NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's Oldboy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.

Why in the name of all that is good and wonderful would they think that this is an idea worth seeing to fruition??? Will Smith as Oh Dae Su?? PLEASE SAY IT AIN'T SO!!! :(

From Wikipedia:

Oldboy (Hangul: 올드보이, the phonetic transliteration of "old boy") is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Park Chan-wook. It is based on a Japanese manga of the same name written by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. Oldboy is the second installment of The Vengeance Trilogy, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and followed by Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

The movie follows the story of Dae-Su who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor's motives. When he is finally released, Dae Su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and strangeness. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef.

One of the best movies, let alone Asian movies, I have ever seen. Amazingly shot, written, directed, acted, etc.

Sounds interesting, might check it out some time.

My friend bought me oldboy on DVD last year, and I've judged the film by it's cover and never watched it. Perhaps I should, the outline to the plot above really doesn't grab me though, am I missing something?

Brutal violence.

Old Boy kicked ass. But spielberg owns, it will be better then the original.

Not with the ****ing maker of Indy 4 god damn it.

Oh for ****'s sake, just move Hollywood to Korea already.

He's never made a film that failed.

Oh Rehehehealy?

Wild

Wild

West, Jim West, desperado, rough rider,
No you don't want nada, none of this, six gun in this, brotha runnin this...

I seen this on filmfour ages ago. I was surprised how good it was.

Outrageous. Why!? Why remake something that is so ****ing good.
It'll end up like the people trying to remake chocolate. Now who eats the ****ing strawberry cream!?

Um, Hancock?? That movie was utter crapola.

I Am Legend was not even that good sadly.

But yes, Wild Wild West takes the cake I fear. Unbelievable stinker.

Both of those films were pretty big successes actually.

Succes or not, Wild wild west was still ass on a sandwich.

In a bad way.

... I said he'd never made a flop. He hasn't.

will smith is entertaining viewing. hes done some good films and some not so good films like every other hollywood actor out there. hes got character to be fair unlike some actors

That movie Wild Wild West makes me taste burger king. I think they had some toys for that movie in their happy meals or something.

Remakes and tired cliches are all are you ever see come out of Hollywood anymore. Now they're even remaking movies that were only released a few years ago. Oldboy is a masterpiece from start to finish, and I wish even Spielberg would realize that and leave it be. It deserves to be seen in it's current form, not as some dumbed down, pop-referencing American rehash.

I seriously hope this isn't remotely true. I'd also say this film is way way too dark for direct translation, without becoming deeply compromised as a result. It's a great movie and I do own it, but it's not exactly something I'd watch repeatedly because of the subject matter.

Do not read if you haven't seen it:
I agree, incest is not general content in hollywood.
Oldboy was only made 5 years ago and is a flawless piece of cinema, what the hell is the point of a remake other than for america to wave their dick at asia?
The ring. The Grudge. Now this sacrilege. Will Smith?? ffs.

Maybe americans just can't read subtitles.

I Am Legend was pretty good. Wild Wild West was an entertaining lolfest and if you judge it otherwise you're the one failing. Hancock was alright.

You will be at the cinema on your own when this one premiers then.

Looks like it's just you then, don't eat all the popcorn

I didn't say it was even going to watch it, but you're naive if you really think nobody will go see a Smith/Speilberg film just because you don't like it being a remake.

Clearly not as naive as you for taking what I said literally.

I havent seen old boy ..yes I know, however I can say that spielberg lost any indie cinematic spirit he may have had long ago ..hollywood doesnt do all that well with remakes

anyone remember the dreadful Nick Cage flick City of Angels? it also starred meg ryan ..boring as all hell. it was a remake of the brilliant Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire:

In 1998 an American remake called City of Angels was made. The setting was Los Angeles and starred Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. Aside from the basic premise of angels watching humans, with the opening scene also taking place in a landmark library, and a love story, the 1998 film bears little relation to the original.

or what about the unbelievably stupid Bridget fonda movie Point of No Return, it was a remake of the vastly superior La Femme Nikita, in fact hollywood has a long track record of remaking foreign films with mostly horrible results

and will smith? ok he can act but he's limited in scope

Both of those films were pretty big successes actually.
Sure, just like the Legend of Bagger Vance...:O

/sarcasm

And not Wild Wild West either actually:

Wikipedia said:
The film was almost universally panned by critics. Robert Conrad, who starred in the original 60s series, repeatedly panned the movie and attended the 20th annual Razzies in 2000 to accept three of the five worst-movie awards for the picture.

At the end of its US theatrical run, Wild Wild West made $113 million, well below its $170 million production budget.

Oldboy is one of the great movies of our time, but because the content matter is so dark and disturbing and frankly un-american, it has to be remade so good ol' chuck can enjoy what he thinks is a great film too. Sadly, remaking it in an 'american' way will kill exactly what makes this a great film in the first place, just like every other hollywood remake of a foreign film.

I used to love Spielberg films, but the same old sugar coated, sentimental, feel good hollywood pap got boring and hasn't done anything for me since the 90's.

Cap'n, I suggest watching Oldboy with loud surround sound and in it's original Korean with English subtitles. Be prepared to watch it at least twice.

I also recommend Ju-On, the original Japanese film that 'The Grudge' was based on. Watch that in a dark room.

and I remember city of angels, it verily did suck.

I think I've seen a scene from Oldboy ..it was on tv and I saw about 5 minutes worth and thought it was really cool ...he's walking through what looks like a subway station while people attack him which he fights off with little to no effort even though some of the wounds the attackers inflict seem like mortal wounds ...but then I had to leave and missed the rest

not big on horror films ..and I prefer my foreign films to be more ...filled with sex ..which pretty much means every film ever made in italy, france or spain

Shame you missed the scene with the minigun and the russian puppy.

Hey, I think I saw that film...

moustache: hi, i'm here to clean the pool
boobs: can you help me unzip my hotpants? it's so warm in here
moustache: hey baby you want to feel my muscles?

That's the script, the rest is all clever choreography
