Obsidian's "Alpha Protocol"

Some of these reviewers are dumb. Especially Jim Sterling.

Wow.
Wasn't expecting such bad reviews.

Well, actually, considering it's by Obsidian... no, I'm not very surprised.

Sterling is a douchebag, I wouldn't take him seriously.

I might wait for a review on RPS first. I had high hopes for this game as well :(

Another unpolished turd by Obsidian Entertainment. Gee, what a shocker.

Add Sega to the equation and you are guaranteed to put out a turd.

This makes me wonder how Fallout: New Vegas will turn out, same development house, no?

Yep.

Hopefully this will have sucked all the suck out of them so New Vegas will be good. Don't count on it though. Odds on it'll be a buggy, half finished mess.

I'm real disapointed this game didn't pan out, I really wanted this game to be good. It seemed like such a fun idea. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something else to keep my mind off it.

My only hope is that the story is above average. Reviews don't concern me that much, if the scores are mediocre, but some of these indicate the game is downright terrible, I'm a little worried now.

Hahaha, I love this guy. Some responses to comments on that review:

"It's definitely not a 2."

I am glad you understand Destructoid's rating system more than the guy who, y'know, *created* Destructoid's rating system.

"Jim Sterling, you are a ****ing troll. Quit your job because evidently you aren't up to it."

Nope.

This is what I saw when I tried to read your last comment:

"BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH"

Ya'll need to stop acting like religious fundamentalists about this shit.

Norieaga: Have you beaten Alpha Protocol yet?

In fact, I hope anybody who whines about this review goes out and buys it. You deserve to have $60 stolen from you.

How so?

Edit: oh yeah, I guess you're talking about New Vegas.
I'm sure it won't be bad, I think it looks quite good at this time while Alpha Protocol always looked sort of weird to begin with.

This:

I am still happy about some of Obsidian’s other current projects, New Vegas included, because they are going pretty well. Their big unannounced project is looking great and is already much better than AP ever was, and that may end up being the game that everyone was looking for with AP.
I do hope that if the whole story is true that Chris Parker and Sega leave the teams to do the work they need to do, not what they think they need to do.

I might even buy it when it becomes really really really cheap like ~£5 or less. It will be interesting to see if they do any patch or if the release is the last thing they do with this game.

Now I'm worried about Fallout: New Vegas. Fingers crossed.

I'm honestly thinking about cancelling my pre-order. I was hoping for another flawed gem like bloodlines. I officially hate chris parker now.

AP never made a strong impression on me. I kinda expected this, but I held out a little hope that Obsidian would be able to put out a worthwhile game, even if technically marred. Sounds like a bit of a turd though. I keep hearing about how the characters, story, and VO work suck as well, which I would have assumed would have been one of the game's stronger suits given the developer's pedigree for this kind of thing.

Of course, I haven't actually played it. But my budget doesn't really allow me to plunk down sixty dollars for what sounds like a pretty risky venture.

Apparently there are some initial impressions posted on the official ap forums, and they seem to indicate the game is good, but flawed. Not sure how reliable those are but I guess I could just trade it in for nv if it turns out to be complete garbage.

Congrats, here's your prize!

I didn't get to read what was on the paper.

Stop linking metacritic, they're so slow to add reviews.

The gametrailers one sounds pretty damning.

It's hard to recommend it to any but the most patient. If you've got a high threshold of tolerance for busted gameplay, the extracurricular stuff can redeem the experience. But that's a big if.
And then they give it a 6.4. God I love their scoring system.

yeah i watched the gt one and it was weird. Watching it made it sound like a 7ish score until the end summary where it sounded like a 4 and then they give a 6. WTF? o_O

I mostly watch GT reviews just to see the game in action and hear some impressions. If nothing else, they're usually okay at picking out a game's flaws. Beyond that... yeeeah.

Someone was telling me that the euro reviews are better than the us ones. Haven't had time to investigate that claim though.

Jim Sterling gave Deadly Premonition a score of a perfect 10. I wouldn't use his opinion as a basis for buying a game.

Heh, I watched that Let's Play. Actually kind of annoyed me, there were so, so very many things Spoony could have ripped on that he seemed to completely miss. Like the fact the main character has a flashlight embedded into his chest Gordon Freeman style. Or the way he congratulates himself every time he scores a headshot, like it's a survival horror DDR or something. Or how about... like... everything else.

Seriously though I'm pretty sure that Jim guy is trollan hard. The way he derides his own commentors makes it seem like he's deliberately baiting them for it...

So having played through this twice already, the combat is ****ing hilariously bad, but I can't stop playing it. If you play this game like a total asshole, it completely redeems how bad the combat is. It also has one of the best side-kicks I've ever seen.

Theres a guy in the game named Steven Heck, who if you ask him to help you on one mission that takes place in a subway, he will ride on a subway train with a minigun mounted on it and destroy everyone. Steven Heck is amazing.

Played about an hour of it. Annoying camera and hacking minigame, and it really does look pretty bad.

Other than that, I have no idea what is wrong with it. Still trying to find out what's so bad about it.
