Nuclear Dawn - CGW Scans

Jesus christ. :x

By the way, at least one part of that blog is seeming bullshit: (EDIT: IGNORE THIS, I WAS WRONG LOL)

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2967/3094/1600/statuecompare.jpg

This second image is the one that really bothered me and compelled me the most to create this. The top image shows a picture taken from a nuclear dawn news post, showing a person shooting at some enemies with a pistol. Even back then I thought there was something a little strange about the 'animations' on the players. The image underneath it is taken from page 3 of the magazine scan and shows the exact same scene except a different angle and a different weapon being fired. The reason for this is those 'players' are simply static props, exported and positioned like figurines, yet you are lead to believe that it is ingame action. Take a very close look, in both screenshots they are in identical poses.

Except that if you look, you can't see whether it's a different weapon or not. The player models are also at slightly different angles, leading me to believe that in fact these are two screenshots taken in quick succession as the player strafes to one side firing his weapon. The second screenshot might only be showing the same gun in a different stage of its firing animation.

EDIT: Actually no scratch that it's a machinegun.

All i have to say is: "there's no such thing as bad publicity"..
All this fuss about ND is not making them "less famous" :), nor will it make less people download it (put these 2 things together..)

Congrats to the ND team for getting into the mag though. :)

Something else I don't get:

why is it such a cardinal sin to make a news 'item' of this? If there was no substance to it then fair enough - I'm disinterested, generally, innewsposts that just say 'we got into a magazine but we can't show you, heh', but in actual fact you've got the whole magazine article right there to read.

I don't follow the forums incessantly like some people in this thread..

but judging from just this thread it looks like a LOT of people hating on a mod..

you could just ignore a thread like this but instead we have guys spending valuable time photoshoping an insult... it looks like they put a lot of thought into it too...
Hey, it took all of twenty minutes.

I don't understand how they don't deserve a little laugh at 'em. They faked screens and hyped their mod into oblivion. It's pretty funny stuff, if you ask me.

Ah well, 'least my friends had a chuckle at it. :)

There are always exceptions and limits to this :p
Although MJ's troubled and "extraordinary" life in in the past has always worked in his PR favor (the more fuss the more exposure).

Also, lets not compare appels with oranges, :smoking:
As an example Carmageddon's exposure and fame didnt really decrease by being portrayed all over the news as a threat to society, did it?
And why are game companies making all those fake "ingame trailers" portraying how "they vision the game will look like" but "forgetting" to mention its not actually ingame footage.. (like the Killzone2 video)

ps, i'm not suggesting anything, just that i dont think its hurting/decreasing ND's exposure so the ND team shouldnt take too much of this "hatred" thats going on. Just sit back and enjoy the fact that their mod's google ranking is going up :)

well regardless you're giving them more exposure, I would have never known about this mod if it wasnt for the smack talking on these fourms

Then congrats the the ND PR team. And I thank them for allowing such pristine comedy at the expense of their dignity. More exposure means everything!

The fans who are so far up ND's anus are pretty entertaining, too. Maliciously defending the team from every which negative comment, no matter how true the accusations are. Even when their faultless leader admits that everything the opposers state is, indeed, true; apparantly the whistleblower was "pwnd." Congrats again to the ND team for genetically engineering a new breed of fanboys. :)

I would also prefer it if my friends ceased taking potshots at me for supporting Nuclear Dawn, Disturbed.

He was taking potshots how?

Maybe he was talking about everyone else in that thread being sad? Probably not...but maybe!

Hey guys, I found some more scans that were released in only the limited edition magazine! Here they are!

Between that and the "Natural Selection" comment at the beginning of this thread, I sprayed my Dew all over my monitor. Fantastic work.

Seems the usual ND suspects are not around - or are they just hiding.

Seeing as they know we are right I believe that the latter of your conclusions is in effect.

Why come out when you can post on your own forums where noone can read your replies?

Hahaha! So spin doctor Crispy, how do we weave our way out of this one? ;)
It's quite simple, Samon. There's no spin or weaving required. All we have to say on this can be read in this comment of this thread on our forums. I'll include an unedited quote from the statement:
As a team, we sincerely apologize to anyone who felt their heart sink upon reading these accusations or who may feel betrayed as a result of this whole ordeal. We are devoted to our fans and the mod community in general. Our intentions steadfastly remain: to release a ground breaking and freely accessible mod of the highest quality. Accusations like this only further cement our sentiments.
We're not going to let one person's blog get in the way of us making and releasing a high quality mod for free. From our mention in Steam news, to the comments made in that same magazine by the industry professionals we're lucky enough to have working on the project, to the comments made by other members of our team who have put months of work into this project: everything contradicts the absurd notion that ND is vapourware.

If, having read this statement, you still have queries about Nuclear Dawn they will all be answered when you play the mod itself (unless you get selected as a beta tester, in which case you'll know the truth when we begin our closed beta testing later this summer).

Thanks for the interest. :)

Doesn't that quote from DaveL basically say that what the blog says is true?

"Yeah, they were altered, but it's all real now, honest".

Just the same shit that Developers have been doing for years, and something I thought the modding community didn't need to do. But I guess not.

The modding community doesnt need too, but the hype machine that is ND does.

I still have no idea why people do not understand that DaveL just basically admitted that every single accusation Dr. Strangelove made in that blog is completely 100% true. Well, besides the bit about it proving to be vaporware, as you cannot really prove such a thing. But the specific accusations call all be found:
-Crispy- said:
Once again, you can read DaveL admitting to releasing false, photoshopped material:
-Crispy- said:

The only thing DaveL added was that apparantly everything shown is working now. I don't understand why the screens were faked if the technology is working, but hey, its your lies.

Ahah, the magazine shots were photoshopped.

Rofl, what a ****ing shit mod.

That's just a symptom of the main problem- modders trying to act like professional developers. It doesn't matter if they are or not, or if they have aspirations of joining the industry, it only matters that they're treating modding as some sort of deadly serious business where you have to compete against everyone else and you have to act like a real game developer.

By the way, the concept that you need a PR man is another symptom.

Everyone! I have a wonderful idea! How about we all have a group hug and just look forward to Nuclear Dawn, photoshopped promos or no?

Or: no.

Paj summed up the problem, and that's just the tip of the stuff ND does. Like planting hired "fans" on forums to drown out critics.

You're new to the forums, I see.

Ahem.

Aye, Paj basically hit the spot. He "bowled" the problem, so to say.

I just do not understand why some people fail to grasp this.

i find your lack of faith disturbing

im not sure who to care about, the-all-spamming-'noob'-hating-elitist-big-heads or the nice-to-their-own-community-working-on-a-great-project-that-just-by-looking at-their-team-and-screenshots-make-you-cum-instantly-even-while-ignoring-their pr-and-comments-big-heads.

One thing I do know tho is one of these will soon be brenging joy all over hl2 land and the other preserving their comments because you're not worth it

Maybe you should see someone about that little premature ejaculation problem :)

I'll have 'faith' when, sometime in 2007, I get to play the mod. Until then, all this PR/screens bullshit is just hot air.

Agreed.

By the way, the concept that you need a PR man is another symptom.

Disagree, most average gaming fans find out about ANY new games by the gaming magazines/websites/E3 etc. They are just another tool to be used in promoting the work you are doing. Everyone 'in' the modding scene knows the places to look. However there are quadzillions (number intentionally exagerated) of gaming fans that don't know there is a modding scene let alone what mods are out there or where to look for them.

Counter-Strike introduced many many people to modding. How did most people find out about CS? From a gaming site/magazine. They (CS Staff) may not have had to seek out the publicity but it was given to them, and the entire modding scene benefited from it.

PR is not a necessary part of modding, but it certainly has a place.

Ugh... this is all bad business. I've been played like a bitch by the PR pimps!

Dude, what the f*ck are you talking about? :stare:

Zunni: It depends entirely on your goals. If you're aiming to be something big, to be popular, to amass a large following, then you probably have a place for PR.
On the other hand, if you're just making a mod for shits and giggles, then it would be a waste of time.

Then ND is justified in having a PR?

ND are justified in doing whatever it is that ND feel they need to do. I, personally, don't see the need for PR for a non-commercial project. In their position, I wouldn't have anyone assigned to doing PR.

Ahem.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I'm nobody's PR-bitch. This is just a new handle for my old account, NickOuellette. Don't go pointin' that finger, I've got nothing to do with ND.

Anyway, I recognize that there are some issues here. I read that blog article pointing out some really odd things with ND's media releases, and I believe that they are, in fact, BS. But at the same time, it also seems like lots of games, commercial and mod, do things like that, and I don't know why everyone's picking on ND, even if they are a hype-factory with an annoying spokesman. I can think of quite a few mods with outspoken, obnoxious leaders.

EDIT: BTW, if this whole "OMG NUCLEAR DAWN IS PLANTING PR SPIES LOL" thing becomes some sort of witch hunt for anybody looking forward to Nuclear Dawn, I think the members of this forum are in need of a serious reality check. Sometimes mods have fans, y'know? Maybe you've heard of them. They're the people who are looking forward to a game cause they think it looks cool. Not because they're being promised money/credit/morphing-screens-that-give-you-a-handjob, etc.
