Is this proof we count?
Is this proof I count?

From recent Greg Coomer interview, october 21st 2004:

Greg also clued me in to one of the features of HL2 which hasn't been shown off yet. This is the Bird AI found in the game. Adrian Finol spent a considerable amount of time creating realistic birds for the Half-Life 2 engine. They fly and react to their environment just as a bird in the real world would. I recall from my playtest at VALVe birds flying off of a cliff in one area of the game. I didn't realize they were there until I made noise and they flew away. It was quite amazing to say the least.

From the notorious info from valve thread:

From MOD (posted june 16th 2003, but received a month or so earlier)

Here goes the small man's pickering:
The E3 demos are amazing.
Just one thing that bothered me, the birds. There is a gun battle going on, birds don't want to be there.
If the birds can fly around, and fly the hell away when gunshots sound, that would be amazing (and not too easy to code). {meant hard, `doh}

GJ on HL2, it truly is looking amazing.

Answer:

We had the birds hanging around in the demo cause we theought they were cool. In the game they are more skittery.

I just noticed gabe has a typo there :D

Anyway, makes me wonder :|

Your point made alot of sense...so they did it....or they had it disabled while the demo was playing...who knows....

come around a corner...silence....you hear a far off "thump!"....
the birds fly away...
"thump!"...
the last straggling bird flies off...
"thump!"....
"STRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEEEEEEEEEEEER!"

Perhaps you made them change it, perhaps not. Cool nonetheless...

Gabe said himself (In your old email) that in the game the birds are more skittery...

What exactly have you changed?
They just disabled the AI or something because they thought it looked cool...

??

-And this didn't need a new thread, we were already discussing the topic of Bird AI in HL2 in another thread.

Thankyou.

wooooo go go go... *mes gonna email gabe for last minute changes.. and cause another delay* :naughty:

Heh, too bad the game is already out the door, and being created as we speak.

Valve couldn't change it if they wanted to.

Skittish birds would likely fly away. What happens when you actually shoot them?

I'm praying for a puff of bloody feathers.

Heh...Valve makes an announcement:

"Hey guys. We're delaying it until next year because, well, umm... the birds aren't real enough. We've gotta get working on them. Sorry for the inconvenience."

yep... it's gonna happen. now we're all SCREWED

tbh i mailed gabe to ask if im just being megalomaniac or wha...

waiting for answer, but I doubt it'll come.

We need a realtime bird simulation here... not some crackpot cutting cornor birds

I want to see V-flight bird patterns, squawking, and pooping on everything. GOD DAMN'T! WE DESERVE THIS!

Yeah, we deserve to see male pigeons try to rut with the sexy fraulein pigeons. Verisimiltude, people.

LOL, and if they poop on your head you finally have a reason to take them down with your rocketlauncher :p.

Or a bird-multiplayer-mode would be cool too. Your all in a map and there are birds flying in the sky, for each killed bird you get a point. Or maybe you should get extra points if you kill a rare bird. And the one with the most points wins of course. But wouldn't so many birds n the sky too much lag?

GOod joB Now wE aLl can LOve tHe bIrDs In hLTwO.

hehe cool stuff anyway.
