No im not a pirate HARRR.
But that big of a gap to make copies, its 1005% sure that the game will get outside of pressing and be released to warez, wich will make vivendi and valve lose tons, but hey. Its not as if i care lol. I got my free Hl2 waiting on steam thanks to my Voucher.
:p

err... Is there a better season to release a game to prevent piracy? Its not like pirates are "seasonal morons" you know.

valves fault for making the MP CSS. many more people would have bought this game if it wasnt for that.

im sure they are copying the game as fast as they can. I hope steam stops a lot of the piracy.

Ummm what the hell was the point of this thread. HL2 will eventaully get online but even piraters will still buy it because of the online component.

whoops double post. Anyway I will emphasize that Vivendi has really no choice. They will produce the game as fast as possible. A worldwide release is a big thing.

Did i mention anything about seasons? No!.
I was talking about the GAP until its released.

cs:s got cracked the day it came out, and the modified executables allow you to play online, yes thats right, ONLINE WITH VALID SERVERS

Well its because of the cycle of the moon. There are more Pirates (argh) out there. Yeah thats it......the cycle of the moon........

Oh please don't make me laugh, 95% of the people who will buy it won't even realize there is no HL2 themed multiplayer until a mod is already released containing one anyway.

Piracy starts at the duplication factories, so no matter the gap, it WILL be pirated, its as simple as that. Even if it was coming out in 2 weeks or even a week we would see pirates with it in no time. Sad but true... :(

Hmmm perhaps you would like to provide vug with a few million copies and set up the world wide retailer release contracts through warehouses for them than, since you obviously believe that u can do it faster than 3 weeks.

The only issue I have with nov 16this illbe driving to my new condo in tennesee nov15th/16th and I'm not sure how long till i get internet, and i ordered through steam =(. I wonder if i can take my computer to a library to activate my hl2 lol

I have still not seen any direct effect piracy has on the gaming scene. Or the movie industry or the music industry or the television industry.

There are enough "checks and balances" where everyone still gets "paid".

Lets see we cut out manuals and made boxes smaller. Do we see a price drop? Nope. We put it on Steam....do we see a price drop? (only time will tell)

Actually, if CZ wasn't released on steam, they would've been still trying to crack it. So I mean, it took them about 2 or 3 weeks to crack CZ to work on steam. But they can play on valid servers, valve knows which people are using the crack, they will end it soon enough, watch.

Aknot looking glass was a company directly put out of business due to piracy.

Please provide me with a link or two as a google for looking glass and piracy comes up blank for the first 2 pages.

I would like to read about it and see what games and marketing they had in place and how they actually surmised piracy did them in.

Why don't you help Vivendi make some copies? Lets say they were going to burn 10 million games for the Nov 16th release and you helped Vivendi by buring HL2 copies on your CD-ROM. Lets see, one game is 6 CD's with an average burn rate of 1 cd every 4 minutes non-stop until November 16th you would have helped Vivendi by producing a mere 1,800 games.

That way, maybe Vivendi could release HL2 on November 15th at 11:59 PM instead off November 16 12:00 AM.

You know, it takes time to produce games for the masses.

I can burn DVD's....I will help. For a fee.

thief is the game. Check the sales figures for it. It was the game that beat half-life as goty. It had no piracy security and the devs complained publically after it went goty that piracy basically killed its sales. The only Goty ever that wasn't a hit.

I ahve to agree, this gives much more time for a game to get pirated.

Dome 3 copies didnt show up on the net until the day it launched. Sure the alpha leaked, and i think a few had it a day or so before launch, but it didnt slip into the "ill donwload, fack buying phase" nov 16 gives plenty of time for mr xxx to get a copy out of his copying job to his boy mr yyy who is gonna get his crack crew made props for releasing this puppy.

oh well

But they did 3 other games after that.

System Shock 2
Flight Unlimited 3
and Thief 2.

So one game because of piracy broke that company after these 3 other games came out?

And while I bought it I never liked it. So while some people at vrious gaming magazines thought it was great doesnt mean it appealed to the masses. Hence I did not buy T2.

**EDIT**
And it did have copy protection. Illegal TOC, Oversized and CD Checking.

Just a little question if anyone else has any other information on this topic that I am missing.

Thanks.

It seems possible that their will actually not be any piracy until the game is released over steam. If retail copies are not allowed to authenticate via steam until the time of release, it is possible the retail distribution pack is basically just the steam preload and a cd key. On the other hand I have heard rumors of people decrypting the content already.

Piracy starts at the supplier. The Supplier gets it from various sources.

All valve need to do is make the content encrypted, i mean why not? It's still going to be authenticated over Steam, so why not just make cd's with the encrypted gcf's?

I know people who are supplying counter strike source, for a price, or you can d/l it obviously, but you play the game with all the maps available through steam, on a steam account, how has this happened? i thought steam was so secure you could only do this using a 'dummy' steam program. These people are using actual accounts on steam. And they laughed at my suggestion of an ip ban, as they dont have 'static ip's' :flame:

its up to valve and vu when the game is released, im sure they know what they are doin.

Piracy happens no matter what. We can't do anything, companies try to do things but ultimately fail. The date has nothing to do with the game being pirated. Guarenteed.

I really do wonder how so many people are playing cs:s online without actually having purchased it. I've been on a few times and heard pple bragging about it. I hope they do get squished by valve.

I bet the CDs will be encrypted like the pre-load.
That is an excellent point! I'm not positive if that's how they did it. After all they have to maintain compatibility with those with no internet. Encryption is the only way to eliminate piracy altogether. I would be VERY surprised if hackers were able to break HL2's encryption. I hope that next time around i.e HL3, it's required internet verification for a unique cd-key. If you don't have internet then you should be able to dial in a special number and verify it like that.

Yes either at duplicate factory or some story that gets game very early but thats kinda risky but it has happend a few times.

source was pirated almost a year ago, if something like that could be pirated, what else can be?!

Valve will kick all the cheaters off don't worry. Every copy of the game that is made, there is a unique key generated, which is copied onto the valve servers. That includes every copy of HL2. If your key doesn't match up with one in the server, you won't get it.

While you can say what you wish aknot. That doesn't change the fact that it is well known in the development community that piracy was one of the main factors that killed looking glass studios.

But think whatever you want.

and I just love how you add 'illegal TOC' in there. An advocate for public domain and piracy I guess? Zealots are to funny =)

Illegal TOC is a type of "copy" protection. You should really learn the topic you are going to talk about.

Again please provide me with some "background" on this as I can not find it. It is all "heresay".

How come no other has gone down because of piracy?

I think because there is no other (cept theirs and others word) that piracy was the demise of Looking Glass.

I also believe from what I read the Publiser was already pumping money into someone else for Thief 3 before LG even folded.

**ILLEGAL TOC**
This protection can be recognized when looking at the CD tracks. Usually there seems to be a second Data track (usually after some audio tracks). The CD ISO standards don't allow this thus the name Illegal TOC. In most cases the second Data track is pointing to the first Data track or parts of another track.

Stealing the source code? Like that's going to happen twice.
