OK, I am officially frustrated, help would be appreciated.

So I am a casual gamer, I do not live on my PC and have been enthralled with the Half Life series until something, somewhere went terribly wrong.

I found Episode 1 very frustrating with the level in the dark that was just incredibly dumb. I hated Doom 3 and found this annoying, glad they fixed it for some of us that are not that good on FPS.

Then finally episode 2 comes out, and not only do we get the annoying car back, but Alyx is with us the whole way and the final battle is just way to hard, even on easy.

Have played it about 100 times and still cannot finish the fight. Run out of ammo, too many styders, cannot run while holding the gravity gun which makes no sense at all.

Now, to those that find it easy, I am glad, good for you, some of us are not that fortunate.

I have had all I can of it, and am not even interested in finishing it and doubt I will buy 3 because it seems they built that level with one setting in mind and whoever tests these games are obviously experts.

Whoever they have designing the newest levels of Half Life needs to be fired. The story is progressing, somewhat, but they have gone away from the puzzle solving intriguing game that was HL2 and turned it into a mindless run and gun shooter.

I would appreciate help, but will probably end up more frustrated than I am.

Now this is not intended to be a flame war, and to those that find it easy, I applaud you, but this is meant for the few who share my feelings, or are genuinely interested in helping.

On the final strider battle, just make sure you're utilizing strider busters on the striders, and killing the hunters first. The easiest way to kill the hunters is to pick up logs, let them shoot it with their flechettes, and then fire the log at them.

If you're having difficulty due to slow reflexes or a general lack of ability in the FPS realm, try playing other games that require quick thinking and reaction. Personally, the games that got my "skills" in check were Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner and a long stint of Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Now I have no trouble with Crysis. (cannot wait for that one) and COD4.

What I am saying is that HL2 did not require that much skill in the easy part. I played the other settings and very difficult, but stayed at easy and the game was at least beatable.

Now they are gearing these games for the super experts or the expert gamers, which, I am not.

I am hoping they dumb the easy level down more for us. One can hope.

I thought Ep 2 was easier than the others, but there you go...

I found it was best to just get in the car and turbo over the Hunters to kill 'em, then pull a Strider buster off the back of the car.

Yeah did that. I guess I will try again when I am a calmer. How disturbing is that?

My whole point is that they have medium, and hard settings for the experts. They could of made the easy level....well.....EASY. Then if we wanted to advance up to the next levels, so be it. I do not get that at all.

Oh well, I guess this will effect my decision on episode 3 unless they find a way to make the levels appropriate for the setting.

Don't worry mate, I found that battle ****ing difficult, too. I turned god mode on.

I too used god mode. I suck. :(

And what the hell is with insulting ep2 man, and you say you are not gonna get 3, whats your justification, it's too hard? If it's that, and that is the only reason I see in your post, then you can gtfo.

Insulting ep2? I stated this was not meant to start a flame war.

gtfo? Goodness, how childish. What is with some of you that feel the need to insult posters who do not share your opinion?

Grow up please. I figured it was going to easy and that somewhere someone was going to feel like a tough guy and start throwing out insults for no reason...

Open the console (Options -> Keyboard -> Advanced -> enable developer console) with ~

sv_cheats 1

god

Thank you very much. Maybe this will help. LOL. I am probably going to have to put the RPG code on it as well, shame I have to cheat to finish a game on EASY. That just sucks!

Thanks for your help man and glad I am not alone.

Of course all of my younger soldiers get a kick out of me having to cheat but hey, what can you do?

insults? You say you are not going to get ep3 because you find it too hard and that you are not going to finish ep2. How could I possibly keep quiet?

Anyway, you must have typed that since you must have really been pissed off at not being able to complete the battle, so now that you have god mod..

Beat it second try on Hard. What's so hard about it?

I didn't have too much trouble on it. I had to reload once because towards the very end, two striders "rush" the silo. One comes in from the water tower, crouched down and moving very fast. You have to just really balance your use of the car and do your best to take the Hunter escorts out first. Blue_Screen's recommendation of firing logs with their own flechettes back at them was a good one, but this may be a challenge or frustrating to you if you're not sure of your reflexes. I simply took them out with the car and then parked under the strider, hopped out and Mag'd it. Get back in the car and follow your radar to the closest resupply shed. Stock up, get another Mag, load it on the car, head to the sawmill and wait for the next radar blip. The sawmill is pretty much equidistant from all three of the areas where the Hunters and Striders come in (crane to the left, water tower to the right), so you can reach them all quickly. The radar and resupply sheds are absolutely critical assets, so do your best to utilize them and get a lay of the land and it's a piece of Aperture Science cake. The hardest part of it all, in my opinion, is taking out the Hunters with the car ... but done right, it's the quickest way.

Just run the hunters over, shoot the magnussons at striders - hard, my ass.

I just beat the final battle on hard without dying. And they didn't even get to set the alarm off. Hardcore.

I usually play on Medium, breezed through the main game, but the strider battle took me a few tries. Feckin hunters piss me off.

Wow I was actually annoyed that it was too easy and wanted soldiers and gunships too in that final battle..like in the video :bounce:
But I guess that yeah, you should turn god mode if it's too hard.

Actually HL2 was harder for me on hard mode than either EP1 or EP2.

I cheated and used god mode.
What? I wanted to finish the feckin game so I could come in the Ep2 forums.
BTW Lowlife in episode 1 was freaking awesome. It made me a man!

Yes, a true warrior must learn to discard his personal life and switch off 'Sv_cheats 1'...

I agree that it was frustrating, but I stuck with it and eventually beat it on Medium. It probably took me at least 2 hours (not in one sitting). It did feel good afterwards, though, not lowering difficulty and not cheating.

Playing through in commentary mode, however, I cheated like heck. Not only did I enable god mode, I also bound a key to disable the AI. That was nice because I could pause battles and scenes when trying to listen to the commentary. Also fun just to pause hunters and such in the middle of action and take the time to appreciate the models and poses.

What I had in was
Code:
sv_cheats 1
god
bind m ai_disable
then I just pressed 'm' whenever I wanted to pause battle or a scene. You can still move around and even kill enemies while the ai is disabled.

Haha you people used god mode... it took me a few tries on normal, wasn't that difficult to get a hang of...

Whether or not the final battle was hard is determined entirely by your skill level, and possibly limited by your system's capabilities. So saying "no it's not hard, it's easy" is bogus. It can be both easy for some and hard for others. It is neither universally hard nor easy. And I'm sure Valve tries to accomodate what testing shows to be the most common level of skill. Thus, the super-skilled may find it easy, but the less skilled may find it hard. It's not really that complicated.

@rangerixxi -

I'm probably in your league - I usually play on medium but had to switch to easy for the final battle (after dying a great many times on medium). What worked for me was to drive around going after the striders and hunters in the early going. Run over the hunters and then magnusson the striders. With only one strider at a time, you can eventually run over all the hunters before the strider gets near the silo (though you may often miss them). When it gets hotter after the second wave, I found that a suggestion someone else mentioned here worked well: just camp out on that big rock near the last stretch to the silo, lay in a good supply of magnusson's behind the rock ahead of time, make sure you're ammoed up, and get as healthy as you can. Then 'snipe' the hunters as they approach with the crossbow, revolver, pulse rifle, and alt fire pulse rifle. Then do the striders with your MDs. Never bother to try to kill a strider before all the hunters are dead, because they'll always disrupt the MDs.

Good luck. :)

The last battle was quite easy in comparison to what i was expecting. There was tons of ammo, health and suit charge in all the houses, which you should have gone into to restock the magnusson on your car.

Before shooting the magnusson onto the Strider i always made sure that i'd killed all the hunters in the immediate vicinity as they can destroy magnussons very easily. Easiest way to kill hunters, as stated before, is to either run them over or use physics objects to catch flechettes and kill them with those.

The only moderately hard bit is at the end where there are 3 striders. Just take do the same thing as you've been doing before. Kill hunters, use magnusson, shoot magnusson, restock, repeat, win.

How can you use god mode? If you do, it means you havn't acomplished the game, cheats did it for you.

Yeah, that's my opinion of this game's difficulty.

The battle is easy if you know what to do. Valve tried to make it painfully obvious that Hunter's are vulnerable to to g-gunned projectiles and that striders ignore you until you you attach the bomb to them. And of course the giant hint about the AR2 secondary fire ;)

Maybe quicksave after you blow up a strider?

It's certainly not Valve's fault though. They specifically took out alot of other enemies after play testers complained about difficulty.

The first time in the battle i flunked it pretty bad.

Then i realised i could drive over the hunters.

And i also realised i could basically stand right underneath a strider and fire my magnusson. And then i found the pistol was the most effective way to shoot the magnussons.

So i only had to use pistol/ggun/car to finish it.

What did other people use besides the pistol? It's like the easiest thing you could possibly use.

Damn Hunters shooting the Magnusson off the Striders with their fletchettes.

all HL2 games are too easy omho...so I dunno what to tell you, maybe you need a bettter mouse.

There was a thread like this on SUF. I can't believe there are people who find these games difficult. On the other hand, it makes me feel leet. :p

I am probably the epitome of a noob gamer. I've only completed HL2, HL2 ep One & SMOD (w/ HL2 maps only) which was basically HL2 with enhancements. I refused to use any kind of cheats or anything that would give me the upper hand. What fun is that?

I never seem to have enough time to game as much as I'd like. I'm currently playing HL2 ep Two on Normal setting. I've been doing great until tonight. I'm stuck in "Under the Radar" chapter. But, I'm just going to keep trying till I figure how to get through the part I'm stuck on. After reading all this I'm not feeling like such a noob. Thanks y'all!

Damn! That text is hella huge. How the hell did that happen? LoL

What with HL2's swelling fan base, it's getting pretty common to see people come on here with something they have to get off their chest about something they find annoying in the game. Often it's along the lines of 'good game, but why didn't they change this ONE thing which is completely ****ing PANTS, and I can't believe any sane person would design a game like that EVER! And I'm SO convinced of this fact that I can't concieve of there being any kind of argument against my criticism!'

The thing is, no matter what aspect of the game it is about, 30 seconds of searching will reveal at least one person saying the complete opposite, and a much larger group of people saying '...buh? it never bothered me...' What that all says to me is that Valve get the balance near enough perfect.

How can you use god mode? If you do, it means you havn't acomplished the game, cheats did it for you.

I mostly agree with you, and as I said, I didn't cheat. I've beaten all the HL games without cheating, and for the most part they aren't very hard. However, not everybody wants to get the same thing out of a game. Some want a lighter experience, some want it more hardcore, some hate going half an hour without progressing, some just want the story. Depending on who you are and why you play, cheating may not be so bad.

What did other people use besides the pistol? It's like the easiest thing you could possibly use.

Well the shotgun you barely have to aim at the strider at all, but ammo could be a problem.

I was using the shotgun way too much to blast Hunters. :/

I hate Hunters. They're so hard to run over. Bastards.
