Next gen DS

Not saying there isn't a Metal Gear Solid 3 on the way for the 3DS. But there hasn't been an announcement that there is.
I understand now. Yeah, this is all we've got:
At E3 2010, Konami announced a game for the Nintendo 3DS entitled Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater - The Naked Sample. No other information about the title was provided.[14] Later on the official E3 Kojima site, a website with screenshots and official art was released.
Yeah, I agree with you. I thought you were saying that they wouldn't be bringing a Metal Gear game to the 3DS.

Of note is that [Kojima] likes to be an early adopter for each new system. (but it seems only if the system originates in Japan)

I do expect it will be MGS 3 because it was very highly regarded, also because the hardware in the 3DS is more than adequate. I think it's a pretty good match.

Anyway, if it is MGS 3, then I think he will try to offer some compelling reason to get it, besides the newfound polish and 3D effects. Maybe some bonus content.

MGS3 foliage is a good enough reason to work in 3D. It just almost seems odd that this isn't a PSP title, considering the Naked Snake MGS games on there already.

This whole time I was thinking this would be dumbed down, but I just realized that the 3DS actually has enough buttons to cover this game: L, R, A, B, X, Y, D-Pad

A couple of shadow bugs, but I expect they can fix that.

Damn that looks good for a portable!

Yeah, it's a good sign of what it's capable of. :)

The 3DS looks like it was designed around Capcom's new arcade system. (not really, but it does good enough) But they really should be working on bringing SSFIV to the PC!

Well personally I suck at Japanese fighters like Street Fighters but I was just impressed by how it looks even when compared to the 360/PS3 etc versions.:p

It even has dynamic self-shadowing and whatnot.

Capcom seems to be all over this nifty little handheld. Here are some screens:

I was thinking ... what would be a great game for the 3DS?

Sim City. Sim... City.

Skyscrapers sticking out of the screen and little cars driving down streets deep into the 4th dimension.

What about you guys? Try to imagine the type of game that would be perfect for 3D, or even more specifically, the 3DS.

Still trying to imagine how they're gonna work games that involve interacting directly with screen elements into this design. Separating the touch function from the 3D seems like kind of an oversight...

It's got a stylus too, but yeah, touchscreen only on the bottom screen. It's not an oversight, it's a limitation they'll have to work around.

I've played like a thousand games and never used touchscreen before. Therefore, I won't miss it. :p

Sim City. Sim... City.

Gets my vote. And when the power station melts down - explosion in the face :)

That's got me thinking - what i'd really like is a faithfail 3DS version of Necromunda. I always liked how vertical the game was and steampunk towers sticking out of a the screen as you rotate the map around and plan your next move would be awesome.

Yeah, pretty much any top down game would probably be perfect. I'd like some turn-based strategy games, like Advance Wars 3DS?

Now with 3D trees and mountain ranges

Advance Wars 3DS
I forgot about the Advance Wars series, but now that I remember, the 3DS will be a huge disappointment unless this game comes out. Artillery strikes would look glorious.

How? Seriously, I'm having trouble imagining how these types of games are going to work on the 3DS without ignoring the 3D screen almost entirely, which is negating it's main selling point, something I can only suspect publishers will be loathe to do. I know I sound like I'm just inventing things to whine about, but this is not some tiny niche of games on the original DS I'm referring to. Just think of any game that used the stylus prominently - were you focused on the top screen? Barring a few games that used it for camera control like Metroid, I don't think so.

Remember a week ago when I thought 3D was dumb? Me neither.

It is dumb.. if you have to wear glasses.

Like I said, I've never used a touchscreen or stylus in a game before, so I can't imagine having any problems in games without them. You tell me. I can't imagine how they would need touchscreen. Use the gamepad or analog stick.

The only game I've seen using the bottom screen yet is in Pilotwings, where it's just a map that scrolls depending on where you are.

I think it could be used as an inventory screen in Zelda, where the game is not paused when you tap on the bottom screen, you just tap the icons to access your items. I always hated interrupting the flow of the game to go into the inventory to mix herbs or reload (Resident Evil games).

Damnit people stop saying this
"Stereoscopic 3D","goes deep into the screen". I don't think it's going to catch on.

How many DS games have you played? There are a few games where the touch screen can be used as a slightly interesting alternative, but there are many more where it is fundamentally required for the game to be playable, and more still that are pretty much "Here's a touch screen, have fun out there kid".

What's wrong with just 3D? Everyone knows what you're talking about in this context. And it's ****ing called 3DS.

4D just makes no god damn sense so stop it.

What's wrong with it is that we've been calling games 3D for years. I'm talking about for future discussions. I'll just refer to it as "stereoscopic 3D", or what do you think of "stereo 3D"?

People have been calling this technology 3D in this thread and so far there has been no confusion. That's because of a little something called context.

Stereo 3D is fine too if you insist that people are going to be just completely lost when you tell them "the nintendo 3ds has a 3d screen that doesn't require glasses"

What you're saying is like saying people get confused about the word 'bat' whether they're talking about a wooden sport paraphernalia or a flying creature.

"I beat him with a bat" OH LOL HOW DID YOU CATCH THE BAT????

Yeah, I know what you are saying, don't patronize me.

What I'm saying is that when discussing it outside of a video game forum, outside of a 3DS thread, or other situations, as I CLEARLY SAID.

They've been saying "AMAZING EYE POPPING 3D GRAPHICS" for over a decade, but there there was absolutely no eye popping taking place.

It is dumb.. if you have to wear glasses.
I like the idea of the glasses better, except that the whole set up is much more expensive. But I like the 3DS screen for a portable better.

I just hope an Advance Wars 3DS goes back to the "original" Advance Wars universe rather than the western-styled post-apoc shit that was in the latest game.

I enjoyed Days of Ruin. The grimmer change over cartoony was like a fresh new game. Not to mention I prefer the darker warfare. After six games or something the cartooniness and Andy being a ****tard started to really get to me; the change was a great way to get me back into it. Not to mention Tasha and Seaplanes.

The glasses give me a headache unfortunately, so I can't enjoy them even if I tried. :<

3D works on and off for me- slow moving objects seem to be the most effective. That said, I think I would have preferred a Wind Waker port to 3DS instead of Ocarina of Time. Can only play it so many times, and the 3DS would showcase Wind Waker brilliantly.

I loved many of the franchises that made it's home on the DS like Metroid, Super Mario Bro, etc. and even Advance Wars and Trauma Center, but beyond these few, there's no reason for me to purchase a new DS after my last one got stolen. (it was free anyways as it was given to me) Even less reason now that the 3DS is coming out with a much MUCH stronger lineup of games.

To be frank, there's been way too much kiddy garbage on the DS latety and no real games. I swear when I looked at the wall of DS games at Wal-Mart today, I thought I was looking at games for that preschooler handheld Leapster. I'm glad Nintendo is going back to it's roots with it's old skool AAA franchises with the 3DS. I'll finally have a reason to buy one this time.

Wow, you sure missed a lot.. Hotel Dusk, Henry Hatsworth, Starfy, Professor Layton, Infinite Space..

Is Ace Wright really all that good too? I've been thinking about that one also.

I might go to Gamestop/EB and check out your suggestions. Maybe it's just that Wal-mart sucks with it's selection of games. No, I'm pretty sure of it now. :p

I hear a lot of people that wear prescription glasses complaining because they can't wear two pairs of glasses.

I've hardly ever seen 3D, and the stuff I saw was like 20+ years ago. We used to get free cardboard 3D glasses and a little book in a box of cereal or something. I saw Jaws around 1981 on a 12" TV with rabbit ear antenna. Saw something at Epcot center, and maybe one other movie in the late 80s.

So, Basically, the worst shit ever, where things were like 2 colors and you could see red or blue edges around everything. But the illusion generally worked, and I was pretty amazed.

You certainly couldn't see 3D in video games before recently, and graphics have come a long way as well. So, I'm really excited about this.

I've been thinking of trying the Nvidia glasses to see how it is with my PC games. I hear it's great with some games, like Metro 2033. Crysis 2 will have a 3D setting for all platforms; 360, PS3, and PC.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is really good, yeah. Make sure you go in order, though. The later ones have references to earlier ones. Great stories, and some of the reasoning is really intuitive.

When I watched How to train your Dragon in 3d I wore both my glasses and the 3d ones. I managed because the technology has come along apparently since the last time I watched a 3d movie(SPY KIDS 3D) and it only gave me a mild migraine which only really took effect once it was over.

Yeah, the tech is different for the new stuff - polarisation, I think? Don't rely on it though, some of it just hurts your head anyway. I tried some CoDMW in 3D with one of the new monitors, terrible, terrible stuff.

/edit Veggie, I'm not afraid to say your img tags are broken or the server is down or something

Most of the people reviewing the nVidia 3D glasses say it takes a while to get used to it. They say to start with the effect turned way down and slowly turn it up. They seem to agree it takes about 2 weeks to get used to it.

The reviews are raving. Have a look: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814998031

After having stopped playing for a couple years, it took me about 2 weeks to get used to the polygon 3D of my PC games, so that sounds about right.

I also moved the monitor further back, which helped a lot. That seems comparable to turning the 3D effect down.

So 2DS games are playable? Will the new analogue nub thing make Mario 64 DS easier to control, or does it not work like that?

Wow, you sure missed a lot.. Hotel Dusk, Henry Hatsworth, Starfy, Professor Layton, Infinite Space..

How am one supposed to find the time to play all these damned games across all these damned platforms!?

Bah.

He means original DS. :p

New concern: are 2D games going to be as common? The DS was one of the last big bastions for sprite gaming. :(

Like I said, I've never used a touchscreen or stylus in a game before, so I can't imagine having any problems in games without them. You tell me. I can't imagine how they would need touchscreen. Use the gamepad or analog stick.

Mmkay lol.

Suffice to say, if you haven't played a DS game that uses the stylus, it's kind of pointless trying to explain it. Sort of like people arguing mouse/keyboard is superior when they've never touched a console. ;)

Anyway, I just can't understand the logic behind separating the 3DS' two big gimmicks. Why put 3D on one screen and touch on the other? I understand the technology might be a limitation, and it probably ****s with the 3D effect if you go sticking a stylus in front of the image, but I just ask myself what exactly the console has to gain from this decision and I keep coming up empty. Matter of fact, why make it another DS at all? Make another single screen handheld and give us something else we've never seen before (probably): TWO ****ING ANALOG STICKS.

Then give it a disc drive for gamecube games. Day one purchase. :D
