It's official boys and girls!

In my personal opinion I think this is a horrible move for Nintendo. A LOT of people lately have been switching from PS2 to Xbox and some even become Xbox fanboys. Specifically at lease two people that I know. One became a Halo fanatic saying that he no longer uses his PS2 and the other said that he has Star Wars Battlefront and that he saw the Xbox version and it looked much better. My point you ask? Well whether you agree or not, the general public usually flocks to the game systems with the best graphics. We all know that Nintendo not only has the weakest system (According To Nintendo) but that they now won't even support HD resolutions. Nintendo pulled a similar move by not including decent online plans with the GameCube and look how that turned out har har.

I have been a Nintendo fan all my life. I have a PS2 and Xbox and I find myself using my Xbox more then my GameCube. Not only are there more games but the graphics are much better. Playing Halo 2 or Doom 3 with widesceen mode turned on and HD turned on and surround sound it is an amazing experience. An experience that GameCube owners won't enjoy and the same goes to Revolution owners. Not only is this dumb but the fact that the Revolution won't even come out until 9 months after Sony and 12 after Microsoft spells disaster. Also rumors suggests that in 2008 the US will make it a requirement to have HDTV's in order to watch any form of tv. I don't know if thats true or not though. Feel free to disagree with me but please don't flame me and make this an intelligent conversation.

nintendo knows what they are doing

sure they will make a good move that will make people think twice before buy a next gen console

btw HDTV are required to play the nextgen consoles?

Ill just go ahead and quote the article as it describes my view:

"Nintendo's Revolution is being built with a variety of gamers' needs in mind, such as quick start-up time, high power, and ease of use for development and play. It's also compact and sleek, and has beautiful graphics in which to enjoy innovative games," Kaplan says. "Nintendo doesn't plan for the system to be HD compatible as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game. Will it make the game better to play? With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD."

HD adds shit because 95% can't use it, at least here anyway.

They said it would be 2-3 times more powerful than the GC, right? If you take the latest Zelda then times it by 3, you get bump maps, normal maps and all that other crap. I would think it should be able to run UT2007 easily.

Exactly, I'd say less than 3% of users will have an HDTV. I know I won't.

Nintendo cleared that 2-3 times more pwerful rumour up, saying they didn't release any technical specs, so USA Weekly or whatever magazine said that, is false. It may be even more powerful than 2-3 of a GC. Now, as for HD. I can personally care less, because I don't plan to buy an HDTV anytime soon. I think it could turn out to be a good move for Nintendo, because developers have to spend more money making games that must support HDTV. So why not make cheaper games for Nintendo?

I hope the revolution at least has component video out or else they are taking it too far. I mean why get rid of a feature that the gamecube had! I do think they are thinking right about how noone really has a HDTV. Also their games will have a lot more in the way of effects if they are at SDTV compared to HDTV because they dont have to worry about running into frame rate problems at such high resolutions.

Jesus, it's only HD. :| They've lost what, 3% of their tarket market?
This is the mindset that Nintendo is using, and it's tragically wrong, and this is why:

By 2008, Congress is expected to pass a resolution to force all networks to broadcast in digital signals only! This will make everyone's favorite square TV completely obsolete without a converter box. In preparation for this event, the number of households with HDTVs will skyrocket, and these new consumers will want a system that can take advantage of their fancy new equipment.

Sure, HDTV is new now, but by the end of these consoles' lifespan (2009 or 2010, probably), it will be taking over the market. Gamers tend to be early-tech adopters, so in researching a console, they will take this into consideration. It's just like their stance on online support and DVD media - look where that got them this generation. Nintendo needs to look towards the future, not the status quo right now.

Yes, but a good game can always be better with better graphics.

Ok, tell me where it says Japan, Europe, Asia, and all the other foreign countries will do the same.

I didn't claim that they would. But the US is a HUGE market for the new consoles, and with admittedly no actual stats to base this one, I'd say its the biggest and most important for the consoles' success.

Nintendo is probably adopting your mindset due to their Nipo-centric view of the console market.

I think Nintendo and its fanbase live in a bubble that's unaffected by the outside world. All are sustained by an internal economy that everybody else largely ignores.

Finland is turning off our analog TV signals in autumm of 2007, yet we have no HDTV at all, only test broadcasts. I doubt people will go and buy the hugely more expensive HDTV than simply buying a sub 50 dollar digitv box, that's roughly what the cheapest cost in Finland at this time, but because these are made for a very small market compared to the us, plus the technoligy is new I'd bet a digital tv box (DVB-T) will cost around 15-20$ when the need arises to buy one in the states.

Pfft doesn't bother me.

To get the most out of a HD supporting console I'd need to buy a HDTV as well, almost like getting a monitor for a PC. I just want something cheap I can plug into my bog-standard TV and play good fun games on.

Nintendo shall deliver.

I look forward to the day computer monitors have a decent picture in s-video and composite inputs, then I can say TVs are a bad memory from the past

Yes they are expected, but that does not mean it will happen. It's all bout da vote.

HD allows for higher resolutions giving off better detail.... but that requires more processing power.

Nintendo can always just put in more detail at lower resolutions giving off somewhat the same detail at about the same processing power.

I ask you: Have you ever played a Gamecube game such as Super Smash Brothers Melee on a 50 inch HDTV? It looks heinous, because the low resolution graphics (however good they might be) are stretched across a huge screen. The best graphics can still look pathetic in this case.

If you were being sarcastic, I apoligize.

Yeah, I've tried playing games using my monitor, but the picture is annoyingly fuzzy/blurred.

Smart move in my opinion. The revolution won't have the graphics of either competing system. And if it's in HD, that will just make jaggy edges look worse. No HD = slightly blurred.

HD looks so much better that I cant bear to play on a normal signal anymore. Nintendo has been making stupid decisions since the end of the nintendo 64. They have lost touch with their market.

Nintendo releases a larger percentage of great, highly rated games than any other company on their consoles. Nintendo typically has a fraction of the total games released by Sony, but has at least as many outstanding titles. I own 9 games on my GCN, but only 5 on my XBox and when I had my PS2, I had 3 on that. I consider myself a gamer, I love great GAMES not great technonology. And all gamers have different needs. I for one, am a sound nut. I love high-def 5.1 audio...I find nothing else to be more emmersive. Although I would have loved to see true 5.1 surround on the GCN, the games are too good to ignore. BUT, Nintendo has assured 5.1 surround in the Revolution...so I'm happy. I have an HDTV, but, at this point, it's irrelevant to me. It's pretty, but that isn't all there is to a game.

What if Nintendo releases a game that is widely considered the best game ever made....would you not even try it because it's not presented in HD?? You all that are complaining sell yourselves short as a gamer. No one has seen or played a game on the Revolution. I for one trust Nintendo to take care of the gamer....as they always have.

On the topic of Nintendo Revolution...

The music used in the fake NintendoON video was from the movie "The Rundown" which starred the Rock. It plays toward the end of the movie in the battle scene.

The main song is entitles "Guns" but it uses the previous song as well. The NintendoON uses several songs combined together. You can hear samples here:

I doubt this will have a serious effect. So far what, one person in this thread has a HDTV. I'm not getting one, I don't know many people who are.

Congress can pass the bill, but lets be honest, topboxes are a cheaper alternative, and the masses can't all fork out a couple of grand for a new TV (Reguardless of how much the companies want them too).

HDTV will be a slow process, look at Video, it's still going, only minorly but it's still around. Weren't they predicting it's death around the turn of the century.

Don't believe the hype, believe the past :)

I have an HDTV but I don't really care one way or the other about this decision by Nintendo. Obviously, I wouldn't be disappointed if they made their games run at resolutions like 540p, 720p, or 1080i... but it's not a selling point for me.
