Novint Contest - Falcon vs Mouse Revisited

Do you guys have any locations I could possibly try one out?

Do you guys have any locations I could possibly try one out?

Hey DEATHMASTER, we don't have locations where you can try, but we are about to start a cybercafe program, where cybercafes can get one, and where people can then try it out locally. thx, tomnovint

I notice I have two tracking numbers, are the grip on the falcon shipped separately?

yep, there are two boxes - one for Falcon and one for pistol grip ;)

thx, tomnovint

After some consideration of what I would splurge on before I went on sub status at work, I decided I would get the Novint Falcon.

The best way I rationalized this, mind you, is that the Novint on sale would end up costing about the equivalent of 3 new video games. I then reminded myself which of those three new video games would be good, and I said "none" (Because this is often true)

So, review.

I am from the states, and I must say my order came extremely fast. After it was shipped, it was at my doorstep the day after in the evening.

My package did not come with any of the CD drives/DVDs or manuals. I called their CS and I was guided to an area to download it all.
After that I experienced some odd problems attempting to run a few Valve games, called the CS again, they were very helpful and I was able to start playing my games in no time.

Penumbra:
Very unique, immersive experience. Interesting and cool how you can feel just about any surface and it's force against you. Very intense.

Half-Life 2/Portal:
Very, very awesome.
At first I was a little disapointed at the recoil, however I realized you could adjust the recoil of every weapon to your liking.
Once I adjusted all the weapons to a more realistic recoil, it was extremely satisfying. Felt like I was really Gordon Freeman shooting a combine with a Magnum/shotgun/Supergravitygun/etc.
Portal is quite interesting as well because of the physical forces when flying out of portal and against a wall.

I can't wait to play around in Half Life 2 more and try out Crysis with it as well. I am loving it.

I played around in L4D just for a bit and it was quite intense. I will probably keep my recoil much lower for L4D since it is already a difficult game.
I have yet to try TF2 and Quake Wars.

As of right now, the Novint will definitely occupy several of my single player games.

Hey Zombieturtle01, thanks for taking the time to write this. Was nice to read. Please let me know anything I can do to make your Falcon experience a good one.

As you move over to online games (we just released Battlefield 2 and Counter Strike Source), keep in mind it takes time (on the order of 20 hours) to get back to the level you were playing with the mouse. From that point you can tweak and get better. We recommend leaving the controls at their defaults as you learn to play online too (though sounds like you are getting used to it in single player).

if you'd like a free game for taking the time to post a review, I'm happy to do so. You can email customersupport[at]novint[dot]com referencing this post and we'll get you one. I'd recommend our driving game XLR8 myself.

thx, tomnovint

Thanks Tom, will do :]

Perhaps a silly question, but will putting the recoil on a high setting for some of my single player games exhaust the Novint motors?

no, you're fine putting the recoil up high. If anything breaks on the Falcon in doing so (which it shoudn't), we'll replace it. thx, tomnovint

We knew the support was coming, but I've just installed the Battlefield 2 1.5 patch and there is a pretty 'Novint' button on the options menu now. How strange this old game, which had been semi-retired to my cupboard has been reborn. Have you had any feedback on the falcon with BF2 yet Tom? Or CSS for that matter?

Buy one and find out!

Hey Hectic Glenn, BF2 has gotten a lot of really great feedback so far, in our beta testing. It's been a very popular game for us, and is great with the Falcon. CSS is newer, so we haven't gotten as much feedback (we didn't have a beta, so it still needs some tweaking as well), but it's pretty standard controls similar to what people have really liked in our other games, so I'm expecting it to be popular too. The employee testing we did had people excited.

thx, tomnovint

Hey all, tomorrow night we're going to do something fun - we're going to have a Falcon vs mouse night on our EGO TF2 server. We'll have some events to get spots in the contest (for example, first person to backstab me, first person to snipe headshot John T, etc), plus you can start to see who your competition will be on the Falconers side )

What we'll do is start each map with a password, let the Falconers in, then open it up for everyone else. That way, we'll have Falconers against mousers. Each time we start a new map, we'll repeat (start with password on, then open it up to everyone else).

should be a good time

our server IP is 208.43.203.94:27015

hope to see a bunch of people there tomorrow, and is a good chance to get some spots in the contest, with our challenges we'll do throughout the night. We'll start at 8:00 PM MST (GMT-6 right now, during daylight savings time), 10 PM EST (New York).

thx, tomnovint
