I did go to my nearest retail store at 9am this morning and plonked down my $89.95 aud, now I would like to play my paid for game without a CD whirring in my drive..... if that is ok with you of course

It is better to be silent and have people suspect you of ignorance than to open your mouth and remove all doubt

Whatever. Nocd patches are still illegal, remember.
Yeah right, illegal until the company itself releases its own, so even they obviously recognize the inconvenience!

Weather these biotches want to admit it or not, I'm sure they've used a NoCD Crack at some point in their computing lives...I use em all the time.

I would appreciate if someone would help me out here aswell. Where I live the only version available is the dvd version yet I don't have a drive. I figured I could get around this by installing from my father's dvd drive over the network but now I've found out there's a cd check. I find this bizarre those who have downloaded hl2 off the net having purchased via steam will never have this problem yet those who purchase the retail are forced to have the hl 2 cd in the drive each time they play. So in short I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me out with info on a nocd solution as otherwise I'm screwed :/

Disclaimer: I'm not promoting the use of no-CD cracks at all...

but...

I paid 129 bucks Australian for the DVD Collector's edition and even after my registration was verified etc, it still asks me for the DVD to be in the drive :( I can't say I'm impressed as people who got the game via Steam don't have this requirement and paid less. I would have bought over Steam... except downloading via dial-up made it pointless.

Only other disappointment was the XL t-shirt... I'm 5'6" and 70 kilos... it's going to make a nice PJ... or tent :D

same here.
got a dvd drive but it accesses during gameplay (5 second freeze) and is VERY loud.
+
sometimes it doesnt detect the dvd right :(

Warez = theft of a game.

Nocd patch != warez.

Half Life 2 requires activation in order to work.

Cracking the CD-PROTECTION will not in any way change the way you activate it.
You still have to register a real CD-KEY and you must still unlock the files even with retail.

NOCD patches aren't illegal.

However they CAN be used for illegal purposes.

nocd might not imply warez, but nevertheless i still recognize that its illegal.
but who the hell cares?
i want to play without freezes !! :(

Wouldn't all mods be illegal by this definition?

Technically they are illegal.
yeah :)
thats why the developer of a game can prohibit the modding of this game by law.
if they allow it .. fine, but dont expect backup from the law if valve gets angry at u and wants to shut down ur mod :)

Technically who cares? Has anyone ever been taken to court for using a no cd patch? I paid for my HL2, and I don't want the dvd in the drive everytime I want a quick game of CSS, just like the people who bought it over steam.

Hmmm.. after going through an hour and a half of just trying to connect to Steam, then waiting another half hour for it to verify my cd-key and unlock, it wants the ****ing CD in the drive when I play as well!?!? BULLSHIT!

Whats illegal is modifying the half life engine, in this case the hl 2 executable. "Modding" the game is perfectly legal as valve provides the source for the dll files which govern the rules of the gameplay. Modders can only alter and compile these files thereby changing how the game acts, from physics to team selection etc but the core hl engine cannot be altered, such as the code it uses to render the graphics for example, as far as I know :p

No Cds are illegal?

I always had the thought that they were not illegal as long as they were for private and practical use. Not copying.

actually no cd patches are not illegal if you own the game, but if you dont, then it is!

Nobody cares if its illegal or not, the only thing I am afraid of is losing my steam account if valve somehow cares and finds out.
