn't detail much of the actual invasion itself, it only presented information that had been heard from other sources, and the stories of people lost in the aftermath.

I admit I haven't read the book, so obviously my opinion was based more on personal preference than a desire to be faithful to the original story; I probably should have made that clear.
 
I missed the part where they referenced the book? Ah well, its all good, its Steven Speilberg!

Maybe he will do something along the lines of Minority Report, which was a decent movie.

Edit: Just looked at those nice spoilers Shens sent me, and I'm glad-- the movie DOES have some reference to the book! :)

Maybe it's because she's a better actress than most adults.
Usually Spielberg kids are sentimental, puke inducing all american apple pie chewing spoiled brats. Fanning is not the usual spielberg kid though. Maybe she'll rescue the film from his over sentimentality.

As a matter of interest - there is another, true-to-the-book English War of the worlds movie by Pendragon Pictures that was finished months ago.

I'm so hyped about this film...at first I wasn't so sure about it, but now I want to watch it so bad.

Largely because of how little I know about it. Also its Spielberg and the Cruiser...Its just gotta be good. I mean, anyone who stars in the gay porn Navy drive, that was Top Gun, has gotta be a good actor right?

I'm still more interested in the Pendragon movie, looks like they've actually read the book - although most of the stills make the panic and desperation from the book look non-existant, like some lame BBC sunday evening costume drama.

The jeff wayne album was great in the 80's but the martian machine designs look so dated now and totally un-scary. I'd laugh if I saw an egg on legs with big green eyes shouting OOO LA.

Did you know that they're planning to do an animated remake? I think that might be what TDE posted. There is more of those videos, one with a Tripod and another with a flying machine, but I can't seem to find them.
