No devices in the manager

hi guys, I need a bit of help here...

My mum's computer did something weird at the end of last year: all the devices disappeared from the manager, and wouldn't reappear via resetting or clicking the "scan" button. At that time, Windows did its little "you must re-activate me" thing, I'm guessing because of the hardware change. I have reactivated Windows, but the devices are still nowhere to be found, and that's causing problems such as not being able to use the internet becauase there is no modem detected.

Is there something I can do about this, or should we call in an expert?

I personally changed nothing, so either someone was messing with settings they shouldn't have been, or there was some kind of virus or hacking etc. involved.
