Twin blasts rocked Moscow subways killing 50 people. Suspects probably would be chechnians and other assorted islamists. Don't think the ultra nationalists would be involved. They be too much pussies.

Source: any news site basically

Edit: death toll is 37. And Russians say they were suicide bombers. So Chechen terrorists it is then

I want to live in a rural russian town so I can walk about with my ak47 dangling from my neck all badass like and not get in trouble (I feel like they wouldn't care).

This is terrible news. I won't even make an 'in soviet russia' joke as is the done thing regarding news and russia.

I thought the Chechen rebels were history. First the train bombing that killed 30 people November last year. And now this. Seems there is enough left in the tank for some more. Also this is the biggest attack in Moscow since 2004.

Interesting developement since the Chechens maybe using tricks honed in Iraq and afghanistan. There are a significant amount of Chechens in al qaeda I believe.

Reports state that the bombers were females(which increases the likelyhood of it being an Islamic attack.)

Also, the train bombing in November wasn't orchestrated by chechnyan(I'm not sure which is correct, chechen or chechnyan) rebels as far as I know, but by Ingushetian ones.

By the way Shyam, do you have any like source for your estimates about there being a "significant amount of chechnyans in Al-Qaeda" or is it just your gut-feeling?

I'd also like to note, that there is a pretty large number of 'former' chechnyan citizens that work in Moscow, especially as security personnel from what I've been told by friends in Moscow.

Remember, no Russians.

yeah that sucks, i can't believe it was women who carried out the attack too

It is often women or extremely young men, there was a documentary over here a while back on the psychology of suicide bombers and it was often either women who were forced to or young men who were unemployed and promised that their family would be provided for if they did it.

Sadly can't remember name of said documentary but it was fascinating.

Anyway, it's a real shame, not only for the dead Russians, but for the Russians from Caucasus whom are now being targetted by angry 'mobs', there are already reports coming out of Moscow of Caucasians being assaulted and beaten heavily, some very badly.

It just seems to be luck that none of'em have died yet. But that's mob-mentality for you, logic goes out the window and they target anyone that is in any remote way connected to what they're angry at.

I apologise Gargantou, you are right, Ingushetian rebels caused the train bombing in November 2009. Sorry about that. Also the Russians have organised Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechnya into a North Caucasus region. Am I right ?

As for Chechens in Al Qaeda, Can I use the Pakistani army as a source ? Because the Pakistani Brigadier General in charge of the offensive in North Waziristan have commented they have killed or arrested several Chechens in Al Qaeda training camps, Along with the Uzbeks, Afghans and Arabs. You can argue globalisation of terror here

In fact Brigadier Abbas indicated the Chechens have started going back to their homeland after their training in recent months, as the Pakistani army have tightened the noose likewise for the other ethnicities as well. I don't mean there are a lot of Chechens in Al Qaeda, but rather there is a significant amount. If that mkaes sense ? Also Al Qaeda has actually endorsed the new Chechen Rebel Leader, Umar Damorov ? (someone correct me on this).

I hope that helps.

As I recall, the Chechen conflict was a very nasty affair, and there are enough psychologically damaged young women and men to join the insurgents. I hope the Russians don't have a massive fit and do something stupid, like cracking down very hard in Chechnya, because I suspect that's what the rebels want.

Soap and Cpt Price was using one of the carriages as a get-away vehicle and ****ed up

Actually Female Suicide bombers have a long history in this conflict. They are termed "Black Widows" by the Russian media. Usually because they have lost relatives in the conflict.

it doesn't seem like Russia gets all the attention these days....could be why Its hard for Westerners to understand the situation.

You know that you can probably get away with that a lot more here in the US than you could over there, right? We're americans, we love our guns brah.

Trust me, in this case ignorance is indeed bliss. You don't want to know the atrocities committed by both the sides.

I'm sure Putin will find the ones reasonable and poison them with Plutonium.

More like will be terminated.

I can see that happening. I seriously think all Presidents secretly kill some bad guys behind closed doors

Indeed, I've seen videos of Russian soldiers executing Chechnyan rebels, but it was a long time ago thankfully, and not all that bloody.

Anyway, I just saw a discussion between political experts and anti-terrorist experts who discussed the change in the 'groupings' in Chechnya.

Back when the first Chechen war occurred, it was mainly separatist groups(working together) fighting for an independent Chechnya, free of any religious motivations.

But, these have now been replaced by Islamic fundamentalists(whom, indeed Shyam, as you claimed, appear to have been in many cases even trained by al-Qaeda) who want an Islamic Emirate of Chechnya, with Sharia-laws being the center of the society.

I wonder if it was the brutality of the first Chechen wars that caused so many Chechnyans to be drawn into Islamic fundamentalism, and seek contact with other Islamic terrorist organizations.

I'd say so. The same thing happened with Palestine. As far as I'm aware, the PLO used to be fairly secular and marxist. Now the Palestinian resistance had degenerated into Islamofascism.

Hamas(Who after the election used violence to try to get rid of the other groups that were also elected to help lead Palestine) isn't officially part of the PLO as far as I am aware, someone feel free to point out if I'm wrong though, I'm not up to date exactly on how the situation looks over there with regards to internal politics in Palestine.

Yeah the PLO and Hamas are different.

The Russian foreign minister has actually stated that the Russian Security services now suspect Afghan/Pakistani militants may have helped plan this attack. If this is true, Russia may need to watch itself, as the Caucasus rebels may start copying Al Qaeda style attacks.

You are right, In fact the Chechens observe Sufi Islam. If you know what that means, it is a moderate version of Islam Wahabbists hate. In fact I think some Chechen rebel leaders are now alarmed that Dokka Umarov proclaimed himself Emir of the Caucasus region.
