I upgraded the RAM in my Laptop yesterday, it now has 1GB. I fired up HL2, and had a look at the settings, the *s had changed positions, now it said my system could handle high models and textures, so i set them.

I then started a new game, and was stunned by how much better the detail looked, I must have spent about half an hour to an hour just walking around and looking at stuff!

People using 512MB, get more Ram! You'll be shocked at the difference!

yeah i got another 512 for xmas

heh im buying 512 more this month or the next - :D here i come, although i already play on highest details lol.

I just got an extra 512 megs too!
Now my sytem specs are:
Athlon Xp 2500
Radeon 9600xt 256 mb
and of course,
1 Gb of corsiar ddr 400 RAM
Once I install it, do ya think I'll be able to run HL2 with high textures?

Mines 400MHz laptop memory, speed is awesome!

Gaming heaven! I just ran UT2K4 as another test, it went so fast I nearly crapped my pants!

i have rdram and its maxed out at 4 x 128 MB PC800.. And its expensive like a mother. Do I need to get a new mobo that supports a different kind of ram or what?

512mb sucks for fps games when will people realize that ?

when you`ll start paying for the extra 512 stick

Damn, I'd love to get some more RAM. But the only RAM my motherboard supports is PC800 RDRam, and that's expensive as hell. Maybe I'll just wait until next year when I get a new rig for college

someone can asnwer me a questiong?

is thrue that the loading times take 15 minutes whit 256mb of RAM?

Yep! :sniper:

I ran HL2 fine on high models and textures with 512MB ram. In fact the only setting (excluding AA/AF) I had on anything but the maximum was the reflections IIRC. No problems like huge loading times either.

Of course I wouldn't mind 1 gig of ram, but it's expensive these days.

My friend just bought 512MB DDR PC3200 for $50 at Fry's. :smoking:

No way in hell. Maybe if you have a 64mb GFX card, celeron 1.2Ghz :p and all textures on high, etc. etc.

You should load in ~1-3 minutes on the settings Valve will set automagically.

When HL2 stops running nicely with everything on high?

I know... I know... I paid $100 to upgrade from 512 to 768. And that was the best price I could find.

I have a Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 512MB DDR333 PC2700.

I wonder if I would see any improvement if I buy other one. Probably not right?

u think u've got it bad...i have even more expensive pc1066 rdram, i only wish i buty 512mb for less that $350. Because for 350 i could get a gig of ddr2. :(

why wouldn't you..........

maybe because the cpu and the video card are the main players here?

Well my set up is a bit different. I'm running HL2 off a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop.

ATi Mobility Radeon 9700
Pentium IV 3.2GHz
512MB Ram (now 1024MB!!)

HL2 ran sweet with medium models and textures, but on high it ran like a lame dog. Now I've upped to 1GB of Ram, it runs sweet on high models and textures.

The game I was having serious trouble with was Vampire Bloodlines. I had all the settings on low, and the game stuttered like a demon. With the extra ram, and a redifined pagefile, I get no stuttering at all.

If you have a gig of ram, best practice would be to maually set your Pagefile (perferably on another hard drive if you can!) set the initial/minimum size to a gig, and set the max to 2 gig, increasing if you need to.

Hehe, oh the irony for me in this thread!

I have a 512 MB RAM on my video card and 2GB of normal RAM (I think it's fast-ish RAM too, but not sure), and I have to put the textures to Medium as it's the only way I've found to completely eliminate stuttering.

I still think it looks great, though, and I can only really tell any difference when I go and stare at a wall or something close up, which I don't do very often!

@magictorch, you must have a bottleneck in yr system somewhere for that to happen, you'd think with that hardware, it'd run smooth as.

My GPU mem is only 128MB

I'd recommend looking at some hardware forums and asking some of the guys there someone's bound to know what you can do to help.

Can someone please post a link to a decent hardware forum, I'm having trouble remembering names of ones I've found answers at... that and I'm off to bed now, early start.

well sure in my PC the settings will be lowest possible

the rest of my PC is:
p4 1.8Ghz
videocard S3 raphics prosavage DDR 32mb

I had a gig of DDR, then I had to go down to 512 *sob*

my game's recommended settings are all high textures and models, but it lags like hell for me when its set like that.

1024MB (512x2) @ 2700

The game runs like a beauty.

BTW does anyone have 2048MB of ram? I hear the new Alienware computers can have 2048MB.

Not for me, I just set all the settings to lowest, and the resolution. Load up a game, takes about 20 seconds. Then put my settings to medium, takes about another 20 seconds to adjust. So with 256mb of ram, it takes 40 seconds to load.
