A 'lifestyle' choice...sorry isnt that just college talk for ***king lazy?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/2008011...althobesity;_ylt=ArpN7HZ9m6SDxaUE9tLQISjVJRIF

Youve GOT to be kidding me.

Obesity is a natural extension of an advancing economy. As you become a First World economy and you get all these labor-saving devices and low-cost, easily accessible foods, people are going to eat more and exercise less

Regular Sherlock Holmes over here

With the rising tide of obesity come health problems and an increased burden on the healthcare system and industry.

"But the nasty side-effects of obesity aren't as nasty as they used to be," Finkelstein said.

"When you have a first-rate medical system that can cure the diseases that obesity promotes, you no longer need to worry so much about being obese," he told AFP.

"With our ever-advancing modern medicine there helping to save the day (at least for many people), are government and the media blowing the magnitude of the 'obesity crisis' out of proportion?" his book says.

Right so now i can just eat myself to death and not be worried about any diseases i may get along the road? Someone shoot this moron.

This kind of stuff sickens me to the core, making excuses for people that cant be bothered to exercise and just eat mcdonalds 3 times a day.

Im sorry, if its self-inflicted, ive got no sympathy for you. If youre exercising alot and ACTUALLY TRYING and its taking a longer time than most, then fair enough, atleast youre doing something about it ffs.

YES some people have no choice, but dont promote it to the people that simply cant be arsed, and im sure youll find thats the majority.

What's it matter to you if they're fat?

its not their fault they eat non-stop and make underwear shopping a fruitless endeavor.

Its not ok to be fat... :(

fat-lady-on-top.jpg

I don't personally care, I just think its sad to willfully be fat.

But to be fair, I am like, genetically lucky in the body fat regard, its not like I eat healthily.

Not razor thin, but I'm not fat, I'm just fine, and all I get from a maccy D's is a bloated feeling for an hour. :cheese:

Mom, Dad.. i've decided to be fat, it's going to make me a happier person.

Kinda oxymoronish.

sweeping generalizations ftl ..not all fat people eat "mcdonalds 3 times a day" ..some people are genetically predisposed to be fat skinny tall short or stupid ..we dont choose what we are ..we can just make the best of what we are and not try to fit into an unobtainable unrealistic mold

btw the overwelming majority will be overweight by middle age ..just look around you, how many m3n in their 40's and 50's do you see who have trim fit bodies?

I lol'd at m3n, l337 speekz d4yz us c0m1n.

You know what's funny is a few centuries ago everyone wanted to be the fat guy, and everyone wanted to f*ck the fat chicks. Because thems were the people what was eatin'.

Now that everybody's fat everyone wants to be thin, 'cause sandwiches are so readily available.

Funny, that.

dont forget white as a sheet ..tanned skin = peasants who worked the fields all day

Indeed, but milk-white, pale skin is still attractive today.

Not so much fat people, except as a fetish.

Yeah... what stern says... and just because it's a suitable thread, I'll paste what I wrote in another thread...

That's a ridiculous thing to say. Obesity isn't a factor simply because people are pigs when they eat. As we advanced technologically we have countries like the United States and others producing foods that severely increase the chances of rapid weight gain.

And the sad fact is, the more poverty stricken demographics are more likely to be obese. Why? Because the foods people are more easily able to afford to feed their families(not talking about fast food), cheaper foods... are more calorie dense and void of valuable nutritional content.

It has nothing to do with natural selection. It has to do with irresponsible food industries keeping pace with health advancements, reducing human health despite medical health advancements. The people who suffer most are the ones who cannot afford the healthier food, which is becoming less available to the masses, and more expensive.

This isn't an epidemic created by the people themselves. It's created by society as a whole... symptoms of careless technological advancements that ignore proper regulations to predict and control adverse effects.

I hate people who whine about "culture" in these cases. It's like the deaf "culture", and the people who decide not to use medical innovations to make their children not deaf, because their "culture" gets destroyed.

Get it, people, you aren't at peak optimum. It's not as easy for you to live as it is for other, healthier people. You shouldn't be persecuted, but you shouldn't work to **** over your children because of your own issues.

Obese people don't need to be obese. They don't live some better life because of their obesity.

They're unhealthy. It's a fact, not opinion. They don't live as long, they can't function as well. And in most cases it seems that a few lifestyle changes would drop their weight down to at least a healthy level, but they can't be arsed to follow it. It's not hard to keep your weight at a healthy, if not optimum level, and it's not unreasonably expensive to either. It's just people refusing to give up their pleasures. Like usual. I don't mean people who're just slightly overweight.

It's a societal and educational problem too, unfortunately, one that should be easily solveable... ****ing corporations.

I'm not counting people who have a legitimate medical reason for their obesity of course. Like deaf people, they are handicapped and should be aided where possible.

Being fat or overweight is one thing, morbidly obese is another. I don't give a shit if someone's fat. I'm, well, pudgy with the perfect genetic make-up to become a fat-arse by the time I'm 30. So what? If it at some point starts to seriously effect my health I'll have to do something about it. But again, there's a difference between being fat and having to be airlifted out of bed.

Be fat, be happy. Or not, that's cool too.

Indeed, but milk-white, pale skin is still attractive today.

to whom? ..unless they're a red head or extremely blond ..white skin is kinda unattractive ..not healthy looking imho

Not so much fat people, except as a fetish.

I'm by no means fat/chubby and never have been ..i'm no chubby chaser but some women can still be attractive and overweight ..not morbidly so but technically anyone 20 pounds over their avverage is considered overweight ..sometimes beauty is skin deep ..there are plenty of women who are the "ideal" body type but their personality kills any looks they may have ..sometimes we have to look beyond what our eyes see

The "ideal body type" propagated by those skinny models is ridiculous. A healthy weight means that you have to have some pinchable fat somewhere.

"Drain"? I imagine they still, on average contribute more in tax than they take out.

I wonder. Smokers are the only general group that has as many health problems as the obese, and they have their habit taxed up the ass for it. Since when is there extra tax on junk food or chocolate? :P

to whom? ..unless they're a red head or extremely blond ..white skin is kinda unattractive ..not healthy looking imho
You hit the nail. Pale-skinned red heads or blondes, extremely light blonde color. Very nice combination.

But I also see a lot of runway models with that sort of pale skin, no matter what their hair color. Not so many tanned models, you know. Ethnic models yes, but tan? Not really. So it seems to me that most people would find that attractive, otherwise they wouldn't use those models.

I'm by no means fat/chubby and never have been ..i'm no chubby chaser but some women can still be attractive and overweight ..not morbidly so but technically anyone 20 pounds over their avverage is considered overweight ..sometimes beauty is skin deep ..there are plenty of women who are the "ideal" body type but their personality kills any looks they may have ..sometimes we have to look beyond what our eyes see
Indeed, some women who are 'technically' overweight can be attractive. It's on a scale though; everyone interprets that scale differently. What one person might see as "healthy" or "chubby," yet still find attractive, someone else might see a whale off the port bow.

I don't even think there is an "ideal body type," just personal preference. I was having a very similar discussion with my mates recently about something similar to that, preferences and attraction.

Theres nothing wrong with being fat. I could care less about someone elses lifestyle choice. The problem arises when someone else being fat affects me economically and/or socially. Also, while yes while genetics do control your metabolism and how your body stores fat that can easily be overcome by running everday and other activies. While yes some people can eat and eat and never gain weight, genetics are no reason to blame someone being fat/skinny. For the most part it is a choice if you want to get up and run or you want to sit down and eat.

The ideal body type does come down to personal preference. On girls I like seeing that athletic look. I hate the looks of girls who smoke/starve or are fat. A girl who is short and just a little chubby... idk I like that too.

I have to concur with Dynasty here. While it's definately not good to tease others who are fat, people like this "Winklestein" tard from Yahoo.com are promoting it.:P No matter how this guy tries to slice it, it's better to try and maintain a healthy diet and exercise once in a while. Also, since when was our medical the "best" in the world,
"When you have a first-rate medical system that can cure the diseases that obesity promotes, you no longer need to worry so much about being obese," he told AFP.
according to what this guy says? True, the U.S. has the "best" compared to many other underdeveloped nations, but certainly not what I'd call "first-rate". They'd throw you out the front door here with three gunshot wounds to the chest (assuming the poor victim is still alive of course) if you don't have insurance.:P Admittedly though, I'm not exactly what you would call a "Slim Jim" either. However, I still only have about 14% body fat and one must have at least 20% to be considered clinically obese.:p

So let me get this straight....

Theres a guy out there named Finkelstein?

Awesome.

to whom? ..unless they're a red head or extremely blond ..white skin is kinda unattractive ..not healthy looking imho

Not healthy haha by what magical standards is pale skin not healthy? Tanned skin is far more unhealthy than pale skin because typically to get a tan you need to expose yourself to sunlight for ages on end. Then you get to experience the wonders of skin cancer, yay. You only really need about 15 mins of sunlight exposure per day to stay healthy.

These days we have fake tans but hey that's even worse. Slapping random chemicals all over. Sounds like fun.

Except in rare cases being fat is due more to being lazy and having a severe lack of self-control than any kind of genetic disability. Sure, some people have slower metabolisms than others, but the vast majority of us don't have a severe genetic disposition to being fat. It's called laziness, or just not giving a shit.

Now I don't really care. People can do whatever the hell they want with their lives, I don't care. Just don't whine to me about it being a ****ing disease and how I should feel sorry for you because you're a ****ing fatass with no self control. This is your fault. You're not a victim, you're an American - get over yourself.

And that bullshit about poor people being forced into obesity because they can't afford better food is just dumb. I'm a college student trying to spend around $40 a month on food and I manage to eat halfway healthy and fit through my door. I don't have a ridiculously high metabolism either. If I ate at McDonald's on a regular basis I'd probably be a little chunky too.

Fake tan is ****ing rank.

Imo, people can be whatever the **** they want (because it's their own right to their own personal identity); but you won't catch me boning a fat chick or being a fat-ass too.

Why don't you do a little research before you make such statements. If you actually put an intelligent thought out in the internet to gather information about what I said, you will see that I am right.

McDonalds... stop ****ing talking about McDonalds okay? That doesn't even factor into what I'm talking about. I'm talking about families buying food products that for all intents and purposes seem fine and healthy. But when you look at them through a more technical lens and see that the makeup of these foods as we progress technologically, is full of things that do the body way more harm than good.

We have products like high fructose corn syrup finding their way into almost every product imaginable, liquid and solid. This is a HUGE contributing factor of obesity in America, the high fructose corn syrup. It isn't just about the amount people are eating, or the type of food people are eating(such as a comparison of McDonalds vs storebought). It's about the makeup of food as we progress that becomes the true subject and culprit of obesity.

The obesity epidemic is a very real and serious issue plaguing the United States, and increasingly the world. However, if you DO YOUR ****ING RESEARCH you can see that it's a very recent trend, and it's evidenced of the fact in the last 60+ years we have had amazing technological advancements in all areas of life. But many of those concerning the food industry are in fact not ideal. High fructose corn syrup. Hormones injected into livestock. Artificial ingredients used in foods to increase flavor. Processing techniques that strip foods of ideal nutritional content for the sake of appearance and shelf life.

If you look 70 years ago and beyond, we don't have the epidemic we have today with obesity. When people were fat in those days, it was often a case of gluttony or severe medical problems. But today, your average person can easily succumb to the many chemicals and other ingredients that are wholly unnatural in much of the everyday food we consume, without touching fast food at all. And while eating a moderate amount of calories.

So... that all being said... don't be a ****ing retard and throw out one of those sweeping blanket statements that "Fat people are fat because they are lazy and stupid.". Instead... DO SOME RESEARCH and you will see that I am for the most part, 100% correct.

Until then, you just sound like an idiot. An uninformed, ranting idiot.

Even if private industry and government take steps to protect society against the costs of obesity,

What?. The private industry will NEVER take any steps to "protect society." The current government? Not a big chance methinks.

many Americans "will likely continue to choose a diet and exercise regimen that leads to excess weight," because losing weight requires too many lifestyle sacrifices, his book warns.

Okay, so is this about having a choice of being fat or not? For those who do have a choice in controlling their weight - what lifestyle sacrifices? Go for a jog, 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week? Cut back on the grease, eat more protein? Eat 5 times a day, replacing fats and sweets with healthier foods? Oh I see, too many lifestyle sacrifices. They might make you feel worse, too.

Globally, only Saudi Arabia fares worse than the United States in terms of the percentage of adults with a severe weight problem -- 35 percent of people in the oil-rich desert kingdom are classified as obese, the book says, citing data from the World Health Organization and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

What about the non-oil-rich desert parts of the world. Do I smell bullshit yes I think I do.

What that graph says to me is we need to send more food from the US to Korea. Either that or stop growing spicy cabbage.

o whom? ..unless they're a red head or extremely blond ..white skin is kinda unattractive ..not healthy looking imho

Way to insult every whitey not addicted to the tanning salon.

And FYI, your own personal opinion and tastes are not universal fact, don't make the mistake of assuming because you don't like white skin that others don't, thats so extremely bad debating form that its almost offensive.

Positions need facts, not feelings.

I am well aware of the quality of our food. I know about the preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, hormones being injected into our meat, etc. Not all of these are fattening mind you, but by and large they are all very unhealthy.

But that's besides the point. People can choose better food, eat better places, and just take better care of themselves. It isn't a matter of economics but rather motivation. Like I said, I manage to keep a fairly low food budget and still eat somewhat healthily. If I didn't, if I went to the grocery store and loaded up on Easy Mac and whatever other random shit people eat then I would be fat too. I would be a "victim" of the "disease" if I chose to stop giving a shit.

Obesity doesn't just sneak up on you. It's not ****ing cancer. It's a choice, a choice to take the easy route. Once again, I don't give a shit. People can do what they want with their lives and their bodies. But I don't feel sorry for them and it's annoying to see people like that play the victim. They brought it on themselves, and if they don't like it then they should fix it.

I don't think you realise that for someone obese, it's not so easy. A five-minute jog can be enough to completely exhaust someone like that; even climbing up stairs can be a struggle. Cutting back on fatty foods is definitely easier than exercising, and will give you better results, but those types of food are very addictive. Moreover, the more you eat, the more you feel you need to eat, because your stomach expands and you don't feel full as quickly. I don't know if you've ever lost a significant amount of weight (over 30 pounds, let's say), but it's not something that anybody can do quickly and easily.
I disagree. I've lost 50 pounds before because I was fat. I stopped eating McDonalds and I stopped drinking Soda. I wouldn't say I ate other healthy foods. I still snacked on chocolate here and there. I still ate a lot of junky food. But I did loose 10 - 15 over the course of a few months. How did I loose the rest? I walked 3 to 5 miles every single day. I lost the rest in a month and a half. I rarely jogged or even ran. I walked. I'm not asking over weight people to walk that much everday. I'm asking them to walk a little bit and a little bit each more every day. I hear about a lot of fat people who are afraid to go outside or are afraid to go to the gym beacause of how fat they are. Yet everytime I go to the gym for my run and I see a fat guy jogging or walking it makes me think that there is still hope for America.

When I started high school I only dreamed of being at all athletic. I just wanted to be able to run a mile. I'm a senior, and I've gone so much further than that.
